Agreed. They probably wish they could have Cody Hodgson back too. I'm really wondering what's going on with the Luongo situation. There had been nothing but talks of a trading him since last summer, but now he's basically splitting time evenly with Cory Schneider. Luongo's started seven games & Schneider will have started seven as well if he get's the expected start tonight. Luongo has been the better goalie this season & playing both of them has worked out well for so far, but I'm curious if they will end up keeping him or not. I get the feeling they are trying to move him & haven't found a suitable deal yet, but maybe, just maybe he's played his way back into there good graces. We'll see.

? Kassian has just as many goals as Hodgson and is a much more physical threat which is what the canucks needed badly. I think the trade worked out well for both so far. As far a the goalie situation goes, why mess with a good thing. I would rather have Schneider long term but with Luongo and his massive contract they wont get as much in return.

Strength for skill was definitely what Vancouver wanted & got in that trade. It was hard watching Kassian play with the Sedins though. While he was basically getting a goal a game with them, they just didn't seem to mesh together right & I think it was the smart choice by Vigneault to go back with Burrows on that line. Kassian had so many chances to score more goals than he did on that line, but I'm interested to see how he will do with Kesler & Higgins in what seems like a nice complimentary 2nd line. I just think Cody Hodgson is going to be a great player & I don't think he's complaining one bit about playing with Vanek & Pominville in Buffalo.

Totally agree with the "why mess with a good thing" in regards to the goalie situation. It's worked well for them so far, so I wouldn't go around messing with it, but the trade rumors are going to persist unless Vancouver comes out & says he's staying. If both goalies are fine with splitting time, which is what it seems like so far, I think it would be a smart move to keep Luongo, at least for the time being.

VANCOUVER ? Losers of two straight games and five of their last seven, the Vancouver Canucks lost off the ice Wednesday when it was revealed that centre Ryan Kesler has a fractured right foot and is sidelined until further notice.

Canuck head coach Alain Vigneault was uncertain how long Kesler will be out but told reporters following practice he assumed it would be ?for a while.? Kesler missed the first 12 games this season as he recovered from shoulder and wrist surgeries. He played the last seven and had five points, including a nice assist Tuesday on Jason Garrison's goal.

?We don't know how long it is yet and as soon as we find out, we'll share it with you,? Vigneault said. ?Any fracture is usually 4-6 weeks depending on the nature of the fracture. Some are less, hairline fractures or whatever. So I haven't gotten any length from our doctors how long this one is going to be.?

Kesler itching ?big-time? to rejoin Canuck lineup
April 6, 2013
Posted by:

Ryan Kesler has played seven games for the Canucks this season and six and a half of those were on a broken right foot. The feisty centre revealed Saturday that he hurt the foot during the second period of the Feb. 15 home game against Dallas when he blocked a shot while penalty killing. That was his first game back after missing the first 12 of the lockout-shortened season due to wrist and shoulder surgeries.

Initial X-rays could not find a break in the foot so he kept playing. ?It wasn?t getting worse but it was staying the same so that?s why we got the CT scan and found out it was broken,? he explained.

The bone has now healed and Kesler, 28, is back on skates. On Saturday, he joined some of his teammates for an optional practice. ?It?s obviously the next step,? he said. ?It felt good to be out there again. Now it?s just a matter of getting my wind back and for me to feel comfortable. Obviously you want to play tonight but that?s not realistic. I?m itching to play, I?m itching big time. It?s been a tough year for me but everything happens for a reason.?

Above the 49: Kesler return makes Canucks a contender
April 10, 2013

Vancouver, BC ?
The Vancouver Canucks might not have made a huge splash during last week's NHL trade deadline, but the return of Ryan Kesler to their lineup on Monday is enough to elevate them back to top contender status.

The addition of Kesler, especially if he can stay relatively healthy down the stretch, makes the Canucks arguably the deepest team at the center ice position in the Western Conference, ahead of even this season's powerhouse clubs in the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks.

