Game Thread Cal Bears at tOSU - Sat, Sep 15, Noon ABC

Just got back from Columbus, going to post some thoughts before I read back thru the thread...

Penalties, poor tackling, dropped passes and an inability by DBs to get off blocks. Those were the things I'll remember most about this game. Fortunately those are mostly things that can be fixed, and I don't think any of them point to the long-term future of the program.

It reminded me a lot of last year's Toledo game, which I also attended. The Buckeyes were abused on the edges. Even if they make a few more tackles, there were still exploited pretty bad. They gotta get tougher out there.

I don't want to hear about what-ifs in this game. So what if Cal left points on the field? Catching more passes instead of dropping them, making more kicks instead of missing them, committing less penalties instead of more... those are all things that go into being the superior team on the field that day. People said it about Miami two weeks ago, they said it about UCF last week and I bet they were saying it about Cal tonight. None of that matters.

I was disappointed that it looked like Cal was better coached today an made better adjustments. They certainly had their own mistakes, but I was impressed with the way they attacked Ohio State on the edges, countered the blitz with screen plays, and adjusted to find a way to contain, stop, and then rattle Braxton Miller for a while in the second half.

Glad to have Jordan Hall back. They missed Carlos Hyde a lot though.

Nathan Williams is out of control, and it hurt the Buckeyes a lot today.

Anybody who thinks The Shoe is quiet can [censored] up a rope. First of all, don't judge the place by what's going on when there's a no-name team on the other side of the field. Say what will about being loud all the time and being a superior fan to all the other people at the game, but some opponents just don't deserve that level of output from the crowd, and quite frankly the team shouldn't need it. I yelled my ass off today. Lost my voice in the 1st quarter. I was in 11C for those who feel the need to compare with their own view of the situation. I want to give credit to the crowd from Cal. They were classy, and they really brought it as fans long before their team came roaring back. I think they lit a spark in that stadium and brought out the best in the home crowd.

There's a thread on Shaggy complaining that the game day atmosphere at their stadium is lame and quiet here. OSU gets more than a handful of compliments on being the loudest stadium they have ever experienced (the 2005 Vince Young game). This "problem" is overblown because no one, except LSU fans (from what I hear), screams and cheers for the entire game. We get very loud when we need to.

LSU not only fields a lame atmosphere for daytime games but as of 2010, they had a losing record at home. I think it may be just above .500 now.

Playing a ton of night games distorts that advantage a bit. The shoe is always rocking for night games, even against Marshall.

I think everyone has touched on all the things I saw so I won't go into great detail. The offense either makes it look easy or fucking impossible. The defense, well it's time to start asking some hard questions there....all the way down from the DC to the 22nd guy on the depth chart. When effort and mental errors are the top deficiencies no one should be above reproach.

My overall take away is to remember it is always relative. There isn't a single team in the B1G I would switch problems with right now. As bad as this OSU team looks compared to recent vintage, it is still as good or better than anyone else in what is obviously a Big East/ACC level bad B1G this year.

Continue to improve, continue to recruit, win 5-6 B1G games, beat the hell out of tsun and lets move on.

Nice story in the San Francisco Chronicle about Cal fans and their game-day experience. One guy said our stadium was the loudest he'd been in, though Rocky Top "came close."

Buckeye football the only game in town

Play of the game

Play of the game?

Not what the Buckeyes did.

Also not what the Cal Bears did...it's what they didn't do.

4th and 1 with around 4:00 minutes to go...and although they've been moving the ball on us all day....they bring out their crappy FG kicker to try a 40+ yarder...missed of course.

As the underdog and visiting team...they don't go for it?!?!

Don't get me wrong, I was happy they didn't, but if they go for it, and get a 1st down..they can run the clock way down before attempting a much shorter FG.....and we are basically cooked.

The football Gods were smiling on the Buckeyes at the end of the 4th quarter on Saturday.

That's what college QBs are supposed to do...that's part of the game. Even Speilman was saying Miller too many times either locks onto his initial read or even has his mind made up before the snap who he's going to throw it to. He missed open guys on a couple plays by throwing to his first receiver without even scanning the field, and those were plays where he wasn't even under pressure yet. He had some great moments and several herpa derp moments.

Some of those bad throws come when they have this righty QB rolling to his left...and the accuracy really suffers. When he rolls to his right, the accuracy is much better.

It may be because I'm old..but our games were more enjoyable to watch when I knew absolutely nothing about in coming freshman..all the facts and evidence about freshman makes me want them to be more productive but in reality they are just freshman and the same goes for back ups they are back ups for a reason so expecting them to play like starters is like fools golds.

There are currently 3 undefeated teams in the conference. The Bucks, Minny and NW.

I was so shocked they didn't go for it, I realized the play only as the field goal attempt was in the air! I assumed the time-out was used to get the play and personnel lined up to go for the first-down.
