BuckeyePlanet Homework

Clarity

Grab a player, post his name here perhaps, then start (on your own timeline, no rush here) learning everything you can about him. Keep a little file or notes perhaps, who knows. Collect links to pictures. Anything about them as a player, after they played for us, before. Whatever is relevant. This is not an invitation to go snooping through Joey Galloway's underwear drawer when he's not home. It is an invitation to contribute to a new BP offshoot/feature when it launches.

Players, seasons, individual games, uniform details, tradition, history, coaches, administration, equipment, the Shoe -- whatever. This new project will be defined (as everything is here) by what we collectively bring to it.

Everyone is invited and encourage to participate. This goes for you lurkers (registered and unregistered alike) as well. This is a BP project, but it's for all OSU fans, and/or anyone interested in anything Buckeye.

More details to follow in the near future, assuming I can recompile PHP.

Sounds good. I think it would definitely be wise to know who is doing which player so that we don't have 50 people doing Ted Ginn Jr. At the very least, we should have people claim a player on this thread. Maybe even an incentive program (in addition to the greenies that are sure to be given to good work).

I call Pete Carroll

As far as I'm concerned, the more obscure the better.

Just to be more clear for the lurkers, the interface for this project will be one that you will not have to be registered in order to participate, although certainly that means effort goes without proper editorial credit and is subject to greater scrutiny.

Finally, one caveat -- everything we end up 'publishing' about people/time/places needs to be just, responsible, and accurate. References are crucial in anything that may be controversial (MoC for example). Speculation and debate is for the forums, this is going to be a factual information resource.

I only offer this to help shape the process for anyone who decides to participate early -- and I hope a LOT of people will decide to get involved and do so. This could really be a lot of fun. Adopt a player, and become an expert on him.

I look forward to seeing where this is going.

Me too. Some will feel that there's a better place to do this, but my take is that the level of scope and detail I imagine (because ultimately I want something on every single player and person of interest, every game -- AND all has to be able to tie into a future statistical resource[sup]1[/sup]) would pollute anything but a resource dedicated to the Buckeyes. This won't be a cutting edge development by any means, indeed, we're going to use the very same tools the "big boy" does, but I perceive a big gaping hole and believe we can fill it.

I'm not trying to be evasive here at all. There's just no name for this yet, we'll decide that too at some point.

1. I have an open dialog with our long-lost programmer about the long-forgotten stats engine, and this solution (which wasn't possible back when I first engaged him) allows us to produce that project on a smaller scale as a large part of what it was meant to be with be handled by this project.
