Byron Mullens? Struggles go Hand-in-Hand with Charlotte Bobcats?
by Cody Williams

Byron-Mullens-Blake-Griffin.jpg

To say the Charlotte Bobcats are, as a team, in a bad place right now, would be a grave understatement. Their loss to the Golden State Warriors on Friday night was their 14th straight loss.

As the team is struggling to find their niche in the NBA right now, as well as struggling to win a game, one of the key individuals that has been detrimental to the Bobcats has continued to be Byron Mullens.

Charlotte?s seven-foot center has been noted for his quick-trigger and for making the occasional knuckleheaded play. However, his last five games have been notably bad.

As the Bobcats starting center, something that can?t be lost in this, Mullens is averaging, in 31.2 minutes per game, 8.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. That?s not a terrible stat-line. It?s not until you see that he is shooting the ball an average of 11 times per game and is only converting on 27.3 percent of those attempts.

Mullens? over-confidence with his shot has always been a minor issue for Charlotte. Now, though, it?s getting to the point that their center is shooting them out of games.

Byron Mullens Suffered a Severe Left Ankle Sprain

The Charlotte Bobcats, owners of a 15-game losing streak, lost big man Byron Mullens who went down in a heap after severely spraining his left ankle. Per the Charlotte Observer: ?Near the conclusion of the Bobcats? 110-88 blowout loss to the Denver Nuggets, Charlotte big man Byron Mullens got his feet tangled with other players? and took a hard fall. An X-ray to detect a fracture was negative, but Mullens appears to have a severe sprain of his left ankle. ?From my eyes it?s not good,? said Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap. Mullens wasn?t available for comment following the game, but he had to be carried off the court by teammates, seemingly in heavy pain. He returned to the locker room, following the X-ray, on crutches, his ankle wrapped so heavily he could have been a mummy. Mullens has started 25 of the Bobcats? 26 games this season. He is their leading rebounder at 7.6 per game on a team with severe rebounding concerns. And he?s fifth in scoring at 11.5 per game.?

Charlotte Bobcats' Byron Mullens catches a break on ankle
By Rick Bonnell

The fear and panic struck Charlotte Bobcats power forward Byron Mullens as soon as he hit the floor in Denver?s Pepsi Center late in his team?s loss Dec. 22.

The way his left ankle turned so acutely, combined with the sudden, piercing pain, had to mean a fracture.

?When I went down I told them it was broken. I looked down at my leg and it was jammed to the side,? Mullens said in his first extended comments since the injury. ?Later I looked at (the fall) on TV and it looked bad then, too.?

It became even scarier after teammates carried him off the floor to an examination room. His ankle quickly swelled to several times its normal size.

?I didn?t really see it until I got on the X-ray table. When I saw it, I kind of freaked out ? I?d never seen a sprained ankle look like that,? Mullens recalled.

?I absolutely thought it was broken.?

Turns out he was wrong. It was a severe sprain. Two weeks later he?s out of the protective boot that keeps the joint in proper alignment to promote healing. Now he?s down to a brace and Mullens can walk without a limp, as he did Friday when he watched his teammates? lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers Friday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Byron Mullens (ankle) has been cleared to start running on a zero-gravity machine and do some shooting.
Mullens "terrible" and "severe" ankle injury has already kept him out for more than three weeks. The Bobcats still don't know when he'll be back, but the increased activity is certainly a positive sign. Once all the way back to 100 percent, the versatile 7-footer figures to re-take the starting power forward job from Hakim Warrick. Jan 15

Mullens hopesto return during 5-game road trip
By Rick Bonnell
[email protected]
Posted: Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013

Power forward Byron Mullens hopes to be playing again during the Charlotte Bobcats? upcoming five-game road trip.

Mullens, the Bobcats? leading rebounder, has been out nearly a month with a severely sprained left ankle. He worked out with the team Thursday, and while he hasn?t been cleared to fully practice, Mullens thinks he?s getting close to a return.

?I?m going on this whole road trip. It?s 12 days. I might come back on the road. I might be able (play) to the way it feels today,?? Mullens said.

The Bobcats play in Chicago Monday, the first of five consecutive road games.

