Rod Marinelli has agreed to a four-year contract to become the Detroit Lions’ next coach, sources said last night.

Lions senior vice president of communications Bill Keenist said he could not confirm or deny the hiring of Marinelli, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ assistant head coach and defensive line coach. But the Lions have called a news conference for this morning.

Marinelli, 56, has never been an NFL coordinator, let alone a head coach. But that’s partly because the Buccaneers denied him permission to explore opportunities as a defensive coordinator on four occasions. He is respected by other coaches and known for his ability to teach and inspire.

Marinelli interviewed for Oakland’s headcoaching job Monday. He arrived Tuesday night in Detroit for his second interview with the Lions. He met yesterday with owner William Clay Ford and was scheduled to leave in the afternoon, but the Lions asked him to stay another day.

He agreed to stay in town. They soon offered him the job, and he reportedly accepted.
The Lions told former New Orleans coach Jim Haslett on Tuesday night they would arrange to fly him to Detroit yesterday for a second interview. But Marinelli made them change their plans. By 6:30 p.m., Haslett was still home in Louisiana and hadn’t heard from the Lions.

This bum has never even been a coordinator and gets a head job while people like Marvin Lewis and Dungy and Lovie Smith have to beg for years to get a job. Disgraceful.
yet another pathetic attempt to create non-existant racism by tibor. I thought dungy was a scrub who should not be a coach? or does that not fit your argument anymore?

Nice idiotic response. Dungy is not a great coach. But he was a great coordinator who deserved a chance long before he got one. So, the fact that he is now not a great coach justifies GMs overlooking him because he was black? Uh, sure...

Yeah, there is no racism in the NFL. Silly me. :roll1:

lol, it really is remarkable how much you can make up on your own. you were the one who described dungy as a scrub, not me... I think he's excellent. And nowhere did I suggest there is not racism in the nfl; which black coordinators have been a good fit in detroit? Given your obsession with fictional drama, your claim about this supposed racism should be no surprise.