Including his comeback game on Monday against the Phoenix Coyotes, Kesler has seen action in just eight contests this season. He missed the first 12 games of this shortened campaign while recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and, following a short-lived return to the lineup, sat out another 19 games after breaking his right foot.

Ryan Kesler can't steer Canucks back into series
By CBC Sports
Posted: Saturday, May 4, 2013
By Jim Morris, special to CBC Sports

VANCOUVER -- All night, Ryan Kesler hustled and hit and tried to be the difference maker.

Later, in the quiet Vancouver Canucks dressing room, Kesler looked like a wrung-out rag. He was physically and mentally exhausted after the Canucks' crushing 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks.

The defeat leaves the Canucks trailing 2-0 in the best-of-seven NHL Western Conference quarter-final series. It also wasted the best performance of any Vancouver player not named Roberto Luongo this playoff.

Kesler scored twice, once on the power play. He led the team with five shots and six hits. He tried to grab the wheel and steer the Canucks back into the series. Instead, the team continues to weave dangerously toward the ditch.

"It's tough," Kesler said. "We deserved better.

"I thought we played exceptional tonight. We just didn't get it done. We have to regroup and focus on Game 3. Tomorrow we will learn from this and move on."

Healthy Ryan Kesler feeling good about upcoming Vancouver Canucks season

For the first time in forever — or least a couple of years — Ryan Kesler will be coming to training camp completely healthy.

In an interview from this week’s U.S. Olympic orientation camp in Arlington, Va., Kesler said he’s feeling great.

“Yeah, two years, finally healthy,” Kesler told the NHL Network. “It feels good to have a full summer of training under my belt for the first time in who knows how long. It’s positive, everything is positive on my front.”

That is good news for the Canucks, who need to see the Kesler of old if they are to be serious Stanley Cup contenders this season.

Kesler had a 41-goal, 73-point season and won the Frank J. Selke Trophy in helping lead the Canucks to the Stanley Cup finals in 2011. But his production has dropped off dramatically since then and he has battled a series of injuries.

In 2011-12, Kesler had 22 goals and 49 points. Kesler was recovering from two off-season surgeries last season and played just 17 regular-season games. He had four goals and 13 points.

Plenty of demand on healthy Canucks centre Ryan Kesler
By Cam Tucker

Darryl Dyck/The Canadian Press Vancouver Canucks' centre Ryan Kesler celebrates his goal against the Phoenix Coyotes during the first period of an NHL game at Rogers Arena on April 8.
In some cases, the NHL pre-season is a false indicator of what to expect when the puck drops for real, and wins and losses finally matter.

But not when it comes to Ryan Kesler and the role – and responsibilities – he’ll have with the Vancouver Canucks under John Tortorella’s tenure.

The plan Tortorella has for Kesler, the speedy second-line centre, is simple: he’s going to play and play a lot, so long as he is healthy enough to do so.

In his first pre-season game, Kesler played a whopping 25 minutes and 29 seconds, and was on pace for much more than that after the opening period.

It’s a sign of things to come.

“I’m going to demand a lot out of him,” said Tortorella on Sunday.

Kesler arrived to training camp completely healthy, which is something that can’t be said for each of the past two seasons.

Hip surgery following the Stanley Cup Final in 2011 and surgeries on his wrist and shoulder in the 2012 off-season delayed his much-needed inclusion into the lineup for weeks at a time.

The success of the Canucks this season hinges greatly on whether the 29-year-old Livonia, Mich., native remains in the lineup.

Canucks' Kesler excelling after shift to wing
Monday, 10.28.2013
By Kevin Woodley - NHL.com Correspondent

Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin blocking shots and killing penalties, John Tortorella's boldest move as new coach of the Vancouver Canucks involves moving Selke Trophy-winning center Ryan Kesler to the right wing.

It's a move Kesler, who won the Selke in 2011, bristled at in the past, but one that's hard to argue with given his current success.

