Buckeyes Leaving Early

flybuckeye

All-American
Per Dispatch, Holmes, Hawk, Salley, and Schlegel have all petitioned the NFL advisory committee about there draft status for coming out early. We all know that Hawk and Holmes said they're coming back, but the other two haven't addressed it publicly.

Just my 2 cents BUT....

I always was under the impression that all "College Seniors to be" Asked what their draft status is / would be.....

I remember seeing a list of last years seniors to be and there were Hundreds of names on it... But only a small portion of them went through with it.....

This is pretty standard, and nothing to worry about. The only guy that makes me wonder a bit is Schlegel because he is married, and transferred due to OSU's LB reputation and what will get him to the NFL. Kind of a looking out for the family situation. That being said, I think he will stay simply because his stock will go through the roof next season playing alongside one, potentially two, all americans. Not to mention I would expect that he would love a crack at a Big Ten/National title.

Hell if I was in their situation I would peek my head out and see what the NFL scouts have to say about me, that way I would know what to improve on the next season.

Nothing wrong with finding out where you stand. As to Salley and Schegel, they won't be high enough picks to warrant coming out. Salley still needs to work on tackling and coverage (he could be like Thomas Davis was this year, if he comes back) and Schegel needs to prove he can play a full year in the Big 10 at a high level. They both are potentially high picks eventually, but not yet.

The other reason they won't project high is position, obviously too.

Safeties are a dime a dozen... and what's Schlegel going to project as? A 3-4 ILB? Not exactly the top of the salary food chain either.

I'm not worried, just found it interesting that neither has said they're coming back for sure. Could be that they haven't been asked publicly so that's why there is no comment. If they tear up the combine they could see their stock rise heavely on potential alone. Personally, I see them both coming back. I think if anybody had the potential to leave early, aside from Hawk and Holmes, its Carpenter.

I think your hunch is right, that Salley/Schlegel haven't been asked publicly about leaving early because there's no real possibility of it happening. Neither is likely to be a first-day selection at this point, IMO, and both would benefit greatly from another year at OSU. I'll be shocked if any Buckeyes leave early after this season.

Isn't the combine only for players who have actually declared for the draft?

In past years NFL scouts have come to OSU to have the players tested. The juniors with potential are usually tested also. A couple of years ago junior Drew Carter ran a 4.26 40 in front of scouts, that's when his hype started.

I don't think Schlegel being married has anyting to do with him and the draft. Being 25 yrs old when the 2006 draft starts could possibly, but I also doubt that.

Out of those four, here's where I'd see them in the draft should they declare themselves eligible:

Hawk - Late 1st, early 2nd round
Holmes - Early/mid 2nd round
Salley - 5th or 6th round
Schlegel - 6th or 7th round

The only one I see whose early departure would be financially similar as if he remained through his senior year is Hawk. A.J. will probably gain only 10 draft positions by staying his senior year...but that could still prove to be a big chunk of change within the 1st round. Holmes could gain as as much as 20-30 positions, working his way into the mid/late 1st round, with a great senior year. Both Salley and Schlegel should be able to gain a full round by staying, barring injury.
