A stress fracture has kept former Ohio State center Jessica Davenport out of the Liberty's lineup since the start of the WNBA season.

Jessica Davenport didn't miss a beat or a game in the four seasons she played for the Ohio State women's basketball team.
So being out the past three months because of a stress fracture in her left leg and missing the first 14 games of the New York Liberty's WNBA season counted as new experiences for the three-time All-American.
"This is my first major injury," Davenport said in a telephone interview from Los Angeles. "I twisted an ankle a couple of times in college. Other than that, I've been healthy."

Former Ohio State star added to Indiana roster
June 17, 2009 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Indiana Fever

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Fever has announced the free agent signing of third-year center Jessica Davenport. Davenport, a two-time Big Ten Conference Player of the Year from Ohio State and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft, replaces WNBA legend Yolanda Griffith on the Indiana roster.
Griffith, who sustained a season-ending Achilles' tendon tear against the Seattle Storm on June 9, underwent surgery in Indianapolis on June 16.

Waived by the Liberty in training camp this spring, Davenport becomes the first Ohio State graduate ever to don a Fever uniform, and she joins former Purdue star Katie Douglas as a second former Big Ten player of the year on the Fever roster. Davenport is no stranger to Conseco Fieldhouse, having led the Buckeyes to the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament in 2006 and 2007, and semifinal appearances in 2004 and 2005.

A member of the USA Basketball Senior Women's National Team and a two-time finalist for national college player of the year honors, Davenport was the Big Ten's freshman of the year in 2004. She was the league's player of the year as a sophomore and senior, prior to becoming the second overall selection in the 2007 WNBA Draft by San Antonio. She was part of a draft-day deal that sent longtime Liberty star Becky Hammon to San Antonio.

The 6-5 Davenport becomes the tallest player on the Fever roster. "We are excited to sign a player of Jess' caliber," said Fever Head Coach Lin Dunn. "She has great size and really improves our depth at the center position."

In two seasons with the Liberty, Davenport started 16 of the 47 games she played. She owns WNBA career averages of 5.1 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. She shot 45 percent from the floor and averaged nearly one blocked shot per game in two years with the Liberty. She owns a career high of 15 points, twice, and a career high of 10 rebounds, at Chicago in 2008.

Fever's Davenport playing bigger role

Indiana Fever coach Lin Dunn says Jessica Davenport could become one of the top five centers in the WNBA.

A little more than three years ago, the New York Liberty would have agreed. To acquire the rights to Davenport, the No. 2 overall pick of the 2007 draft, the Liberty traded star guard Becky Hammon to the San Antonio Silver Stars.

But after two disappointing summers in New York, the Liberty released Davenport in June 2009, a few days before her 24th birthday. She had no job and an uncertain future.

Now, the 6-5 left-hander looms big, literally and figuratively, in the Fever's future. Davenport will try to add to her resume in tonight's nationally televised game against the Los Angeles Sparks. A victory would allow the Fever (13-7) to take sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference.

Davenport is a Midwesterner born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. She played college basketball at Ohio State, where she became the Big Ten's first three-time Player of the Year.

Giant Potential

Jessica Davenport grows as Fever struggle.

by Josh Flynn

The Indiana Fever are a head scratching mystery this season. There are nights when the team is unstoppable. There are nights when they fumble about the basketball court and look nothing like the Eastern Conference champions. They are inconsistent. For a short stretch the Fever rode a five game win streak back to the top of the East. A three game losing streak has dropped them back to third place.

If there has been one consistent spot for the team it?s been 6?5 reserve center Jessica Davenport. She?s upped her averages during the stretch, putting in 8.8 points, grabbing 4.4 boards, and adding nearly one block, assist and steal per game. In a recent loss to Atlanta she pulled down a career high 12 rebounds.

She?s physically imposing on the court, but gentle in manner off. She?s packed with championship potential?and some nights it surfaces like the 12 caroms against Atlanta, the 18 points in 18 minutes against Phoenix in Game 5 of the 2009 WNBA Finals?but other nights she seems unable to tap into the full extent of that potential.

Davenport raises fierceness on the court
By Tom Rietmann | June 15, 2011

Jessica Davenport's manner away from basketball is low key and easygoing. But Davenport's style on the court might best be described as tigerish.

?She has a quiet demeanor,? Indiana Fever assistant coach Gary Kloppenburg said, ?but she has a fierce competitive nature when she gets on the floor.?

Never was that more evident than in the Fever's past two games.

