Buckeyes keep giving Mandel ammo

The jackass keeps begging ignorant fans on to email him, he keeps fueling the fire and he knows it.

This wouldn't be an issue if so many Buckeye fans didn't feel the need to fire off a million e-mails everytime we feel slighted or somebody says something less than flattering about us. The Joe Paterno joke during the awards show a few weeks ago comes to mind. We have the most insecure fan base in the country. I'd be annoyed too if I were a columnist. :shake:

That is good stuff. Mandel has to be one of the better internet sports guys out there. He is usually complimentary towards OSU, but the stupid contigent of the fanbase either dont notice or dont care and email him. He is clearly just trying to get a rise out of the fans...and of course they predictably respond.

He is clearly not a jackass. Just smart.

"Stewart, what no one seems to be mentioning is that the BCS was one Ryan Hamby dropped catch from all hell breaking loose. Having undefeated USC and one-loss Texas, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State would be the biggest controversy yet. The BCS got very lucky Hamby can't catch."

I fail to see how this is the "dumbest of the dumb" e-mail. The guy has a very valid point. How many on this site feel that we would have still lost the game had Hamby made the catch for the TD? Being up by 10 is huge compared to being up by six. Not only does it force Texas to score twice with at least one being a TD, it also keeps them from getting the momentum they got from keeping us out of the end zone. That play was the single-biggest momentum turner in the game.

Uh, the game and the missed catch were months ago. It's been talked about thoroughly, and yet, some people just can't let it go.

And Mandel made a good point. It was in the third quarter - it may have changed the game, but who knows if it would have changed the outcome. So why does some guy who thinks the world revolves around Ohio State all the time email a guy who can't wait paint Buckeye fans as way ovezealous that this particular play was the difference in the whole college football season? Dumb, dumb email.

Uh, I think you may want re-read the guy's e-mail in it's entirety. His point is that had Texas lost (and probably would had Hamby made the catch), then the BCS would be one giant clusterfuck right now with Texas, Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State all with one loss, instead of having two undefeated teams which made the BCS' job very simple. The guy is in no way whining that Texas was lucky that Hamby dropped the ball like so many of you are thinking he is...he's saying that the BCS is lucky that they don't have to face having four one-loss teams to pick from as USC's opponent, and that they were most likely only one play from that.

A Penn State fan could make a similar argument that the BCS was a Lloyd Carr whine job away from making the BCS a mess with 3 undefeated teams (remember last year with Auburn being left out?)...would you label the PSU fan a whiner, too?

Fair enough Mili, but would you disagree that we probably have the most trigger happy fanbase in the nation when it comes to columnists and other media types slighting us? It seems that our fanbase is incredibly quick to react to anything we disagree with in the media, and react with e-mails to everyone that is listening. Prime example is the JoePa thread on this very site after he made a harmless joke towards Herbie at the ESPN awards show earlier this month. This site was in an uproar about that, and it was nothing that anyone noticed aside from our fanbase. Maybe we are defensive from the whole media offensive following the MoC allegations in fall 2004, but we as a whole need to get over it. I realise as a diehard Buckeye fan that it may take a somewhat thicker skin than some other programs to be a fan. It's just something, as a whole we need to get over.

Mili is right about the intent of the message that Mandel quotes but Mandel does make some compelling points in response to not just that message but apparently to a lot of emails from Buckeye fans.

There's a lot of good points in this thread but it has been clear to me from about mid-season that we need to move on from that disgusting attack on Ohio State by ESPN.

Ohio State has one of the most loyal and committed fanbases in all of sports. That's a good thing. But, unless we let go of the anger we felt as a result of that disgusting attack, every time someone doesn't blow sunshine our way, we feel slighted.

I thought about my own reactions and I concluded that allowing myself to be angry just made that disgusting attack more successful. If I moved on, I reasoned that they had no effect on me, no matter what kind of nonsense they put out there for the world to see.

If some idiot wants to say Army-Navy is the top rivalry, why should we be offended? All that person does is to express an opinion that most people disagree with. We, and everyone else, know that our rivalry with TSUN is the top rivalry, bar none.

We are not always the best team in college sports. The best team doesn't always win the NC because a lot of luck goes into winning a NC in football or basketball. Whether commentators criticize the Bucks rightly or wrongly, the criticism has power only if we choose to give it power.

Mandel, Dodd and others have said things that flattered Ohio State and disparaged Ohio State over the years. I have no real bone to pick with them. I must admit that I still have difficulty going to ESPN but I do remember a time when it was my favorite site precisely because of the coverage they gave Ohio State.

It's time for the Buckeye Nation to "bring the temperature down". We need to have enough confidence in our Buckeyes and ourselves to ignore biased comments by Holtz, May, or anyone else. Life is too short and our teams are too good to worry about such nonsense.

