Cavs 08-09 Season - Central Div Champs (official thread)

Cavs look ahead, not back Preseason game just practice, but playoff loss adds extra motivation
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Friday, Oct 10, 2008

INDEPENDENCE: In the grand scheme of things, tonight's Cavaliers-Boston Celtics game means absolutely nothing.
The games don't count until Oct. 28 when, coincidentally, the Cavs open the season against the Celtics.
But given the contentious nature of their semifinal playoff series last spring, which went seven games, it wouldn't be surprising if this game generated more interest.
''They're the champs; they have a bull's-eye on their chest. We want to try to knock them off their pedestal,'' guard Wally Szczerbiak said. ''That's where we want to get. But it was very motivating watching them celebrate and win last year. We got to keep that in the back of our mind, remember how close we were and get the job done this year.''
Motivation? Sure. But the NBA preseason serves a practical purpose, said LeBron James, who will play limited minutes once again against the Celtics.
''We just want to continue to get better. We did that with Toronto. We
did that the last few practices,'' he said. ''You can't carry a playoff series into a preseason game; there's no comparison.''

Cavs-Celtics to stress repetition, not rivalry

by Mary Schmitt Boyer Thursday October 09, 2008, 6:34 PM

medium_zhorizjk.jpg
John Kuntz/The Plain DealerZydrunas Ilgauskas renews a competitive relationship with Boston's Glen Davis (left) and Kevin Garnett in Friday's preseason game.

CAVALIERS VS. CELTICS
Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. at Dunkin Donuts Center, Providence, R.I.
Radio: WTAM AM/1100.
Notable: First pre-season road game for the new-look Cavs, who dropped a 104-84 decision to the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night in The Q. ... First of consecutive games against the Celtics, followed by a Tuesday game in Pittsburgh. ... Celtics lost their pre-season opener to Philadelphia, 98-92, on Wednesday.
-- Mary Schmitt Boyer
To hear the Cavaliers tell it, the Boston Celtics are almost incidental to Friday night's pre-season game in Providence. "Pre-season games have no significance for one team or the other," Zydrunas Ilgauskas said after practice on Thursday.
Even if the last game against the Celtics was Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Boston?
"You can't carry a playoff series into a pre-season game," LeBron James said.
In preparing for their first road game of this exhibition season, the Cavs are concentrating exclusively on themselves.
"I don't even know who's on their team," coach Mike Brown said.

He was exaggerating, of course. But only slightly. His point was that he's much more concerned with how the Cavs are playing than with who the Cavs are playing. As a team that stresses defense, Brown is still concerned that the Toronto Raptors shot 52 percent in Tuesday's 104-84 victory. He also wants his defenders to pick up their opponents sooner, but only to contain them and take time off the shot clock, not to try and steal the ball.
Brown said he would start Wally Szczerbiak at shooting guard as he continues to experiment with his lineups. Sasha Pavlovic started last Tuesday and Tarence Kinsey likely will start next Tuesday, when the Cavs face the Celtics in Pittsburgh.

An unconventional suggestion for the Cavs shooting guard position

Posted by Dan Labbe, cleveland.com October 09, 2008 14:49PM

small_wallyfistpump.jpg
The Plain DealerWe all know Wally Szczerbiak can drop a mean fist pump, but does that mean he should start every night?
Brian Windhorst today broke down the Cavaliers shooting guard situation and the decision they're facing in three weeks. Why is this decision so difficult for the Cavs? Probably because they don't really have a strong option at the position. Sasha Pavlovic showed flashes in 2007 but has shown little in the opportunities he's been given. Wally Szczerbiak started for much of last postseason but didn't exactly light things up. Delonte West is probably the best of the bunch, but at 6'3" can he be counted on to defend even normal-sized shooting guards or small forwards? The last thing the Cavs need is to have LeBron James chasing around the other team's best player for four quarters.
On top of that, for all their faults, they each have strengths that at least make them serviceable. Pavlovic is athletic and just maybe he can find some success with some space to work while defenses focus on James, Mo Williams and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Wally Szczerbiak, if he's right, could be the best shooter of the bunch and could find some open looks. Delonte West gives the Cavs another player to push the basketball and is the strongest defensively of the three.
The other factor, of course, is that the Cavaliers will start Ben Wallace at the four, which means they have one position from which they will get little to no offense, meaning the two guard has to be a player an opposing defense must account for.

Mo won't wait on Cavs
New point guard likes to run the fast break
Friday, October 10, 2008
BY CHRIS BEAVEN
[email protected]

CLEVELAND One preseason game playing alongside Mo Williams already taught the Cavs one lesson:

Be ready to run.

"They know they have to get out and run, because I'm gone," Williams said.

Cavs All-Star LeBron James is quickly learning that.

"He's very fast and quick getting the ball up the court, so it's definitely a different feeling," James said after the team's preseason opener Tuesday night against Toronto.

