Box Score
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Ohio State had not won the opening game of a Big Ten series this season, but that changed Saturday at Beaver Field as the Buckeyes jumped out to a 10-0 lead and went on to claim a 11-2 victory. Ohio State has now won five games in a row and seven of its last eight to improve to 25-15 overall and 8-10 in the Big Ten.
All nine starters had at least one hit as the Buckeyes scored three in the first, sixth in the fourth before adding one in the sixth and one in the ninth to allow starting pitcher Dan DeLucia (So., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) to pitch his first career complete game at Ohio State.
Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) was 3-for-3 and walked three times to reach base in all six of his plate appearances. The school record for consecutive times reaching base is 13 by John Prosenjak in 1934. Designated hitter Adam Scheider (So., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) was the only other Buckeyes with multiple hits against the Nittany Lions. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored twice.
Ohio State took its first lead in the opening game of a Big Ten series this season by scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Rabin got things started when he singled through the left side with one out. Steve Caravati followed with a walk before Schneider singled to right to score Rabin and when the ball was misplayed by right fielder Matt Lewis, Caravati was able to score and Schneider went to second. Schneider scored on a single up the middle by Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South).
The Buckeyes broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on only two hits to take a 9-0 lead. PSU starter Alan Stidfole walked five batters in the game before giving way to reliever Gary Amato. Stidfole opened the inning with his seventh strikeout of the game, but walked Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) before he took second on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling). Two more walks loaded the bases for Schneider, who delivered an infield single to score Fryer.
Two more walks turned the scoring carousel twice more before Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) delivered a bases-clearing double over the centerfielder's head. All six runs scored with two out.
Ohio State was able to add a run in the sixth inning to take a 10-0 lead. Amato began the inning with a strikeout of Bourquin before Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) singled through the left side. He was erased at second on a fielder's choice by Stephen before Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) doubled to left to score Stephen from first.
Penn State avoided its first shutout of the season with one run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Michael Milliron led off the inning with a single up the middle and then went to second on a single through the left side by Scott Gummo. Zoeller could not come up with a Matt Lewis double-play grounder to second and allowed the Nittany Lions to load the bases. Aaron Greenfield scored Milliron with a sacrifice fly to center to make the score 10-1.
The Buckeyes got the run back in the top of the ninth when Fryer scored on a single to left by Rabin. Fryer delivered a two-out single to center to get on base before singles by Angle and Rabin. Penn State led off the bottom of the inning with a double by catcher Mark Wojtowicz and then he scored on a single up the middle by Jim Leitgeb for Penn State's final run of the game.
DeLucia went the distance in the nine-inning contest, allowing the two runs (one earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out two to improve to 3-4 on the season. Stidfole got the loss to fall to 5-4 on the year. He pitched 3.2 innings and allowed nine runs on just five hits and seven walks. He struck out seven as Penn State fell to 24-18 overall and 10-11 in the Big Ten.
Ohio State and Penn State will play a doubleheader Sunday at 1:05 p.m. before concluding the series Monday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org, while both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast on NPR 820 (WOSU-AM).