Mullens did some agility drills ? it looked like he was playing hopscotch ? to restore what he called the ?muscle memory?? in his injured ankle. He also did some sprints and shooting, then walked through some plays.

?(Based on) today, I felt like I could play on Saturday (at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves), but I know I can?t,?? Mullens said. ?Just running around at 10 percent is not like game speed and I?m definitely not in game shape. Not after being out for a month.??

Mullens, averaging 11.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, has been missed. Since his injury the Bobcats have gone 3-12. In his absence the scoring burden has fallen even more on the guards.

Wednesday the Bobcats lost their 16th straight home game (to the Atlanta Hawks) and Charlotte?s four power forwards and centers combined to shoot 3 of 17 from the field.

?It?s tough not to be out there, especially when we?re losing games by six or seven points,?? Mullens said. ?In my head I?m thinking, ?Well, I can at least get seven or eight points.? ??

Mullens said he?s essentially been cleared for whatever activity doesn?t cause pain. He said the swelling is gone and pain is minimal, but he needs to work the ankle to break up scar tissue.

Mullens? sprain, late in a loss Dec. 22 in Denver, was so severe there was initial concern he had fractured his left ankle.

?I jacked it up pretty bad,?? Mullens said of the injury. ?I probably tore everything you could tear without breaking it.

Byron Mullens to Return for Charlotte Bobcats Against Miami Heat
by Cody Williams

The Charlotte Bobcats will regain some depth in their frontcourt on Monday as Byron Mullens announced via Twitter that he will be back for the team?s road-contest against the Miami Heat.

Mullens? return has been speculated recently, but the exact date was still uncertain until this afternoon.

The seven-footer?s return would have signified an entirely healthy Bobcats roster, had it not been for the injury that Michael Kidd-Gilchrist suffered on Saturday against the Houston Rockets. Kidd-Gilchrist was diagnosed with a concussion and is now back with the team.

With Mullens back in the lineup, Charlotte will get some much needed offense out of their frontcourt. Bismack Biyombo and company have been wildly inconsistent with their scoring output in Mullens? absence.

Mullens' good game for Bobcats turns bad at end
By Rick Bonnell - [email protected]

MIAMI -- Charlotte Bobcats forward Byron Mullens did a lot more in his first game back than anyone expected: Twenty-eight minutes, 12 points, and nine rebounds.

He did at least one more thing that he wished he hadn?t.

?Can?t do that,? Mullens said of a turnover under the Miami Heat basket that led directly to a Chris Bosh dunk in Miami?s 99-94 victory at American Airlines Arena.

Charlotte Bobcats? Byron Mullens racks up minutes testing ankle
By Rick Bonnell

When you?re a 7-footer and reasonably athletic, jumping becomes a given.

Not so much Monday for Charlotte Bobcats power forward Byron Mullens. It was the first time he played in six weeks, following a severe ankle sprain. So things he took for granted now test him.

?I went up (on a put-back) and barely got it over the rim. But it will get there.?? Mullens said after a 99-94 loss to the Miami Heat Monday.

The Heat game amounted to Mullens? shakedown cruise. He tested what he can and can?t do now that he is well enough to play again. He?s the Bobcats? leading rebounder this season, and that still showed ? he had nine boards against the Heat. He can also stretch defenses with his shooting. He made his first two jumpers, but finished only 5-of-14 from the field.

?I made those first two and said, ?OK!? And then I kind of faded,?? Mullens said.

Byron Mullens kept his foot on the gas pedal in the Bobcats' 100-93 loss to the Lakers on Friday, scoring 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting (1-of-4 3PTs, 3-of-3 FTs) with 12 rebounds, one steal, and one block in 39 minutes.
Give it to Charlotte, whatever they did rehabbing Mullens has allowed him to come out firing right out of the gate. He was aggressive tonight but did get tired late, which is to be expected of a player coming off injury like he did.

Byron Mullens scored 25 points with 18 boards, four assists and four 3-pointers in 43 minutes during Monday's win over the Celtics.
He shot 10-of-16 from the field and the Celtics had no answer for him. Mullens scored the team's first 10 points and never really slowed down. His last five games have been productive with averages of 17.6 points, 9.8 boards and 2.0 triples in 33.2 minutes. The 18 boards tonight were a career high
