Buckeyes Leaving Early

Out of those four, here's where I'd see them in the draft should they declare themselves eligible:

Hawk - Late 1st, early 2nd round
Holmes - Early/mid 2nd round
Salley - 5th or 6th round
Schlegel - 6th or 7th round

The only one I see whose early departure would be financially similar as if he remained through his senior year is Hawk. A.J. will probably gain only 10 draft positions by staying his senior year...but that could still prove to be a big chunk of change within the 1st round. Holmes could gain as as much as 20-30 positions, working his way into the mid/late 1st round, with a great senior year. Both Salley and Schlegel should be able to gain a full round by staying, barring injury.
Won't holmes only be a Jr?

Totally agree with this assessment. I also think we will have 3 linebackers drafted next season all within the first 5 rounds.

Maybe 4....

Not sure about D'Andrea...he has the potential, but he's never had a full season to prove it. Hopefully he gets over his injury and has a great senior season. Then again, if he does, that reduces the playing time of Schlegel which will hurt Schlegel's draft chances.

Doesnt D'Andrea have two more years to go? I can't see anyone leaving early either....they have too much comming back and I think some of these guys not only want to improve their draft status but take a shot at the NC next year!
No, He's a Junior. The only way that he stays for two more years is if he hasn't recovered well enough from his injury, and they decide to redshirt him. Actually that's what I would like to see happen. Give him the full recovery time, and let him be full speed for an entire season in '06.

I just realized the two-deep at Linebacker right now. D'Andrea (when healthy), Freeman (wonderful athlete), and Kerr (when not in the doghouse). That threesome could start at over 70% of DI colleges next season! They are going to be on our bench! Wow!

Many on the board have said that he played in too many games to get an extra year, but if I remember correctly, JT made a comment that he was confident Mike D would get an extra year. Don't know what will happen, but it doesn't sound so black and white.

One of Ohio State's biggest botches defensively is the decision not to redshirt MDA. He contributed mildly on special teams as a freshman, a position that many others could have filled. I wish that they would have given the kid an extra year in the system, it basically took him a year to learn the defense, wheras Hawk picked it up rather quickly. I still am a firm believer that MDA is playing out of position, and he shoud be a rush end, that is his natural position in my opinion. He makes his biggest contribution when he is blitzing, so why not make him an every play blitzer? You could also use him in zone blitz schemes and drop him into flat coverage, or short 1/3.

Extra year? He's a true junior. He doesn't need an extra year, just a regular old redshirt. Every player gets the opportunity of having five years of eligibility.

JT has said there is a precedent for players to get a medical redshirt for a year that they played some, if they missed substantial time over consecutive seasons. D'Andrea missed basically an entire season between 2003-04, so he could very likely get another year to give him a full 4 playing years at OSU. But JT said they (med staff & NCAA) don't make that decision until the end of next year...
