Capital head coach Collins accepts Saginaw Valley St. job
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (AP) -- Capital head coach Jim Collins has been hired as Saginaw Valley State's next coach, the schools announced Friday.
He replaces Randy Awrey, whose contract with Saginaw Valley State expires Monday.
Collins was 66-51 in 11 seasons at Capital, an NCAA Division III team in the Ohio Athletic Conference. A three-time OAC coach of the year, he led the Crusaders to the divisional playoffs in each of the last three seasons, losing each time to the eventual national champion.
Capital enjoyed seven straight winning seasons under Collins. In 2006, the Crusaders finished their regular season 9-1 for the first time. The school announced his resignation on Friday.
"We are extremely excited to have Jim Collins take over our football program," Mike Watson, Saginaw Valley State's athletic director, said in a statement. "Jim has a tireless work ethic and an enthusiastic attitude."
Collins served as a graduate assistant at Central Michigan from 1989-90 before taking over as offensive coordinator at Illinois Wesleyan in 1991. From there, he accepted his first head coaching job, at Dubuque. He was there from 1994-96 before taking over at Capital.
Saginaw Valley State, a Division II school in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, announced Nov. 30 that it was not renewing Awrey's contract. The university said an investigation by an independent auditing firm and outside legal counsel found Level I secondary violations during the 2005 season and a portion of the 2007 season.
