Coaches Jay Moseley and Brad Smith loaded up the “lads, clubs & cleats” in the van and headed north on Rt 23 to Toledo, Ohio’s storied Inverness Club for the Inverness Intercollegiate. Inverness was founded in 1903 and has hosted multiple U.S. Opens, U.S. Senior Opens. PGA Championships and a US Amateur. This is a big-time golf venue.

The 54 hole event, played Monday and Tuesday, is played on Inverness’ 7,296 yard, par 71 course. That is a lot of golf course for a par 71. The format is ‘play five count four’, where a school fields 5 players, and the low 4 scores for each round are counted. Fifteen teams participated in this event.

The five players participating in the team score were: SR Tee-K Kelly, SR Sean Busch, JR Clark Engle, RS JR Michael Bernard and FR Will Grimmer.

Overall

The Buckeyes finish in 6th place, with a team total of 892 (+40). After last week’s choppy inaugural event of the season, the Buckeyes responded with a solid effort in two of the three rounds. From a team perspective, the 1st round (+13) wasn’t too bad of an opening round, since it positioned them in 4th place. The 2nd round (+22) was a round where everyone played “sort of OK” but nothing exceptional. The 3rd round, however, was exceptional, with the Buckeyes shooting a team (+5) which moved them up to 6th place.

First Round

The Buckeyes shot a team score of 297 (+13), placing them in 4th position. That’s a pretty good position to be in after 18 holes. The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly 71 (E) and Will Grimmer 72 (+1). Clark Engle 75 (+4) and Michael Bernard 79 (+8) also contributed to the team score. Sean Busch’s 82 (+11) put him on the side for this round.

Will, Clark and Tee-K played pretty well on the back-9 shooting a combined Even par, then pretty much held form on the front 9 (combined +5). Michael stumbled a bit, shooting a 39 (+4) on the front, while Sean had some serious issues with 4 bogeys a double bogey and a triple bogey enroute to a 44 (+9). Oddly, the 5th hole, a 455 yard par 4, gave the Buckeyes problems. The five OSU players played it in +6, an average of 5.2 strokes. Playing overall at 4.63 strokes, it was the 4th hardest hole, so it gave everyone a lot a problems. Unfortunately, the Buckeyes more then most.

Second Round

For the 2nd round, the Buckeyes dropped to 9th place due to a team score of 306 (+22). The five Buckeyes had a very good back 9, shooting an aggregate (+3). However, the front 9 undid them, as they shot an aggregate (+27). The Buckeyes were led by Clark Engle 76 (+5) and Tee-K Kelly 76 (+5). Sean Busch and Michael Bernard contributed 77’s (+6) to the team score. Will Grimmer shot a 79 +8). None of these scores were horrific, but none of them were low enough to help maintain OSU’s first round position.

Here’s how bizarre this round went, especially considering it was played immediately after conclusion of the first round. Bernard and Busch, who barely and didn’t break 80 in the 1st round, respectively, rebounded to post respectable scores just hours later. The Buckeyes continued to play the back 9 well in both rounds, but have yet to figure out the front 9.

Third Round

For the 3rd round, the Buckeyes got things pretty well figured out, shooting a 289 (+5) to move them up three positions to 6th place. The Buckeyes were led by Tee-K Kelly and Will Grimmer, each shooting 71’s (E). Sean Busch 73 (+2) and Clark Engle 74 (+3) also contributed to the team score. Michael Bernard struggled in with a 78 (+7). Although to be honest, I’d be thrilled to ‘struggle in’ with a 78!

The 3rd round scoring (+5) was the 2nd best round of the day. This has to be encouraging to the coaches, and to the team.

Thoughts

I know that the team wanted a better finish, but I don’t think was all that bad. They had a decent enough 1st round, really faltered in the 2nd round, then closed with a very solid performance in the 3rd round. I think that at this point in the Fall Season, the coaches are looking at different player combinations, the capability of the team to not let rounds get away from them and the ability for the players to close strong in the final round. There are still a couple speed bumps, but I see progress being made. You should expect to see some uneven performances as the coaching staff sorts through lineup combinations. With that said, the upper classmen (Kelly, Weaver, Engle, Coll and Bernard) need to step up to provide stability.

Sifting through the chaff, here is a “what happened” snap-shot. They played the par 3’s so-so, scoring an average of 3.47 strokes per hole, a total of +21 to par; good enough to rank 9th. They played the par 5’s to an average of 4.83 per hole (pretty good), a total of -5 to par, ranking 5th. They played the par 4’s to an average of 4.26 per hole, +50 to par, ranking them 5th. The par 4’s still need work, but since almost everyone else struggled it didn’t hurt them too much this week.

In terms of “to par” scoring, Ohio State recorded 150 pars (of 270 holes played). That placed them in 6th position with that metric. They did record 34 birdies, placing them 5th. They scored no eagles for the event. This is going to be a fun group of players to watch as the season unfolds.

The OSUMG team is back at it next week (September 27-28) at the Windon Memorial in Glencoe, IL.

Go Buckeyes!
