When leading by six points, late in a game, faced with a third-and-27 at your own 21, with a brand new quarterback under center, and with one of the best punters in America on your sideline, you -- all together now -- run the ball and punt!
Ole Miss did not do either. Ole Miss asked the brand new quarterback to chunk it deep. The quarterback was hit by a blitzing linebacker. The quarterback fumbled the ball away. The blitzing linebacker recovered in the end zone and the Ole Miss Rebels lost to BYU, 14-13.
(Offensive Coordinator David) Lee said he was trying to "get us a little bit out of a hole." So he fired up a steam shovel and dug a much deeper one.
"I trusted Stoudt, I trusted the protection," he said.
Just once, don't you wish a coach would say, "You know, that one was all on me?"
"We had a max protection and the tight end just got beat," said Nutt, and doesn't that quote make you want to scream? The tight end didn't call that ridiculous play. The tight end didn't make the other questionable call, either, the one with 3:28 left.
Ole Miss had it fourth-and-10 on its own 46, with two timeouts to burn. So you punt the ball away, right? You pin BYU deep, get the ball back and take one more shot.
"I just felt like time was a factor," Nutt said. "Punting didn't cross my mind at the time."
The Rebels ordered up a screen -- a screen! -- that went for no gain.
