Can The U and UF Sustain Success Simultaneuously?

mross34

Rock, Flag, and Eagle
The choice of Urban's replacement may be more important than first glance. With the program Randy Shannon is building down in Miami, could Florida enter a down period?

Here's a history of recent success between the two programs...

Year....The U..................UF
2009....9-3 (Shannon)......12-1 (Meyer)
2008....7-6 (Shannon)......13-1 (Meyer)
2007....5-7 (Shannon).......9-4 (Meyer)
2006....7-6 (Coker)..........13-1 (Meyer)
2005....9-3 (Coker)...........9-3 (Meyer)
2004....9-3 (Coker)...........7-5 (Zook)
2003...11-2 (Coker)..........8-5 (Zook)
2002...12-1 (Coker)..........8-5 (Zook)
2001...12-0 (Coker)..........10-2 (Spurrier)
2000...11-1 (Davis)..........10-3 (Spurrier)
1999.....9-4 (Davis)...........9-4 (Spurrier)
1998.....9-3 (Davis)..........10-2 (Spurrier)
1997.....5-6 (Davis)..........10-2 (Spurrier)
1996.....9-3 (Davis)..........12-1 (Spurrier)
1995.....8-3 (Davis)..........12-1 (Spurrier)
1994...10-2 (Erickson)......10-2-1 (Spurrier)
1993.....9-3 (Erickson)......11-2 (Spurrier)
1992...11-1 (Erickson).......9-4 (Spurrier)
1991...12-0 (Erickson)......10-2 (Spurrier)
1990...10-2 (Erickson)........9-2 (Spurrier)
1989...11-1 (Erickson)........7-5 (Hall)
1988...11-1 (Johnson)........7-5(Hall)
1987...12-0 (Johnson)........6-6 (Hall)
1986...11-1 (Johnson)........6-5 (Hall)
1985...10-2 (Johnson)........9-1-1 (Hall)
1984.....8-5 (Johnson)........9-1-1 (Hall)

13 times in the past 25 seasons The U has won 10+ games. 12 times in the past 25 seasons Florida has done the same. Only 4 times (2001, 2000, 1994, 1991) have they been during the same season. By and large it seems one program's elite success coincides with the other program's down period.

There should be enough talent for both of these programs to be at the top of college football at the same time, but it hasn't happened that way. Can they both be successful?

Honestly I think Florida is going to become a 8-9 win type program with the coaching candidates that are out there and the loss of Meyer. Jimbo Fisher is going to fail IMO at FSU. Jimbo has never been THAT great of a OC and FSU hasnt been the same since 01. I doubt that Bowden was the reason they werent an elite program.

Shannon is a Butch Davis type coach IMO. He can recruit really well and can take control of SoFla recruting which is enough to make Miami a Top 10 program. While I think over the next few years all the programs wont be Top 5 programs. I do think Miami is going to be the best and probably win a couple ACC titles and become a Top 10 team.

Not to sound smart, but Shannon is 21-16 in his tenure. I am not convinced the program he is 'building' is a good one, yet.
Well, he's getting back to the felon percentage the U had when they struck fear into the hearts of their opponents. For various reasons.

Damn, great thread!

I'm not sold on Da U being back yet, and UF will surely go through some single digit win seasons starting soon, who to choose will be better...?

Maybe the answer lies in September next season......I'll be there :)

We don't get the South Florida guys, and did not get them when we were hot or when we were down, so I do not think there is a lot to that.

Sort of a false association based upon the vagaries of NCAA probation and coaching change timing.

Edit: But a great question and a bunch of hard work. Good stuff. But it escapes me as a duality.

Exactly. It's hard to be elite for a sustained period, and two teams being so at the same time is even more improbable. Miami is perfectly capable of winning 10 games a year while Meyer wins 12. They just recruited and developed players very poorly after the turn of the millenium.

Both were quite good for almost a decade.

Miami was extremely young this past season and went 9-3. I'd bet they get double digit wins next season.
I understand. My point was that I am not ready to say Shannon is building a successful program yet. 9-3 followed by a 10 win season is a start, but I am just not convinced of it.

Florida = 90K stadium + Academics + great alum base + strong conference + TV money.

Miami = someone else's 70K stadium + rich tradition of thugs and bling on sidelines + two guys willing to leave Dade county for away games + basketball conference.

I think the equation still favors the gators, but being football king in the ACC will be much, much easier than being football king of the SEC.

I think the shrewdest man in the world is the AD who put Miami in the Big East and then in the ACC.

Toss me in the group that is uncertain about what Shannon is doing in Miami. 9-3 is a nice record, but watching a handful of their games the past few years, Shannon's coaching ability is still something I very much question.

I think it is true that South Florida has not been a hot bed for UF, but they did get Bostic from Wellington and a few kids from western Palm Beach county the last several years. The interesting thing is Meyer has made inroads in south Florida this year with Christian and Elam from Palm Beach county, Riggs from Broward and Ajagbe from Dade.

I agree on it not being a "duality". A more interesting question would be can the state of Florida have 3 "elite" teams at the same time. By elite in any one year, I mean top 10 in the MNC hunt type teams.
