What camera is she using now?

What is your desired budget?

She uses a couple point-and-shoot that we've had for a while. Nothing fancy.

I have no idea on the budget. My mindset is that we should get something as good as what we might need, rather than what we need right now. But I don't know what we need right now or what we might need, so I'm pretty much useless in this discussion.

As long as I feel like I'm getting a bargain, I don't care how much it costs.

Josh,

So I got a Canon T2i w/18-55 & 55-250 last year for Christmas. my brother got me another lense for my birthday another lens (50 f/1.8). I find myself using the 50 all the time. I'm thinking about upgrading the 18-55 and eventually my 55-250. My question is, is it worth it in terms of quality overall to step up to a medium priced lens (ie ~$500-$600) or should I just save my money and go for a $1000 lens. I consider myself an amateur with some slowing improving skills. I mainly shoot my family and soon to be mobile daughter, landscapes, indoors/outdoors, I guess you'd say shoot pretty much every style.

any advice would be appreciated.
I wouldn't replace the 18-55. It isn't very valuable for resale, you already have a great 50mm lens, and quality wide angle lenses are really expensive, and in my opinion are a big step below the high end 70-200, just because wide angle lenses have less bokeh (blur in the background) and sacrifice image clarity for viewing range. I do not own a great wide angle, and am planning to sell my 24-70mm f2.8.

I use my kit lens for holidays, 18-135, and used to use the 18-55.

the lens to save up for is the canon 70-200.

when I switched from a canon 30d + sigma 70-200 f2.8 to a canon 1d mark ii + canon 70-200 f2.8, my keeper rate went from 25-30% to 70-75%. I would estimate that was primarily the lens, as I can till take great pictures on a 60d with my great lenses, but can't take consistent shots with a budget lens. now this is more for action, sports or moving subjects but the difference in image quality is major. I had to work my way up slowly as a recent college grad, so gradually upgrading is fine, but if you can afford it, save up for the canon.

note this is for telephoto and super telephoto lenses. in the fisheye, macro and wide angle lens category, there are some solid or nearly equal third party brands, like tokina. it just depends on the lens. I am selling my canon 24-70 f2.8 which costs over a grand and probably replacing it with a $500-600 Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 wide angle lens.

also keep in mind that cameras have crop factors. a rebel or 60d sensor is a 1.6 crop, meaning all lens focal lengths are multiplied by 1.6. so a 24-70 is actually 38.4-112mm lens. a full frame body has no crop so it is the exact length listed on the lens

also EF-S lenses only work on certain cameras, like the rebel or 60d. they are not compatible with high end cameras like the 1D. however, EF lenses are compatible with all canon bodies.

This photography stuff ends up being a real addiction. I started off a couple of years ago with a T1i and the kit 18-55 / 55-250. Enjoyed those enough to save up for some "L glass" (Canon's "Luxury or pro lenses")...the 70-200 f/4. Ended up adding more L's...17-40 & 24-70. Upgraded to a 60D. I've really gotten into landscape shooting, easy to do in Colorado, and decided I wanted to move up to a full frame camera, so upgraded to the 5D mark II. Got my first prime (fixed focal length) lens early this year, and fell in love with those. So, sold all my zooms and invested in all prime lenses...currently have the Zeiss Distagon 21mm (for wide angle stuff, to go with the Canon 50/85/135mm L lenses. Fortunately, I've always been pretty smart with my money, and have enough of a nest egg to dip into that I could afford some higher end stuff.

So, yeah, has turned into a fullblown hobby (or addiction depending on your perspective ). Now I spend most of my time off out wandering around looking for things to shoot and have friends/coworkers bugging me to take pics of their damn kids, which I don't mind doing. But, it'll always just be a hobby for me, not looking to turn it into any kind of income source.

I blame you, jwins, for starting me down the path a couple of years back. But, it keeps me sane and keeps me occupied.

Okay, so the T3i looks like a winner. I'll just have to keep an eye out on a bargain.

In disappointing news, none of the lenses from her Canon AE-1 will work with the digital bodies without an adapter and even then, none of the electronic features would work with the lenses. That sucks.

Been there. Went to the new Canon digital camera system and never looked back. Better in most every way except a little clunky. Hard to beat the low end Canon and Nikon digital cameras for value and features. Buy just the "body" and get one or two aftermarket lenses(Tamron,Sigma, etc) that do what you want.
If your in NYC you have a lot of camera shops to browse in.

If you think cameras are a bad adiction, don't get started on stereo equiptment! But hobies are important for one's sanity.:bonk:

yeah you can manually focus them, but no one wants to do that.

as for looking for deals, SlickDeals lets registered users add up to fifty deal alerts. so when a thread surfaces for T3i or disgusting pink wine coolers, it will send you an alert, by email, text, etc. you can edit and delete them, and I've never received SlickDeals spam.

I tried the Tamron 10-24 and was unimpressed.

I hear great things about the Tokina 11-16, though that isn't in your budget

you can find it for 550 used on fredmiranda

Awesome! Signed up for slickdeals notifications.

And it wasn't a wine cooler. It was a malt beverage targeted at women. And it was delicious. Another product that lived a tragically short life. :(

BTW, for anyone in the market, I have a brand new Canon 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS lens. it retails for about 220, I would sell mine for 120 + shipping/Paypal fees.

Ended up with the t3i + EF-S 18-55 + EF-S 55-250 f4/5.6. In transit now. :groove:

I'm sure I could've held out for a better deal eventually, but no chance of hitting one of Amazon's lightning deals and we really wanted to have it before Christmas. And I'd already missed out on a couple that sold out very quickly.

Thanks, Josh!
