CB Armani Reeves (National Champion)

freep - Recruiting: Michigan looking to land 4-star CB Armani Reeves

1/25

An area that Michigan?s coaching staff has focused on during the 2012 recruiting cycle is the defensive secondary.

The Wolverines have picked up three safety commitments - Jarrod Wilson, Allen Gant, and Jeremy Clark - and one cornerback in Detroit Cass Tech product Terry Richardson.

One more cornerback would fill out the group nicely, and West Roxbury (Mass.) Catholic Memorial four-star Armani Reeves is the man that Michigan?s coaches are pursuing.

Reeves was committed to Penn State throughout the fall, but the turmoil in Happy Valley led him to re-open his recruitment. The 5-10, 185-pound corner has excellent skills in man-to-man coverage, and despite his small stature, he brings plenty of power when he tackles ball carriers.

Reeves is ranked the No. 17 cornerback and No. 219 overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com, and the second-best player in Massachusetts, behind friend and teammate Camren Williams, a linebacker who has committed to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are Michigan?s primary competition to land Reeves, but the cornerback insists that Williams? presence in Columbus will not sway him.

?We?ll make the best decision that?s best for us individually,? he said. ?Whether that?s us staying at Penn State, or going to Ohio State, or me just going to Michigan just doing my own thing. Any choice would be great because they?re all great schools, and they?ll fit us perfectly in different ways.?

Reeves visited Michigan on Jan. 14 and Ohio State Jan. 19, and will make his final selection between those two schools after eliminating the Nittany Lions from contention. His relationship with Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, cultivated during the trip to Ann Arbor, will be a huge boost to the Wolverines? chances to reel him in.

?Coach Mattison didn?t really leave my side the whole visit,? Reeves said. ?We got to sit down and watch some of the Ravens game. He was talking about some of the players, Ray Lewis and all of those guys. The fact that he was sitting right beside me almost every little thing I was doing, I could tell he really wants me. He really wants me to be a part of the program.?

Michigan head coach Brady Hoke was in Reeves? home on Saturday, and head Buckeye Urban Meyer on Monday. Mattison made the final impression on Reeves with an in-home visit on Tuesday night. Reeves plans to make his final choice between the Buckeyes and Wolverines by Saturday.

Armani Reeves in home with coach Mattison from #Michigan went well according to source, source feels its 52-48 #Michigan over #OhioState

I still think Cam Williams and Armani Reeves want to play together and that could be a huge factor here in favor of #OhioState

Mattison taking credit for the Ravens's defense has always amused me. That's like me taking credit for BP just because I've been a part of it...

I know they need CB's badly up north, but there's definitely a lot of things working in our favor as well... Will be interesting to watch this one finish up.

I get the "NFL factor", but I'd think his UF defense would be something he'd want to play up more than Baltimore. Not to mention how he turned around scUM's disaster of a defense this season. That was practically a ground up rebuild, and they were night and day from the previous couple of years of Rodriguez's 3-3-5 lunacy.

I'm sure its on a bullet pointed list somewhere.

Maybe I'm missing something but it sure seems like OSU needs corners pretty badly as well. By my count there are only 3 returning corners, one of whom will be a senior (Howard, Roby & D. Grant), and one incoming freshman (Murray). I'm sure this has been pointed out to Reeves.

Not really... we already have alot of young guys in the program at CB and by all accounts they are progressing really really well. Armani would be a great pickup because he is an outstanding talent, but I don't think it's a do or die situation.