went 4-for-5 with

Buckeye victory.
May 8, 2005
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Ohio State fought back from a four-run deficit and took the lead in the fifth on a three-run double by Steve Caravati and then added three more runs to beat Penn State 13-10 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Beaver Field.
Trailing by two runs in the fifth inning, Caravati, a senior from Dover, Ohio (Dover), put the Buckeyes on top 10-9 with the second of his three extra-base hits, a double. Stephen led off the inning with a single through the left side and went to second on a shot up the middle by Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) before a walk to Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) loaded the bases for Caravati.
With one out in the sixth, Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) cleared the fence in left-center field with his fifth home run of the season a solo shot that extended Buckeye lead to two runs. Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) added a second run in the inning when he knocked in Jedidiah Stephen (Jr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah), who had singled to right-center after Zoeller's long ball. Penn State added a run in the bottom of the inning to pull within a 12-10 score, but Ronnie Bourquin (So., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) drove in Schritzinger for the 13th OSU run of the game.
Caravati went on to finish 4-for-5 with four RBI thanks to a single, two doubles and a triple. The Buckeyes belted out 17 hits, compared to 14 by the Nittany Lions. Ohio State scored in every inning, except the fourth inning, when neither team crossed the plate.
Ohio State scored a pair of runs to lead off the top of the first thanks to back-to-back doubles by Angle and Rabin. Rabin drove in Angle with a shot to the gap in right-center field and then went to third on a error on shortstop Michael Milliron off a grounder by Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover). Rabin scored when Adam Schneider (So., Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) grounded into a double play.
Penn State came back in the bottom of the first to score five runs, the final three of which came from a double to right by Jim Leitgeb. The Buckeyes tied the game in the top of the second thanks to two doubles and two triples. Farinacci got things started with a one-out double to right-center field and then Eric Fryer (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) drove him in with his first career triple before the second strikeout of the inning by PSU starter Craig Clark. Rabin followed with a double to bring in Fryer and then he scored on a triple by Caravati to even the score 5-5. For Caravati, it was his third triple of the season and the 12th of his career.
The Nittany Lions scored four times in the bottom of the second to take a four-run lead, 9-5. Matt Lewis drove in the first run with a double to left and then Jim Leitgeb delivered his fourth RBI of the day, to go with his three-run double in the first, with his second double. Brian Ernst singled to center to score two more. OSU starter Cory Luebke (Fr., Maria Stein, Ohio/Marion Local) lasted only 1.2 innings and gave up nine runs (five earned) on nine hits.
The Buckeyes closed the gap to 9-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Bourquin led off with a single to center and then when it was misplayed by Ernst, the PSU centerfielder, he took second. Zoeller was hit before Farinacci delivered Bourquin with a shot to right and then Fryer sacrificed himself with a fly out to score Zoeller.
Luebke did not factor into the decision, but was backed up by an outstanding effort by reliever Brett Hatcher (Sr., Bellefontaine, Ohio/Bellefontaine). Hatcher allowed only one run on four hits in 4.1 innings. He struck out three of the 18 batters he faced. Rory Meister (Fr., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) came on to pick up his third save in his third straight Big Ten appearance. Clark took the loss for Penn State to fall to 3-3 on the year. He allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.
Ohio State won its fourth straight Big Ten game to move within one game of .500 in league play at 9-10 and climbed into the conference tournament playoff picture with the Michigan loss to Purdue in the first game of their doubleheader. Pending the remainder of the Sunday slate, the Buckeyes are in fifth place, but still need one more victory this weekend to remain in the Top 6 of the standings.
Ohio State and Penn State will finish the doubleheader today before concluding the series Monday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org.

game of the year.
May 8, 2005
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Ohio State scored 14 runs in the first inning and erupted for 33 hits in the game, including nine hits for extra bases, to beat Penn State 29-2 to take both ends of a Sunday doubleheader and clinch the four-game series with its third win this weekend. The series concludes Monday with a single game at 1:05 p.m.
The Buckeyes sent 14 batters to the plate before the first out could be recorded and every runner scored as the team batted around twice in the opening frame. Ohio State had 12 hits and benefited from four Penn State errors. The Nittany Lions went on to commit six in the game, while the Buckeyes defended perfectly.
Four runs crossed in the second and five runs scored in each of the third and fourth innings and the final run scored in the sixth. Penn State scored its runs in the fourth and seventh and finished the game with nine hits.
Ohio State used 16 players on offense and all but two batted in at least one run and all but two starters left the game entering the fourth inning. Cody Caughenbaugh (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Licking Valley) batted in four runs in a 2-for-4 effort that yielded his second home run of the year, a three-run blast to right in the third inning. Paul Farinacci (Sr., Westlake Village, Calif./Agoura) was 2-for-3 and added four RBI.
Mike Madsen (Sr., Canfield, Ohio/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) was able to ride the distance to his second complete game of the year. He allowed the two Nittany Lion runs on nine hits and struck out three with one walk. Penn State used six pitchers in the game, though it was starter Steve Cline, who got the loss. He faced 10 batters in the first and did not record an out while allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on seven hits and a walk to fall to 3-4 on the year. For Madsen, it was his team-best fifth victory of the year and was the 22nd victory of his career.
The Buckeyes, who stranded nine runners on base, had nine extra-base hits in the game, including eight doubles. Farinacci had two doubles. Matt Angle (Fr., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) and Jason Zoeller (So., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) were the only defensive players to start and finish the game. Angle was 3-for-7 and scored four times, while Zoeller was 3-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored.
So far, in the three-game set, co-captain Mike Rabin (Sr., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota East) leads the team in going 8-for-10. He has three doubles, has driven in four runs and has scored eighth runs. He has a slugging percentage of 1.100 and an on-base percentage of .857. He has yet to strike out and has reached base by four walks. Rabin has reached base in 12 out of 14 trips to the plate. Fellow co-captain Steve Caravati (Sr., Dover, Ohio/Dover) is batting .600 (6-for-10) in the series with three doubles and a triple and five RBI. He also has a slugging percentage of 1.100 and an on-base percentage of .667.
The Buckeyes have now won seven games in a row and nine of their last 10. In the Big Ten, the team has won its last six and seven of its last nine games to climb out of the conference cellar as recently as April 29 when Indiana opened with a 10-1 win. Now the Buckeyes are in fifth place in the league and are poised to make the Big Ten tournament, an event the team has missed only once in head coach Bob Todd's previous 17 years in Columbus.
Ohio State (27-17 overall and 10-10 in the Big Ten) and Penn State (24-20, 10-13) will conclude the series Monday with a single game at 1:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Internet at www.wosu.org.
