Amos battled back to lineup

Former Middie worked way back from injury to play for OSU in BCS championship.

NEW ORLEANS ? Andre Amos went up for a pass in a practice last spring, and on landing, he felt the pain so feared by athletes. It was a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which was a roadblock for the sophomore from Middletown.
"It was a major setback," Amos said. "When it first happened, I didn't find out right away, they kind of waited a couple days, and really all I could look to was my family and my coaches. They kept my spirits up."
In recovering from the injury, Amos has become the backup to cornerback Malcolm Jenkins in the Ohio State secondary and enters the game as an extra defensive back in the Buckeyes' plans for the BCS championship game against LSU on Monday.

Anyone else think Amos will see extensive action against USC? He looks like he'd be able to handle USC's big receivers.

Who made a mark? Andre Amos

Sunday, April 20, 2008 6:39 AM

Andre Amos

? Basics: Junior cornerback
? Quick history: Considered a stellar cover corner coming out of high school, he underwent major knee surgery in the spring a year ago after playing in 12 games primarily on special teams in 2006. He returned to play on three special-teams units the last half of the 2007 season.
? Spring game display: He led the Gray with eight tackles, including five solo. In man coverage, he made a strong hit on Ray Small to keep him to a 4-yard gain on third-and-6 in the second quarter.
? What it means: With starting cornerback Donald Washington being disciplined late in the spring, Chimdi Chekwa moved into that No. 1 role and Amos stepped up to the No. 1 nickel back in certain situations.
? Quotable: "Ever since a couple of guys went down, Andre definitely stepped into the role. He played very well through the whole spring and I think he is ready to be thrown into the rotation." -- safety Kurt Coleman

"With the secondary thinner than normal this week (the Buckeyes will also be without reserve cornerback Andre Amos)"

Anyone know why Amos is out this week?

That sucks. For such a great depth at DB, we are surely spread thin.

I read on the BN$ boards that Amos and Coleman are out this week due to minor injuries. Coleman's injury occurred to his ankle, not sure about Amos.

Amos hopes to end up toward the front of that bus. A Middletown native, his career has been star-crossed. After redshirting in 2005, he played in 12 games in 2006, recording an interception in a blowout win over Indiana.

In the spring of 2007, he suffered a major knee injury. He returned to play in eight games that season, mostly on special teams.

Last spring, he tore a pectoral muscle and tried to play through the pain before having surgery last fall, costing him the entire season.

He's healthy now, facing his last year of eligibility, and hopeful he can step up and claim the spot opposite Chekwa.

"I feel like now I have the opportunity to focus truly on being a starter and contributing a lot to the team," Amos said.

"I want to prove a lot to my teammates."

"I haven't been able to showcase all of my talents from the time I've been here due to injuries," he said. "So I'm ready to unleash everything I've got this last year."

Glad to hear Amos is ready to go! I'd love to see him step up and take the other corner spot. Stay healthy Andre!

I agree, I love this kid. He's really cool and he's very passionate about playing here. Every time I've talked with him he's always been bummed about being injured, but now that is in the past, it's his time to step up and show what kind of a player he is. Best of luck to you this year Dre
