Nugget star's pal accused in assault

Article Last Updated: 04/06/2007 11:52:50 PM MDT

A friend of Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony allegedly punched out a 19-year-old autograph seeker who became belligerent when the basketball player refused to sign at a convenience store, Denver police say.
The alleged assault happened early March 18 at a 7-Eleven store in southwest Denver, according to a police report obtained by 9News.
The alleged victim, Brandon Herrera, told police the assault happened about 2:30 a.m. at 1850 S. Sheridan Blvd.
Herrera asked Anthony for an autograph and, when the basketball superstar refused, Herrera called him a "punk" and started an argument, said the police report, based on a witness statement. A person with Anthony, described in the report as the athlete's friend, then "punched, pushed and slammed" Herrera to the floor, the report said.

Anthony has had well-documented troubles in the past, including a cameo appearance in the infamous "stop snitching" video and a possession of marijuana charge in Denver that was dropped by the city attorney's office.
In December, Anthony was suspended 15 games and fined $782,340 by the NBA for his role during a brawl with the New York Knicks.
In July, a roommate and childhood friend of Anthony's was arrested on suspicion of marijuana possession and cited for three traffic offenses while driving Anthony's car in Lochbuie.

How are Carmelo's past incidences relevant here?

I'm probably quicker to defend Carmelo than most on this site, but I know he's a thug. That article is still poorly written to paint Carmelo in a bad light.

The punk who got hit deserved it. Harass an athlete at 2:30 AM (probably alcohol involved) and then call him a punk when he doesn't abide by your request, and you get what you deserve. And I'm no Carmelo Anthony fan.

    Flocka Where you going? NOWHERE!

I agree. Many times people feel they can do or say anything to celebrities because they can either do nothing in return, or the person gets media attention because of what the celebrity did to them.

    1. The first incident is a current one. It happened last month and was updated 6 Apr 07. The past incidents may not be really relevant, especially, since Carmelo Anthony is not being charged/accused in this incident; however, he was "involved".

    2. I didn't want to start a new Carmelo thread and this is the only one I could find (via the "search").

    3. I didn't write the article. However, it was printed in a respected newspaper (Denver Post). I have no idea whether or not they have a bias toward Carmelo Anthony.

My post wasn't directed toward you, but none of Carmelo's incidents are relevant.

As near as I can tell, Carmelo just has a few friends from the 'hood who he's loyal to even though they don't have the best judgment in the world. I'm not trying to imply that he's an angel, but my impression is that he's basically a good-hearted fellow who hasn't entirely broken links with the rather rough part of Baltimore where he grew up. Regarding this particular incident, the "fan" sounds like a complete ass, but 'Melo and his friends have to learn to let the bullshit slide in these instances.

No, his friend needs to learn not to pop some asshole in the mouth when they're being an asshole.

Now that I think about is this even news?
