The Ohio State alumni team defeated Purple Hearts 93-58 in the first round behind a dominant second quarter

The No. 3 seeded Carmen’s Crew, the Ohio State alumni team, won its first game of the tournament this year, taking down the No. 6-seeded Purple Hearts 93-58

The Purple Hearts got off to a hot start, taking a 19-18 lead into the second quarter. From there, it was all Carmen’s Crew.

The Ohio State alumni team outscored Purple Hearts 27-4 in the second quarter and 26-18 in the third quarter to run away with the first-round win.

The Wesson brothers, Andre and Kaleb, led the way for Carmen’s Crew with 12 points each, while Desonta Bradford and Jamel Morris recorded 11 points each. Morris added five rebounds and four assists. Kaleb Wesson added seven rebounds and three assists.

12 players scored for Carmen’s Crew, including 43-year-old Jeff Gibbs, who drilled the game-winning three to hit the target score. Jared Sullinger made his long-awaited return to the court, recording nine points and six rebounds in 15 minutes.

Keyshawn Woods recorded eight points and Kyle Young recorded seven points.

The team shot 30-for-64 (46.9%) from the field and 10-for-29 (34.5%) from the three-point line. They were also 23-for-28 (82.1%) from the free-throw line.

Darius Adams led the way for Purple Hearts with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. D’Vauntes Smith recorded nine points, and Davon Haynes recorded eight points.

Now, Carmen’s Crew will move on to face the Dayton alumni team and host school for the Dayton Regional, Red Scare.

The No. 2 seeded Red Scare defeated the No. 7 seeded DaGuys STL 88-74 to advance to the second round.

Wes Clark, who won the 2022 TBT championship with Blue Collar U, recorded 16 points, along with Ryan Mikesell, to lead Red Scare. Mikesell added seven points, while Clark added five rebounds and six assists.

Darrell Davis recorded 13 points, and Scoochie Smith added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Marcus Santos-Silva added 14 points, and Cleveland Melvin added nine points off the bench.

This is the seventh appearance by Carmen’s Crew in The Basketball Tournament, and they won the championship and one million dollar prize in 2019.