The Cavs are back in action tonight against the defending champion Celtics for a 7:30 game in Providence, R.I. Boston ended Cleveland's season a year ago in a grueling seven-game series in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Fast-break points were at an absolute premium for the Cavs in that series and for much of the season. And while Head Coach Mike Brown promises the Cavs never will resemble the Kings of a few seasons ago or the Suns of recent seasons, they do want to get up and down the floor quicker this season.

The less they go against set defenses, the less James has to work against double- and triple-teams in halfcourt settings. With the speed of Williams, in addition to the quickness of returning guards Daniel Gibson and Delonte West, the Cavs look far more equipped to push the ball.

On Tuesday, the results were good early and spotty thereafter. Nine fastbreak points in the first 10 minutes were the good. But some shaky decision-making and playmaking later on was the bad.

NBA notebook: James, Cavs lead early, fall to Celtics

Saturday, October 11, 2008 3:26 AM

LeBron James scored 12 points in the first quarter to give Cleveland an early lead, then the Boston reserves took over and led the NBA champions to a 96-94 exhibition victory over the Cavaliers last night in the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.

Coach likes Cavs' offense, but still focuses on defense Training camp is first for many players, so growing pains expected
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Monday, Oct 13, 2008
INDEPENDENCE: The frustration in Coach Mike Brown's voice was noticeable when he spoke about the Cavaliers' lack of defensive intensity after the their loss to the Boston Celtics Friday night.
The Cavaliers came out firing in the first quarter. With much of the first team on the court, the Cavs scored 37 points but they gave up 28, an unacceptable number to Brown.
''We scored a lot of points, but I didn't see a lot of intensity on the defensive end of the floor,'' he said. ''I'm sure they probably feel the same way.''
Preaching defense is nothing new for Brown. His philosophy is built around it. Offense has been a concern because the Cavs often look as if they're waiting for LeBron James to do something. But with the arrival of Mo Williams, Brown doesn't appear to believe scoring will be a problem.
Instead, Brown believes there is more reason for the Cavs to concentrate on defense. The first two preseason games have only reinforced that fact.

No lack of big men, Cavs coach believes Ilgauskas, Wallace, Varejao to dominate playing time
By George M. Thomas
Beacon Journal sports writer

Published on Tuesday, Oct 14, 2008
INDEPENDENCE: When the Cavaliers lost Joe Smith in the Mo Williams trade this summer, conventional thought would have been that they would lack depth when it comes to big men.
That might not be the case.
Two weeks into training camp, coach Mike Brown doesn't necessarily believe there's a problem. With Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Ben Wallace and Anderson Varejao expected to see the lion's share of minutes, time for a fourth big man could be scarce.
''Guys can't get into a rhythm if they're only playing 15 minutes a game,'' Brown said. ''So you probably only have enough minutes for three guys and then a fourth guy may get some minutes.''
That leaves veteran Lorenzen Wright, whom the Cavs signed as a free agent, and rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson basically working for leftovers. Brown said that each of them has shown him something in camp. Hickson brings natural athleticism, Wright has shown he has plenty left in the tank and Jackson has opened Brown's eyes.
''Lorenzen Wright has been a pleasant surprise in camp and then the young kids, but J.J. and Darnell ? I had to point out to the
team how hard D.J's playing,'' Brown said of Jackson. ''He's been here two weeks, three weeks and . . . he's one of the best screeners I've been around.''

Cavs' rookies impress in loss Hickson and Jackson showcase their skills on Pittsburgh floor
By George M. Thomas

Published on Wednesday, Oct 15, 2008
PITTSBURGH: Coach Mike Brown got a little bit of what he was looking for Tuesday night as the Cavaliers took on the Boston Celtics for the second time in the preseason in the Petersen Event Center at the University of Pittsburgh.
The Cavs lost a 90-86 game against the Celtics to fall to 0-3 in the NBA preseason.
That did or didn't matter to Brown as the Cavs put up a strong defensive effort.
After coming up short 30-21 after the first quarter, the Cavs went to work on defense, holding the Celtics to 17 points in the second quarter.
Much like last week's game, this one proved to be a thriller with the game coming down to a final shot with the Cavs behind by two points and in possession of the ball with 11.1 seconds to go.
Point guard Vernon Hamilton provided a little bit of drama by calling a timeout just as the officials were about to call him for a turnover.
The subsequent play, which Brown called for forward Jawad Williams, faltered giving the Celtics the ball and an eventual victory.

Lose-win situation: Cavs show improvement despite third consecutive preseason loss

by Brian Windhorst Tuesday October 14, 2008, 11:04 PM

medium_jjdunkks.jpg
Keith Srakocic/Associated PressCavaliers rookie forward J.J. Hickson (21) dunks in front of Boston Celtics' Patrick O'Bryant and Leon Powe (0) during Tuesday's exhibition game in Pittsburgh.
Insider: Wallace's back a problem?

