CLEVELAND - LeBron James left no doubt there would be a three-peat.
The Cavaliers forward Monday became the first player in NBA history to be selected player of the week three straight times. He also was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month for March.
James punctuated the month in style during wins over Dallas, Miami and Charlotte. He averaged a league-best 42.7 points on 62.5 percent (45-of-72) shooting, 9.7 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
In Saturday’s 106-99 win over the Heat, James finished with 47 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists for his sixth triple-double of the season and 10th of his career. He became the first player since Larry Bird on March 15, 1992, to have at least those totals in a game.
James averaged a league-high 32.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 6.6 assists in 14 games during March. He scored over 30 points nine times and over 35 points seven times.
James’ March scoring average was the highest for a month in team history.
HUGHES UPGRADED
There is a slight chance Larry Hughes may see his first action in three months tonight against Philadelphia.
The Cavs upgraded Hughes’ status from out to doubtful following a workout Monday. He will be re-evaluated after this morning’s shootout.
Hughes has not played since Dec. 31 because of a fractured middle finger on his right hand. The injury required two surgeries.
Luke Jackson also has resumed practice, but remains out for tonight. He has been out since Feb. 4 with a broken left wrist.
DVC BENEFIT
The Cavaliers will be collecting old cell phones to benefit the Domestic Violence Center in Cleveland during the team’s final three regular-season home games.
Alltel Wireless will also collect phones at participating locations throughout the month. Alltell will donate 50 cents to the Domestic Violence Center for each phone collected. All funds raised will be used to renovate the center’s shelter for women and children.
FSN Ohio color analyst and former Cavs player Scott Williams is aiding the effort. Reach Repository sports writer Mike Popovich at (330) 580-8341 or e-mail: [email protected]