Oh yeah, and to show how much I have moved on personally, I even wish that Trev Alberts finds employment in 2006. And to go even further, I'll chip in to buy him a squeegee, bucket, and cloth and help him find a busy intersection!

Well, if we are going to play "ifs, ands, and buts"....

What if Ohio State had beaten Texas? What if Notre Dame had beaten USC? Then you'd have six one-loss teams, with only two of those teams (Penn State, Notre Dame) having lost to a team outside of the six. What would the BCS do then? What about the pollsters? Scenarios like that will probably be more probable in upcoming years, when the teams will play 12 regular season games, and the likelihood that anyone will go undefeated will be diminished. Eventually, some "clusterfuck" will happen (worse than the 2004 debacle), and the BCS will have to go.

For those of us who HATE clicking on links...here's what Stewie said...

Stewart, what no one seems to be mentioning is that the BCS was one Ryan Hamby dropped catch from all hell breaking loose. Having undefeated USC and one-loss Texas, Ohio State, Oregon and Penn State would be the biggest controversy yet. The BCS got very lucky Hamby can't catch.
--Zack Daubenmire, Jackstown, Ohio
Certainly, it's been fun to play the "What if?" game this BCS season. What if Matt Leinart's fumble against Notre Dame hadn't gone out of bounds? What if Michigan hadn't gotten those two extra seconds against Penn State? And, as the above e-mail references, what if Texas hadn't come back to beat Ohio State? All would have made for a far more controversial Rose Bowl.
But to pin the whole thing on Ryan Hamby? You've got to be kidding me.
Hamby, you may recall, is the Ohio State tight end who received numerous death threats after bobbling, then dropping a wide-open touchdown catch in the much-watched Buckeyes-Longhorns game on Sept. 10. Pretty disgusting. Three months later, you would think all would finally be forgotten, but judging by my inbox, there are still plenty of Ohioans who blame Hamby for the Buckeyes falling short of the Rose Bowl (never mind that they lost a second game, to Penn State), while others seem to consider his drop one of the seminal moments of the season, right alongside the Reggie Bush push.
Personally, I'd completely forgotten about it until watching an ESPN Classic replay of the Texas-Ohio State game a couple weekends ago, during which I came to the following conclusion: Ryan Hamby may be the most unfairly vilified player in the history of college football.
OK, so that may be overstating it a bit, but there's one indisputable fact about the play that makes e-mails like the one above so ridiculous: IT HAPPENED IN THE THIRD QUARTER. You read that right. Hamby did not drop the game-winning touchdown on the final play. Rather, his gaffe was the difference between the Buckeyes going up 26-16 instead of 22-16, opening the door for Vince Young to throw the winning touchdown... more than a quarter later. How are we to know how the rest of the game would have turned out if he had scored? Both teams might have played differently. Maybe Young would have thrown a second touchdown. Maybe he would have tried to force things, thrown a pick, and fallen behind by 17. We'll never know whether that drop truly made the difference.
What we do know is that Ohio State had plenty of other opportunities to extend its lead and a chance to come back after Young's touchdown. In fact, watching the Buckeyes drive to the Texas 29 with less than six minutes to go, already up six, you'd have a hard time believing they actually lost the game.
On the very next play, however, Texas defensive tackle Rodrique Wright stuffed Ohio State tailback Antonio Pittman for a 4-yard loss, forcing Josh Huston to attempt a 50-yard field goal that missed by fewer than 4 yards. Then, on what would become the game-winning drive, an OSU player lined up offsides on a 'Horns third-and-1 play, giving them a first down (Young threw the touchdown to Limas Sweed two plays later). Finally, on the Buckeyes' first play after getting the ball back, quarterback Justin Zwick got chased out of the pocket and got stripped by Texas LB Drew Kelson as he was running downfield.
Somehow, this was all Hamby's fault.
In the spirit of holiday giving, the Mailbag is asking all its readers to please, in the name of sanity, give poor Ryan Hamby a break. The fifth-year senior will be playing his final collegiate game in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame, and while the Mailbag has no rooting interest, if Ohio State does win, here's hoping Hamby catches the game-winning touchdown.

I've read it twice now, and it's still the same. The guy is basically arguing that Hamby's play was the biggest factor in the BCS working out the way it did. It was one of many plays that had an "effect." The emailer has a bias that the world revolves around Ohio State, and thus, that the BCS worked out only because Ohio State didn't beat Texas on account of a third quarter drop. The BCS worked out because it got lucky on many fronts this season, just as it did in 2002. The email, in my opinion, only confirms to many outside of Ohio what they already think - that Ohio State fans are full of themselves and carry a constant chip on their shoulder.

If the emailer really wanted to have an objective argument about the most important play of the season as far as the Rose Bowl scenario goes, he should have gone with Leinart's sneak at ND or Henne to Manningham against PSU. Those were the most important plays in the BCS working out with USC and Texas.
