There's a pretty interesting story about Greg in the February 27th issue of ESPN Magazine. Talks about his relationship with Jack Keefer, how he tried to keep his game 'quiet' during his junior year because of all of the pressure and how he improved in his senior year, how he wanted to follow Conley to Ohio State despite his family's financial situation, and how Lawrence North didn't want to exploit him like St. Vincent-St. Mary did to LeBron.

What a class act he is.

I think in about 5-10 years that high school jersey he is wearing is going to be sold as a retro type jersey as they have done with other players in the NBA now.

Oden is going to be very special and is a once in a blue moon type talent. Anyway we could suit him up for the tourney run this year to play alongside Dials down low.:tongue2:

Colangelo finalizing U.S. roster

HOUSTON - Jerry Colangelo took in a preview this weekend of what Las Vegas will look like.

Not the 2007 All-Star Game in Las Vegas, but the USA Basketball camp this summer to prepare for the World Championship in Japan.

Colangelo, the senior men's national team executive director, watched a good chunk of his USA team and its competition, but he will not make a series of staggered announcements of groups of players starting this week, as originally planned.

Colangelo will announce the entire group around March 1 at a news conference in Phoenix, in coordination with news conferences around the nation with other players and USA Basketball personnel providing greater exposure. A group of 22 NBA players already have or will soon have USA Basketball contracts coming their way in the mail.

Colangelo also once planned to have an entire "select" team of young potential USA Basketball players join them. Because of undesirable logistics of a camp with more than 30 players, that "select" group will now be limited to Duke's J.J. Redick, Gonzaga's Adam Morrison and Ohio State-bound high school senior Greg Oden.

Colangelo has 28 commitments for 22 spots and one 13-time All-Star weighing his decision - Miami's Shaquille O'Neal.

"Shaq saw me in the elevator and said, 'I'll call you in a week or two,' " Colangelo said. "I said, 'Shaq, there's always a spot for you.' "

Indirectly, Colangelo said he was told that Detroit's Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince will pass because of their expectations that the Pistons will be playing into June.

Colangelo met this weekend with Boston's Paul Pierce and San Antonio's Bruce Bowen, both of whom have expressed desire to be included. He also visited with Orlando's Dwight Howard.

Colangelo was not necessarily referring to those players specifically when he said: "I want to be very sensitive to how they're advised (if they are not among the 22 picks). Because if they are not involved in this go-around, that doesn't mean they will not be involved in consideration moving forward."

Colangelo said the idea of bringing the 2009 NBA All-Star Game to Phoenix was not discussed this weekend in Houston. The league is still trying to solidify plans for 2008, when it is hoped that the game will be staged in New Orleans.

Paris has been brought up in the past for 2009, but Colangelo said that seems impractical. He has been pushing the idea of the 2009 game in Phoenix for two years.

"I'm not sure when we (as a league) will start talking about it," said Colangelo, Suns CEO and chairman. "As far as downtown, we could be ready in '09 because the major hotels and the light rail would be completed."if(ScriptsLoaded) stInit();

Oden, Conley on All-America

Lawrence North seniors Greg Oden and Mike Conley have been named to the McDonald's All-America high school boys basketball team.

The official announcement is expected today.

The McDonald's All-American game, which is limited to high school seniors, will be held March 29 in San Diego, four days after the Indiana High School Athletic Association State Finals.

Oden, the top-ranked player in the senior class, is the reigning national high school Player of the Year.

He is averaging 23.8 points and 11.1 rebounds this season. The 7-foot center is shooting 73 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line.

Conley, among the nation's top-ranked point guards, is averaging 18 points, 4.6 assists and 3.5 steals per game.

The Ohio State-bound duo has led Lawrence North to the past two Class 4A state championships. This year, the Wildcats (21-0) are ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and No. 1 in the nation by Sports Illustrated.

The article was in a series to find the "future" of basketball. He was the American candidate (there were others from different countries). Pretty good write-up about him. A few points of interest...
- I was pleasantly surprised to read that he's going for his 4th consecutive 4.0 semester.
- It was also good to read how much more relaxed he's been this year. I don't think any of us can imagine the intense scrutiny he's been under over the past two years and it's good to see that has backed off a bit lately.
- Most amazing part was that coach Keefer almost benched him last year because he wouldn't shoot the ball enough.

The article closed with this promising line: "Oden didn't move. He kept signing and posing, making it clear that no one is going to rush Greg Oden. He'll leave when he's ready."

I haven't been on here in a while -- last time was as Greg announced his intention to go to OSU. I saw a couple of posts about this article and wanted to respond.

For those that remember, people I am close to know Greg on a very personal level. His (Greg's) reaction to the story was much different than the posts on here. He felt that he and his family were portrayed in a very bad and dishonest light. He said the reporter talked to him about a year ago and was just now putting out the story -- many things in the story were purely fabricated. For example:

He did not go through a +/- list of NBA vs. OSU with his AD, much less list getting into clubs at 18 as a positive for OSU -- not really a priority for a person as private as Greg.

The article said he went to school hungry many times and they wondered if he was getting enough to eat at home -- he feklt this a direct slap to his mom and said it is completely false.

There were others as well -- overall he was very disappointed with how the article came out. just wanted to add that input, and to say he is VERY excited to get to OSU!

So you're saying that ESPN the Magazine had a story with inaccuracies about a student-athlete that will soon be a Buckeye?

For some reason I believe you.