Tuesday night, in Indiana's 82-74 victory over visiting Tulsa, Davenport took over the game when her team needed her most. She roared back from a slow start and scored nine points, blocked two shots and came up with a steal in the final 4 minutes, 20 seconds. The Fever broke open a close game, moving to 3-1 ahead of a three-game, cross-country trip.

?I was pretty upset with myself,? Davenport said afterward. ?I think I air-balled a layup, which is terrible. My teammates still wanted to get me the ball, and they still have confidence in what I can do down low (around the basket).?

That confidence in Davenport prevailed one game earlier, too. In Indiana's 86-80 comeback victory over the New York Liberty on Saturday night, Davenport answered the call off the bench with nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Indiana, which outscored the home team 24-10 in the fourth quarter Saturday, captured a victory it desperately wanted after losing to the Liberty at Conseco Fieldhouse on Friday night.

?(Davenport) is really playing aggressively now, rebounding and blocking shots,? said Kloppenburg, who works with the Fever's big players. ?She really did a lot of good things in the New York game for us to win. She's getting better and better every day.?

Daily improvement is Davenport's main goal. She took that approach in college at Ohio State, where she became the Big Ten's first three-time Player of the Year and the only one to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots. And she has tried to be that way in four-plus seasons as a professional.

?I think each year (with Indiana), I've gotten more confident and more attuned to what needs to be done,? Davenport said after a Fever practice earlier this week.

Jessica Davenport scores 19 as Fever snap losing streak
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jessica Davenport scored 19 points to lead the Indiana Fever to an 84-70 victory over the Chicago Sky on Saturday night.

Katie Douglas had 15 points, Briann January added 14 and Tamika Catchings 12 to help Indiana (5-3) snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 21-5 all-time against the Sky.

"Today we just talked about taking every single quarter," Catchings said. "Ten-minute quarters. Ten minute games like we do in practice. ... Our bench was huge and (Jessica Davenport) had an amazing game tonight going against Sylvia (Fowles)."

Catchings shot 3 of 12 from the field, but made 6 of 8 from the line to pass Lisa Leslie atop the WNBA's career free throws made list with 1,478.

Davenport broke her own franchise record for field goals made without a miss, going 9 of 9, and also made her only free-throw attempt. She was previously 8 of 8 against Connecticut on June 11, 2010.

"Just wanted to be aggressive," Davenport said about guarding Fowles. "Just try to crowd her and make it difficult. You're not going to be able to completely stop her because she's a great player. But we just wanted to make it as difficult for her as possible."

2012 Ohio State Hall of Fame....

Jessica Davenport
Women?s Basketball, 2004-07
Ohio State rode the coattails of Jessica Davenport back to the top of the Big Ten Conference and into national prominence during her four years as a Buckeye. The only three-time Big Ten Player of the Year at the time, Davenport helped the Buckeyes to a 108-22 record (.831) from 2004-07. Ohio State?s first three-time All-American captained the Buckeyes to three-consecutive conference championships.

A consumer affairs graduate, Davenport ended her career with 48 career double-doubles and Ohio State?s only pair of triple-doubles in points, rebounds and blocked shots. Davenport amassed 2,303 career points, which currently ranks third all-time on the Ohio State all-time list. Davenport also pulled down 1,094 rebounds to rank in the top 3. In 2007, Davenport became the first player in Big Ten history to record 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 300 blocked shots in a career.

Davenport capped her career in grand fashion in 2007. She not only garnered her third conference player of the year award and third All-America honor, but etched her name in both the Big Ten and Ohio State record books while leading the Buckeyes to a 28-4 overall mark and fourth NCAA tournament bid in as many seasons. She topped the conference in scoring at 20 points per game and ranked second in the league in rebounds (9.6) and field goal percentage (.597). At the conclusion of the regular season, Ohio State was 26-2, the best regular campaign in Ohio State annals.

Just weeks after completing her career as the most decorated Buckeye in program history, Davenport was selected No. 2 overall in the 2007 WNBA Draft. Davenport helped the New York Liberty reach the 2007 WNBA playoffs and is currently a member of the Indiana Fever.

Davenport also attacked her duties in the classroom. She was a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree en route to earning her bachelor?s degree in March 2007.

Jessica Davenport out for season
Updated: June 21, 2013
Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- The injury-depleted Indiana Fever received more bad news Friday when center Jessica Davenport was lost for the season.

Davenport has not played this season because of a stress fracture in her lower left leg. She will have season-ending surgery before the end of June.

The defending WNBA champions have started 1-5 after losing Davenport, guard Katie Douglas with a bulging disc in her lower back, guard Erin Phillips with a torn right meniscus and guard Jeanette Pohlen with a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. Those four players combined for 60 starts during the regular season and playoffs in Indiana's title-winning season.
