Recruiting Rundown
By Brandon Castel
January 14, 2010

...
That is the day when high school prospects can first submit their letters of intent to respective schools, and we plan to count down the weeks until Feb. 3, 2010 with a weekly look at recruiting called The Recruiting Rundown. This piece is in no way a representation of actual interviews between O-Zone staff members and high school athletes, but more of a look at the latest recruiting news according to those who cover it.

OSU football recruiting class rated only 22nd
By STEVE HEMMELGARN
[email protected] POSTED: January 16, 2010

The euphoria from the Rose Bowl win over Oregon may soon be overshadowed by the fact that when Ohio State's 2010 football recruiting class is announced Feb. 3, it may be the lowest ranked of any on Jim Tressel's watch with the Buckeyes.

Right now, Rivals.com has OSU rated as just the 22nd-best recruiting group in the country with only two players on their top 100 list of potential college prospects.

However, the Buckeyes' stock could climb if they beat out the other top suitors Texas and Florida for homestate Lakota West linebacker Jordan Hicks, the consensus best prep linebacker in the country and the second-ranked overall player available by ESPN.

Ohio State
Commits: 17 | ESPNU 150: 4

The Buckeyes currently trail Penn State in the class rankings, but still remain a force on the recruiting trail within the conference. This class is currently not as strong as their previous two, but is still a good haul. They have four ESPNU 150 prospects on board, including two Under Armour All-Americans in wide receiver James Louis (Delray Beach, Fla./Atlantic Community) and the versatile Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara). The Buckeyes are also bringing in a quartet of defensive linemen led by the physically impressive Darryl Baldwin (Solon, Ohio/Solon) and David Durham (Charlotte, N.C./Christian). Durham is a versatile and physical defender who could develop into a Thaddeus Gibson-like player for the Buckeyes.

Top prospect: Despite landing one of the top running backs in last year's class, the Buckeyes' 2010 class is once again headed by a running back. Roderick Smith (Fort Wayne, Ind./Harding) is a big back with an impressive size-to-speed ratio. While he is a physically impressive back he is athletic and can hit the cutback lane, make defenders miss and create big plays.

Don't be surprised if: The Buckeyes' class makes a run at the top spot within the conference. Linebacker Jordan Hicks (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) may be a bit of a long shot, but top offensive line prospect Seantrel Henderson (Saint Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), offensive tackle Matt James (Cincinnati/Saint Xavier) and safety Christian Bryant (Cleveland/Glenville) remain strong possibilities.

Few jewels for Buckeyes but many needed pieces
Article published January 31, 2010
By MATT MARKEY

...
The class of recruits the five-time defending Big Ten champion Buckeyes is expected to sign this week does not have the wealth of stars of recent groups, but the experts see it as a very sound assembly of players that will address the deficiencies on the Ohio State roster.

"They had a couple of the top-five recruiting classes in the country in the last two years, so it's improbable that they would have a third in a row," said Steve Helwagen, managing editor of Bucknuts magazine and Web site. "This is more of a transitional class, a complementary class. They filled position needs."

National Signing Day preview: Big Ten

Ohio State: The Buckeyes may not have quite the class as Penn State and doesn?t look to be as strong as the ?08 and ?09 haul, but they do boast four ESPNU 150 prospects ? including two Under Armour All-Americans in WRs James Louis and Corey Brown. In addition, top OL prospect Seantrel Henderson remains a possibility, which could allow the Buckeyes to surpass the Nittany Lions in overall class strength. RB Roderick Smith is the gem of this year?s class, as the physically imposing back possesses an intriguing blend of speed, size and athleticism. Darryl Baldwin and David Durham lead a group of defensive linemen who should be able to cause havoc inside, like so many other great OSU defenders.

Buckeyes grab 18 players on signing day
By Rusty Miller
POSTED: 04:07 p.m. EST, Feb 03, 2010

COLUMBUS: Despite locking up 18 players on Wednesday's first day for football signings, much of the focus on Ohio State's recruiting class will be on the ones that got away.

Coach Jim Tressel and his staff picked up two quarterbacks, two running backs, three defensive linemen and several other quality prospects, but everyone will be talking about the loss of several major players from within Ohio's borders.

The Buckeyes, who usually fatten up on Ohio-bred blue-chippers, signed just nine in-state players. To put that into perspective, Michigan signed 10 players from Ohio.

The top names on the recruiting list were Roderick Smith, a running back out of Fort Wayne, Ind., and wide receiver James Louis out of Delray Beach, Fla.