After recording one goal and no assists in his first six games playing primarily as a center, Kesler scored six times and added three assists while moving to the wing during the Canucks' recently completed seven-game road trip. He finished the team's longest trip of the season with two goals against the St. Louis Blues, including the overtime winner, and has four goals and three assists during a four-game point streak.

It probably doesn't hurt that Kesler is playing on the Canucks' top line with the Sedin twins, or that Kesler trails only Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby in ice time among NHL forwards.

"It's easy to play with a couple guys like that," Kesler, who last played wing for an estimated 30 or 40 games alongside Mats Sundin in 2008-09, said of the Sedins. "They are obviously future Hall of Famers, and the way they play took a little while to get used to, but I am enjoying it."

Kesler fired 35 shots on goal during the seven-game road trip after hitting the net 19 times in his first six games -- and nine of those came during a 6-2 romp over the Edmonton Oilers in Vancouver's home opener. He averaged two shots in his other five games as a center, but is averaging five per game since playing more on right wing.

"I don't think it's much different," Kesler said. "When you play with a couple of guys that get you pucks so much and in good areas to shoot, it makes the game a lot easier. Playing with the twins, they definitely get me the puck and I just shoot more, that's the thing."

2014 Olympics Preview: 17 Memorable Goals in USA Hockey History (with video)

12. Ryan Kesler scores diving empty-net goal to ice U.S. victory over Canada in 2010 Olympics preliminary round

Preliminary-round games don’t often make headlines, but when the U.S. beat Canada 5-3 in the 2010 prelims it was big news. The Americans beat Canada in the Olympics for the first time since 1960 and this time it was on Canadian soil. It made the U.S. team a must-see attraction for Olympic TV viewers and signified American hockey was definitely alive and well.

In the closing minutes of the game, the U.S. was doing everything it could to hold off an onslaught from the very talented and desperate Canadian club. As time ticked down and Martin Brodeur pulled for an extra attacker, Zach Parise sent the puck softly down the ice, enough to get it out of harm’s way, but not enough for an icing.

Ryan Kesler stormed down the ice as Corey Perry chased the loose puck for Canada. Despite Perry having a step or two on Kesler, the American forward charged on. As Perry went to collect the puck, Kesler gave one last diving attempt to keep it away from Perry. Inadvertently or on purpose, you be the judge, Kesler knocked the puck into the gaping net sweeping at it while in a superman pose.

report in Canada that Kesler traded by Vancouver today to Anaheim Ducks, an interesting intra-Conference swap....

here we go:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...o-anaheim/article19369772/#dashboard/follows/

The first major domino of NHL entry-draft day dropped Friday, when the Vancouver Canucks completed the long-anticipated trade for Ryan Kesler.
In exchange for Kesler, the Ducks surrendered their own first-round choice, 24th overall, along with defenceman Luca Sbisa and forward Nick Bonino, according to sources. The Ducks had targeted a new No. 2 centre to play behind Ryan Getzlaf, after they determined not to bring back former Montreal Canadiens’ captain Saku Koivu.

The NHL unveiled its 2017 All Star Game rosters this morning with center Ryan Kesler and defenseman Cam Fowler being named to the Pacific Division squad.

Kesler has had a resurgent offensive year with 35 points (16g, 19a) in 42 games played while playing his usual shutdown defensive minutes, throwing himself squarely into the mid-season Selke Trophy discussion. This is Kesler’s second All Star Game with his career year of 2011 as a member of the Vancouver Canucks being the other nomination.

Fowler is also seeing an offensive resurgence, tallying his best offensive numbers since his breakout rookie campaign with 22 points (9g, 13a) in 42 games. He’s also been one of the few consistently reliable defensmen on the Ducks this season amid the team’s struggles on the back end.

The 2017 All Star Weekend will be held January 28th-29th in Los Angeles at Staples Center and will be broadcast live on NBC.
