BuckeyeGolf: The Fall Season Begins

That is a great description of Pebble Beach, and the Monterrey Peninsula, as well. The Ohio State men’s golf team (OSUMG) made a journey to this “felicitous meeting of land and sea” to participate in The Carmel Cup. This event is hosted by Vanderbilt University. Other participants are Arkansas, Georgia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas Tech. The venue is at Pebble Beach Golf Links; yardage is 6,828 yards, par is 72 and scenery is breathtaking. The format is “play six (players), count five”.
This is the inaugural match for the new OSUMG staff: Head Coach Jay Moseley and Asst Coach Brad Smith.
Teeing it up for the Buckeyes are: Grant Weaver (RS-SR). Josh Wick (RS SO), Tee-k Kelly (SR), Sean Busch (SR), Clark Engle (JR) and Will Grimmer (FR). So, how did our lads do?
Overall
With Oklahoma State winning this event, Ohio State finished T-7th in the 8 team field, shooting a team total of 1,107 which tied them with Arkansas. The first couple hours (9 holes or so) went very well for the Buckeyes. The rest of the event was a bit of a struggle. For the Buckeyes, the event had stretches of: brilliant play. Stretches of steady, tee-to-green play and stretches of “I wish I could take a mulligan” play.
This event took form during the 2nd round. Traditional power Oklahoma State pulled away to establish a comfortable margin. Vanderbilt, Georgia, Oklahoma and Texas Tech jostled for 2nd place, while Ohio State, TCU and Arkansas played for 6th place.
Although I am disappointed (I’m damn sure the team is) with the results there are glimpses of high level golf by this team. The Buckeyes finished 1 stroke out of 6th place; 8 strokes out of 5th. If the five “scoring” golfers could have each saved 1 stroke in one round, OSU would have finished in 6th place alone. Over two rounds, they would have finished 5th… you get the idea. This team was close.

1st Round
The Buckeyes ended the round in 6th place, 12 over par (+12) for the round. The first round started with promise, with OSU’s team score of (-1) for the front nine placing them in 3rd place at the time. Things got a bit out of hand on the back nine.
Clark Engle +2 had a six-stroke swing (34-40, 74) on his 9-hole scores, while Tee-k Kelly +4 went (34-42, 76), suffering two triple bogies on his back nine. Fortunately, Will Grimmer +1 (37-36, 73), Grant Weaver +2 (37-37, 74) and Sean Busch +3 (37-38, 75) provided some scoring stability for the round. Josh Wick +12 (40-44, 84) just couldn’t get his round going.
2nd Round
The Buckeyes improved dramatically by finishing the 2nd round at four over par (+4). However, they dropped one spot to 7th place after this round. Will Grimmer continued his great play shooting a 68 (-4) to lead OSU. Sean Busch continued his steady play with a 73 (+1) and Josh Wick rebounded from his disappointing 1st round with a 73 (+1). Clark Engle and Grant Weaver contributed 75’s (+3). Tee-k Kelly struggled with a 77 (+5). His front-9 score of 39 (+3) had three birdies, three bogeys, two pars and a triple bogey (ugh).. That must have been one interesting walk.
3rd Round
Much as the 1st round (+12) wasn’t that good, the 3rd round was about the same, with the team scoring eleven over par (+11). Clark Engle 69 (-3) was absolutely stellar on Sunday. Despite a double bogey on the 5th hole, Clark “bounced back” with two consecutive birdies to shoot a front 9 35 (-1). His 3 birdies/1 bogey back 9 provided an impressive 34 (-2). Josh Wick 72 (E) continued his strong weekend play. Although he double bogeyed the 15th hole, Josh birdied 2 of his last 3 holes for a very strong finish. Sean Busch 75 (+3) where his 5 birdies couldn’t quite cancel his two triple bogeys. Will Grimmer 76 (+4) overcame a triple bogey on the 4th hole to play the next 14 holes on +1, he was even par on the back 9 Despite back-to-back triple bogeys on the back nine, Grant Weaver 79 (+7) rebounded by playing the last five holes in one under (-1) par. Tee-K Kelly 81 (+9) continued his struggles from Round 2.
19th Hole
The OSUMG team is off for a week, then head up the road to Toledo, OH to the world class Inverness Country Club for the Inverness Intercollegiate event. The tournament is September 21st-22nd.
Meanwhile, the Ohio State women’s golf team (OSUWG) will be in Albuquerque, NM this coming weekend September 14th-15th for the Dick McGuire Invitational.
