COLUMBUS, Ohio - On the football field, Jim Tressel wants his Ohio State offense to rush for 200 yards a game, pass for 250 more and score at least 40 points. Defensively, the Buckeyes strive to hold their opponents to less than two touchdowns each time they take the field.
Tressel has equally lofty expectations for his team in the classroom, where the goal is a cumulative 3.00 grade point average for the entire squad.
The Buckeyes took a step closer to that goal this past academic quarter when 51 student-athletes posted a 3.00 or higher, raising the team GPA to a solid 2.84.
Three Buckeyes - Anthony Gonzalez, James Laurinaitis and Austin Spitler - recorded perfect 4.00s Winter Quarter. It was the fourth 4.00 for Gonzalez, who is majoring in philosophy and is interested in one day becoming a Rhodes Scholar.
"We are making steady improvement," said Tressel. "We just need to keep it going. We have 45 players with a 3.00 accum. That's good, but we can do better."
The Buckeyes also had seven players graduate at the end of Winter Quarter, including Doug Datish, who returns in 2006 for his final season of eligibility.
The other graduates are R.J. Coleman, Ryan Hamby, Lydell Ross, Anthony Schlegel, Brandon Schnittker and Rob Sims.
