Can home theatre system be repaired?

A friends house was hit by lightning and he gave me his Samsung 1000w m/n HT-TWZ412 home theater system... I suspect a bad transformer. I am perfectly capable of replacing it if that's all it is but would like some feedback from the forum. Am I waisting time and money hear. If not then can you provide some guidelines I should follow or links to websites that would be useful. Thanks

You say he gave you the system. I'm taking that literally, speakers and all.

Test the speakers.

If those work you are ahead of the game.

You can marry them to any 5.1 speaker feeding amp you get at low-low prices from Amazon. You'll save about 125 over the entire system combined.

As for the stricken amp-DVD player itself, there are so many components which could and possibly have gotten fried you are likely to be chasing your tail to nail down the last piece of toast on the PCB. Besides which it is behind the curve technically, no BD. Why pour money into an old black hole?
