Cabrera set to ink Tigers' biggest pact: $153.3 million

KISSIMMEE, Florida -- Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers reached a preliminary agreement Saturday on an eight-year, $153.3 million contract extension, a source close to Cabrera told ESPNdeportes.com on condition of anonymity.

The All-Star third baseman will undergo a physical on Monday to complete the deal, the source said.

"Miguel just signed a big contract," said the source. "The contract will be completed when Miguel takes a physical on Monday."

Overall, it would become the fourth-richest contract in baseball history. Cabrera would trail Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez ($275 million), Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter ($189 million) and Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez ($160 million) in the total salary package listing.

Contd...

I'm more of a BA guy than HR's. HR's are pretty overrated IMO. I'll take the extra .35-.40 in BA than 10-15 HR's.

Plus I prefer my third-baseman to be non lip-stick wearing, shirtless tanning in central park kind of guys.

I agree with you there, but I don't think I could pass him up if he wanted to sign with my team. Cabrera is a great player, but A Rod is one of, if not the, best player in the game.

for as great as he is, who would you rather have coming to the plate in the ninth inning, bases loaded, 2 outs, down by 1 run.

A-Rod consistently shits the bed. Cabrera had more big hits in his rookie season than A-Rod has had in his entire career.

As an Indians fan, Jorge Posada made me more nervous coming to the plate than A-Rod did during the ALDS. I'm not exagerrating either. A-Rod puts up big numbers, but there are lots of hitters I'd rather have than him.

The thing is, you're not signing them for just one year, and the way Cabrera has put on weight, of the softer variety, would definitely cause me to be cautious. I think I'd rather have David Wright or Ryan Braun than Cabrera.

Cabrera is probably the best young talent in the game. For good and bad, he is very much like a young Manny Ramirez. Can't blame the Tigers for locking him up for so long and so much money.

I don't even know if Cabrera was the best young talent on the Marlins last year. I'd take Hanley Ramirez over him.

Cabrera has lost 20 or so pounds and has for the first time hired a personal trainer. Don't think weight will be a big issue. Cabrera is a top 5 talent in MLB and is only 24 years old. I love it as a Tigers fan.

During the regular season, he's arguably the best player in the game. In October however, he turns into Alvaro Espinoza.
