California, Fresno State, Cal State - Bakersfield Series

Weather looks bad for the Bakersfield series.

Ya know, i used to hope for rain outs in some of our past spring break trips just to save our RPI. Looks like the karma police got me this year :(

0-3 so far on this trip and our rpi is up from 166 to 138. SOS now stands at 88..that's good for second best in the B1G behind Iowa.

Last game against Fresno State Cancelled


FRESNO, Calif. - The Wednesday night baseball game between Ohio State and No. 10 Fresno State at Beiden Stadium on the Fresno State campus has been cancelled because of rain. The team is now en route to Bakersfield, Calif. - about two hours southeast of Fresno - and will try to close out its spring trip with three games against the CSU Bakersfield Road Runners Thursday through Saturday...weather permitting, of course.
The Buckeyes, who had just two games cancelled because of weather the last three years, have now lost four games in three cities the last 18 days because of foul weather. The team did not get to play Western Carolina and Akron March 5-6 in Forest City, N.C., and it lost a game this past weekend against California in Berkeley.
Ohio State is 6-8 on the season and will meet a Road Runners team that is 16-5 and playing very well. The team is on a five-game winning streak that includes an 8-3 win over defending national champion South Carolina.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield played under the lights for the first time ever at Hardt Field and its players capped a bright, memorable night for the three-year-old program by defeating Ohio State, 13-2, behind the pitching of Mike McCarthy and an 11-hit attack.
McCarthy improved to 3-2 by pitching 8.0 innings of six-hit baseball. He did not allow an earned run, struck out nine Buckeyes and walked four before exiting after throwing 124 pitches, 83 of them for strikes. Four players had multiple hits and multiple RBI led by Ryan McIntyre's three hits and three RBI games from Kevin Younger and Andrew Letourneau.
Ohio State didn't help its cause by only managing seven hits, but also by committing three errors - two in the first inning that staked the Roadrunners to a 2-0 lead, hitting into three double plays and walking 11 batters.
It was, however, a game through five innings. Ohio State came back to tie things up at 2-all in the third inning. Ryan Cypret hit a two-strike, two-out double deep into the left field corner to score Matt Streng from second and Brian DeLucia, who motored around the bases to score from first. The hit extended Cypret's hitting streak to 14 games.

Finally, a win. The 7 Bakersfield errors probably helped. Looks like they wanted to rest Rucinski and Grieve on the trip. Rucinski for his finger that's been an issue since last year.

Buckeyes Stop Roadrunners, 10-8

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Ohio State coach Greg Beals stressed the importance of "team" at the ball park Saturday. He told his troops, who had lost six consecutive games coming into a series finale with CSU Bakersfield, to fight their tails off for the team and to get it done as a team. The team listened.

Capitalizing on opportunities, seven Roadrunner errors, five RBI from Ryan Cypret and runs scored from seven different players, Ohio State snapped its losing streak and closed out its six-game California spring trip with a 10-8 win in front of 723 fans at Hardt Field. The win improved OSU's record to 7-10 and it snapped a seven-game win streak for CSU Bakersfield and dropped its record to 18-6.

I was a bit concerned about Rucinski and Grieve. I was hoping it was blisters again with Drew, but Grieve pitched pretty well vs Cal and just disappeared the rest of the trip..glad it's nothing serious.

I was very surprised to see Strayer take the mound..glad to have him back for league play.

1-6 on that trip and our rpi went from 166 to 89. Our SOS in now 36th.

Maybe. But in my opinion, the Big Ten is pretty much on the same level as the MAC is in football. If Ohio U. played Alabama, OSU, USC, Clemson, Texas and Virginia Tech and went 1-6, that would be pretty good. That's how I feel OSU is right now.

The RPI formula is confusing, but you are rewarded for winning and or playing a tough schedule. Stanford was like 6-7 to start the year and they were like the 5th rated RPI team in the nation because they had the toughest schedule in the nation. It will all balance out by the end of the season. RPI numbers are skewed until about mid-year.
