  • Remembering Challenger 20 Years Later

<!--summary-->CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Twenty years ago, space shuttle Challenger blew apart into jets of fire and plumes of smoke, a terrifying sight witnessed by the families of the seven astronauts and by those who came to watch the historic launch of the first teacher in space. <!--/summary-->The disaster shattered NASA's spit-shined image and the belief that spaceflight could become as routine as airplane travel. The investigation into the accident's cause revealed a space agency more concerned with schedules and public relations than safety and sound decision-making.

I watched the Challenger explode from my junior high in Port Orange. We were outside in the courtyard watching it go up. When the boosters split, I ran into Mr. Tipton's class and asked him to turn on the tv. "Tip" was a huge fan of the shuttle program and since he was my next class, we spent the next 50 minutes watching the news.

It had a very profound effect on the next week in school as we all realized that we just watched 7 people die with our own eyes.

Sadly, schedules and PR is still what NASA is all about it. Big fucking waste of money. Surprise! We're spending $5 billion a year to service the remaining shuttles even though they aren't flying. We've spent $150 Billion to research and figure out what's wrong with these things yet there is no good solution out there besides scrapping the shuttle and coming out with a new design. Why are we still even thinking about the space shuttle? Well, we need them to finish another orbiting waste of money - the International Space Station! NASA's manned missions as of late are completely worthless because of perceived risk and fear of losing funding. If we had spent all the money on sending men to Mars instead of the ISS and shuttles, we'd BE there by now and reaping the benefits of ass-loads of technological breakthroughs discovered in trying to live on a place like Mars.

    Mars, bitches.
    M-A-R-S. Mars.

I remember watching it at school.

Kids don't care about sending teachers into space anymore. At one point, they cared about sending that guy from nSync into space, but not so much anymore. One thing that transcends the generations: space ice cream from COSI.

I was home sick from school that day. 5th grade. There was an astronaut(cant remember who) that was going to do a presentation during an assembly that day. Our entire school watched, with our guest speaker, as the shuttle exploded. My mom got me out of bed and made me watch the news. She said that it was something that I needed to see. I think for her it brought up memories of the JFK assassination as far as being of major importance to our country. The real tragedy in that was the fact that it didn't really change the way the space program thinks. Hmph.
