Legends stop Erie guarantee
Sunday, April 22, 2007

ERIE, PA. Erie Freese owner Dave Hodas guaranteed his basement-dwelling club would knock off the Canton Legends on Saturday night.

Hodas will have to pay up, but the Legends got all they could handle from a struggling Erie franchise.

Legends defensive back JoJo Polk had two interceptions, the second coming with 12 seconds left, as Canton (6-3) held on for a 48-44 American Indoor Football Association victory.

By Jim Thomas

CANTON When last seen, the RiverRats were seen scurrying back to Pittsburgh, their tails tucked between their legs after losing to the Canton Legends, 45-11, in February.

But these 'Rats have regrouped and mutated into a team. After opening its inaugural American Indoor Football Association season with three straight losses, Pittsburgh (4-5) hosts the rematch with the Legends (6-3) at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Ice Garden Arena in Belle Vernon, Pa.

Hogan's heroes: Legends get victory
Saturday, May 19, 2007
By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON With playoff jockeying on the line, the last thing the Legends needed was a 6-foot blonde behind their bench. Canton Legends Head Coach Bobby Olive watched his team put 10 points on the scoreboard in the first half and play a brand of football that is best described as distracted.

Seated on the stage behind the Legends' bench was pop singer Brooke Hogan, daughter of Hulk Hogan. She sang the national anthem and wore 2-inch heels. She towered over Olive and several players.

In front of a quaint crowd of about 1,000 at Memorial Civic Center, the first-half buzz in the building was about Brooke.

Hogan left at halftime, and Canton found its game. The Legends beat Johnstown, 38-16, and improved to 8-4. It's the same record the team had at this point last year when they surged to win a league title.

Legends gain win on safety
Saturday, June 2, 2007

CANTON The Legends rallied for a 52-50 comeback victory Friday night over Huntington (W.Va.) to clinch an AIFA playoff opener home game.

Kevin Mason found Cornelius White in the back of the end zone with eight seconds left to tie the game at 50-50. After missing a rouge, Canton's Tomas Rodriguez blocked a long field-goal attempt as time expired as the Legends covered up a Heroes ballcarrier to force a safety on the game's final play.

CANTON Legends Head Coach Bobby Olive said anyone who missed last week's game at the Memorial Civic Center against Huntington blew it.

"That was the best (indoor) game ever," Olive said of Canton's 52-50, last-play win over the Heroes that earned a home-field playoff opener.

The good news is fans who missed the first one can get a do-over. The same teams meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in a North Division semifinal at the Civic Center.

The American Indoor Football Association's best rivalry is about to get better.

The Canton Legends (11-4) visit the Reading Express (13-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in the North Division Final. The winner advances to the July 23 Championship Game in Florence, S.C., to play either Lakeland (Fla.) or Mississippi.

It's the second straight season Canton and Reading will meet for the North title. Last year, the Legends went to Pennsylvania and upset the top seed, 44-24, en route to capturing the American Indoor Football League's crown.

Legends aren't worrying about eBay, just want to get a win
Saturday, April 12, 2008
BY Jim Thomas
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

First-year head coach Ed Korns said an 0-3 start hasn't put the hurt on the Canton Legends' spirits.

"We know we can play," Korns said from Blacksburg, Va., on Friday while attending Virginia Tech's spring practice. "We've been in every game. We've had our opportunities. We just haven't taken advantage."

That's for sure. Canton lost its opener when it lost a fumble at the Erie RiverRats' 1-yard line in the final two minutes. The Carolina Speed put the brakes on Canton's final play at the Speed's 1 as time expired in Week 2. They were flat in Week 3, losing, 55-39, at Florence.

Now the Legends face the red-hot expansion Augusta Colts tonight. Hosting the Colts, winners of three straight, is tough enough. But the team also knows it was put up for sale on eBay this week.

"It really hasn't affected us," Korns said . "I told the guys we have to get into the win column. That's how we're judged, on winning games."

Canton Legends owner Joe Hoffman examining other avenues to sell team
Tuesday, April 15, 2008
BY Jim Thomas
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON Joe Hoffman likely won't get a buyer from eBay, but the Canton Legends owner sounds as if he hopes to find one soon.

The team's posting on eBay ? with a minimum bid of $300,000 ? expires at 4:31 p.m. today. Whether it sells now or later, however, it appears that Hoffman will not be steering the ship for long.

And where that ship docks would be up to new ownership.

"It's unfortunate that I myself could not get us to the next level," Hoffman said by phone Monday evening. "Myself and my family have put a lot of effort and resources into the team. Hopefully, (a move) is not how it will end."

Hoffman said he wants the fourth-year American Indoor Football Association team to remain in town. In an e-mail sent earlier Monday, he said the future of the franchise could be determined as soon as this morning.

Olive plans to put the 'oh' in Legends' offense
Friday, May 2, 2008
BY Jim Thomas
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

CANTON The mad scientist is back.

"I've got to get to my laboratory and start putting together a lineup," Bobby Olive said Thursday, two days after returning as head coach of the Canton Legends.

Canton's coach in 2006 and 2007, Olive's first game back is Saturday as the Legends travel to Erie (5-2) in an American Indoor Football Association North matchup. He takes over a Legends squad that is 0-6 and has scored just 13 points combined in their last two games.

Former first-year coach Ed Korns will remain as defensive coordinator, the position he held previously under Olive. Korns has returned to that role, Olive said, "because he didn't have any choice. We wouldn't be friends anymore if he didn't come back. I need him there (at defensive coordinator)."

Olive's magic in Canton has been on the offensive end. He enticed indoor football veteran Kevin Mason to quarterback the Legends midway through the 2006 season when the team was .500. Together, they routinely lit up scoreboards for 50 or 60 points on their way to the AIFL title.
