The Golden Bears are currently 10-4 on the year and are ranked 20th in the Nation by Baseball America. They will play 11 of their next 12 games at Evans Field on the campus of the University of California.
On a sad side note, this will be the final year of baseball for Cal. They are dropping the sport after the 2011 season

The Roadrunners are 12-5 heading into a weekend series with Lafayette before taking on the Buckeyes. The recently completed a 3 game series at #4 and defending National Champion South Carolina going 1-2. Cal State - Bakersfield in ranked 30th in the latest Baseball America poll.

All in all, this is a tremendous upgrade in competition from recent years. Trading in Bethue-Cookman for Fresno State will definitely help the RPI. Whether it helps the W-L record is another matter.

You have to win this one, as the chance to take an overall series record will be out the door with the end of series.
I know you were being facetious, but I'm not holding my breath. As rhg posted in the RussMatt Invitation thread, 1-7 will be optimistic. These are 3 top 30 teams here, not Bethune-Cookman, Rollins and Webber International, teams OSU played at this time last year (and OSU lost to all three of those juggernauts)

This will be a seriously tough road trip for you guys. I hope you have a lot of pitching because that is a lot of games in a short period of time.

ASU lost to Cal State Bakersfield earlier this year.

I think tOSU should start their season in California every year instead of Florida because you can play a lot of good teams in a condensed area. Definitely would help your RPI and SOS. Would probably help recruiting too since California puts out tons of kids for baseball.

I don't think they want to start their season playing top teams. Makes more sense to play some other cold weather teams early since both will be adjusting to outdoor baseball. I do like to see them play some heavyweights after the fist couple weeks though.

Spot on, reag. Like my 1980's Florida State model - if you want to be taken seriously and get big games you have to agree to play at their place (and beat them). My Freshman year the Seminoles came to Columbus in '82 and beat the Bucks with no return game schedule in Tallahassee. OSU needs to schedule the heavyweights if they want to compete at the highest level. Not to knock Webber's program, but they aren't even Div I.

This is an excellent point also. The Buckeyes must be at their very best to compete against the likes of the Cal-Bakersfields of the world. No use in going to California and getting humiliated. That wouldn't do much for recruiting. But if they compete well, the sizable alumni presence in California would almost guarantee we could be in play for some of those great recruits.

I'm not saying to schedule all tough teams because every team needs a few cupcakes in the schedule, but playing a majority cupcakes is not good.

Ohio State has a national draw, and they should be able to pull kids from every corner of the country. Leaving the East Coast to get some exposure on the west coast is a good thing. Obviously you don't want to get creamed, but tOSU usually has a ball club that can compete so I don't think they will get embarrassed.

The Bears proved to be rude hosts, beating the Buckeyes 4-0 and 11-1. The third game was thankfully cacelled

    From the Official Site

BERKELEY, Calif. - California's baseball team is good. Real good. Sunday, Baseball America's No. 15 ranked team received two outstanding pitching performances and got plenty of offense in sweeping a doubleheader from Ohio State, 4-0 and 11-1, at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears improved to 12-5 with the wins while Ohio State drops to 6-7.
In the first game, the continuation of a suspended game from Saturday, Ohio State managed just five hits against Cal left-hander Justin Jones, who went 8.0 innings for the win and improved to 2-1 on the year. Jones took over with Cal leading 2-0 from Saturday and allowed just one Buckeye to reach third base. He was helped by a defense that turned three double plays and would duplicate that total in the second game.
Ohio State freshman Greg Greve was handed the ball after Dean Wolosiansky (1-2) opened this game Saturday against Cal ace Eric Johnson. Greve was solid, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing just two runs in the second inning and closing out with five consecutive scoreless innings. He scattered three hits, walked three and struck out four.

Buekeyes lose lead in 8th and lose close game

The Buckeyes gave it a valiant effort tonight against Fresno State. The game was tied 1 to 1 til the Bucks took a 2 to 1 lead late in the game. Needed 4 more outs to secure the victory, but a balk call, a couple of singles, and a non-call on what everyone, including the coaching staff, thought was strike three, gave Fresno the 3 to 2 victory.

The Buckeye pitching staff was solid tonight. We came up a little short, but played well. The balk call, and the no-call on what would have had us out of the inning in the 8th with a strikeout, really hurt. Not sure if the Buekeye pitcher balked or not, but our coaching staff sure wasn't happy, and was even less happy with the no-call on the third strike. Let's just say that the timing of those two calls was poor and rather questionable. And I'm not a fan who ever feels like calls impact games that much. This situation sure felt different.

Anyway, we'll be back at 'em tomorrow, weather permitting.

    Go Bucks!

FRESNO, Calif. - Wow! What a game. Ohio State had the No. 10 team in the nation on the ropes into the eighth inning, but the Fresno State Bulldogs, now 15-2 on the year, rallied for two two-out runs in the eighth to record a 3-2 comeback win over the Buckeyes (6-8) Tuesday night at Pete Beiden Field.
The Bulldogs, enjoying their highest national ranking since they won the College World Series three years ago, scored the tying run on a single, a balk call by the first base ump on Josh Dezse before his first pitch in relief, and another single up the middle.
Then the home team scored the winning run after a stolen base and a single...the single coming after everyone in Scarlet and Gray thought Dezse had backward "K'd" Austin Wynns. But Dezse and the Buckeyes didn't get the call. Next pitch, Wynns singled and Aaron Judge was called safe at home despite a terrific throw to the plate from Brian DeLucia and despite his spikes ripping through the pants of catcher Greg Solomon near the thigh area as Solomon covered the plate.
Both teams received terrific pitching in a strategic game that featured eight pitching changes, four on each side. Cody Kendall improved to 2-0 with the win after pitching 1.1 innings in relief. Closer Charlie Robertson pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in eight appearances.
