2027 CA DL Richard Wesley (Oregon Verbal)

Richard Wesley visiting Columbus on Friday

Larry Johnson and Ohio State will have a chance to impress one of the top defensive ends in the 2026 class.

Five-star standout Richard Wesley announced he’ll be visiting Columbus on Friday and also has visits set up to Texas A&M and Tennessee over the next few weeks. He just came off a visit to Texas last weekend.

Johnson and OSU offered the California prospect on March 3. Four days later, Wesley reclassified from 2027 to the 2026 recruiting class. Before he reclassified, he was considered the No. 2 prospect in the 2027 cycle. Based on the 247Sports composite, he’s considered the No. 20 player and No. 3 edge in 2026.

This will be Wesley’s first visit to Ohio State, so making a good impression is key if the Buckeyes want to attempt to add the 6-foot-5, 250-pound standout to their 2026 class.

Last year, Wesley recorded 44 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, nine sacks, eight quarterback hurries, two pass deflections, a fumble recovery and three forced fumbles.

How does reclassifying for DL positions impact OSU's recruiting interest? I've read on here coaches like Hartline do not encourage it for WR, but not sure how the other coaches feel with their groups.
It hasn’t seemed like OSU prefers going after guys who reclassify. It seemed like they pulled up on recruiting Jakheem Stewart in the ‘25 cycle mainly due to that(and he barely played many HS games). Problem with guys who reclassify, losing that last year of development can be a very big deal. Especially along the lines, where he may dominate OL as a Junior, but his senior year the OL may get bigger and stronger and won’t have the same domination weekly. It’s a very tricky choice, but I get that the kids want to start their NIL cycle earlier