PITTSBURGH -- Tuesday was a good news/bad news sort of night for the Cavaliers. Good news: They played their most complete game of the preseason thus far, especially at the defensive end. A refreshing response to several days of intense practices devoted to that effort.
Bad news: It was still a loss, the third of the preseason in as many tries, 90-86 to the Boston Celtics at the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Event Center.
Bad news: Ben Wallace missed the game with back soreness and his replacement, Anderson Varejao, was quickly in foul trouble.
Good news: That meant rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson got plenty of playing time and they responded by both playing reasonably well.
This could go on and on, but the point is that while the Cavs are still pretty far from being healthy and ready for the real thing, improvement is being shown.

"There were a lot of positives to take out of this game," coach Mike Brown said."This was the best defense we've played by far. We had some concerns the first few games and for the most part we were decent in most of those areas and I'm excited to see that improvement."

Brian Windhorst's Cavaliers Blog: In the preseason, avoid the scoreboard

by Brian Windhorst Tuesday October 14, 2008, 11:04 PM

medium_hicksonks.jpg
Keith Srakocic/Associated PressJ.J. Hickson has captivated the attention of his teammates on the Cavaliers --- for both good and bad reasons.
PITTSBURGH -- You simply can't watch a preseason game and take it face value. So the Cavs lost to the Celtics (again) on Tuesday here at the Petersen Event Center -- which, by the way, is a massive improvement from the standard Pitt preseason site, the thankfully soon-to-be razed Mellon Arena. While I am sure many of you who are also Browns fans can accurately expound on the value of winning an exhibition game or two, the final score usually isn't very meaningful. Here is what was, in my humble opinion:
? If you want to have fun while attending a Cavs preseason game -- and, hey, there are two more this week back in Cleveland should you desire -- never take your eye off rookie J.J. Hickson. And then whenever he makes a play of note, good or bad, look over at the Cavs bench. Nobody gets more cheers and encouragement or looks of sheer dismay than J.J. It's been awhile since the Cavs have had a first-round draft pick who holds as much interest as Hickson, not just because he's so talented but because the Cavs really could use him right away. The team knows this, which is why he gets such reactions.

Cavaliers Insider: Is back a big issue for Big Ben?

by Brian Windhorst Tuesday October 14, 2008, 8:17 PM

medium_bwallace.jpg
Tony Dejak/Associated PressAre training camp issues with Ben Wallace's back a sign of continuing problems during the regular season?
PITTSBURGH -- When Ben Wallace was right last season, he proved to be the sort of difference-making defensive player the Cavaliers craved when they traded for him. When he wasn't right, he wasn't. Which is why there is already some building concern within the team as the veteran forward deals with a fresh round of back problems. It has caused him to miss three practices over the last week and Tuesday kept him back in Cleveland as the Cavs faced the Boston Celtics at the University of Pittsburgh in a preseason game.
Wallace is having stiffness and soreness in his lower back. The team has been vague in discussing the issue, but it is the same area that forced him out of games last spring. As an undersized forward at 6-foot-8, Wallace has always relied on his athleticism to be a tenacious rebounder and defender.
"I'm concerned, but I'm concerned about any of our guys who is hurt," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "But at the same time, it is a chance for the young guys to play."

That may be good in the preseason, but relying on backup rookies J.J. Hickson and Darnell Jackson along with veteran Lorenzen Wright may be a risky proposition in the early going of the regular season.
"With back problems, only rest can help," LeBron James said. "Hopefully the training staff can get him as close to 100 percent as possible. We need our whole group to do what we want to do."

Cavs' Pavlovic eager for a new start
Shooting guard coming off holdout last season, injuries
Thursday, October 16, 2008
BY MIKE POPOVICH
[email protected]

INDEPENDENCE Sasha Pavlovic sees this as a chance to start over.

There are no negotiation hangups hovering over the Montenegran swingman and the Cavaliers.

Aside from the mild ankle sprain that set him back last week, it is just a matter of when Pavlovic will have a chance to help his team this season.

"I can't wait to start," he said the day before the Cavs opened camp.

Pavlovic held out during last year's entire camp while a new three-year contract was being negotiated. He practiced and kept himself in shape but did not make his first appearance until the third game of the regular season.

"Now I know what it means when you miss training camp," Pavlovic said.

"I think that's very important for one NBA season. So I'm excited to be here."

Pavlovic spent the majority of the first half of the 2007-08 season as the Cavs' starting shooting guard before spraining his foot near the end of January. It forced him to miss 23 games.

An ankle sprain near the end of the regular season cost Pavlovic most of the first-round playoff series against Washington. He made eight appearances off the bench in the postseason.

"It was a hard season for me," Pavlovic said. "It was hard mentally because I was just hurt. I tried to play, tried to get back, and I didn't think I showed what I could do.

"Now I forgot all about last season."
