Buckeye Planet Poll Week 7

exhawg said:
Now that we are out of the NC picture a Texas/USC Rose Bowl would make a good game if they both get there, but so would VT. I would love to see an OSU/ND matchup in one of the other BCS games, but our offense is going to have to start playing a lot better to finish the season without losing again.
What team do we have left that scares you?

25 Minnesota

Why my ballot looks like this ...

I am thoroughly unimpressed by the SEC this year. Georgia and Alabama get the top nods because they've beaten who they were scheduled to play and have pretty stout defenses, but the competition has been very weak.

I'm not rewarding Texas Tech for beating two D1AA opponents, a D1A transitional opponent, the two worst teams in the Big-XII north, and Nebraska. TTU's schedule thus far is laughable even by Glen Mason's standards.

I couldn't pull the trigger on hitting Penn State with a huge penalty for scoring the game winning TD and kicking the ball to Steve Breaston. If that game is played 10 times PSU wins 7 of 10.

UCLA was rewarded for back-to-back come from behind wins over Cal and at Wazzu.

Auburn is underrated, while Miami and LSU are both overrated (I think Ohio State beats either at a neutral site).

Tennessee doesn't even deserve to be ranked, if Les Miles could coach the Vols would be 2-3 with remarkably unimpressive wins over UAB and Ole Miss (two teams which combined have beaten three 1A opponents, Troy, Rice, and Memphis).

Virginia and Fresno are currently 25b & 25c, Colorado and Minnesota are just keeping the seats warm.

If we play like we did the past 2 weeks Northwestern and scum. Minn. isn't a gimme either being an away game, but I think our defense can play well against them since they are a running team. We scored 28 pts against NU last year and it wasn't enough. Their spread offense is hard for our defense to stop and now they have Sutton to run the ball. Except for a few big plays last week our offense has looked like crap since Iowa.

I voted Texas first this week. I can't remember the rest they're on my other computer and I'll try to post them on Thursday or Friday. This could be a big week also for teams to make a move.

I was really close to putting Texas #1. If USC struggles again and Texas pounds Texas Tech, the Longhorns move to the top.

I notice a lot of people dropped USC to #2 behind Texas and have taken USC to task for playing close games. I'm wondering why this is? Texas trailed Ohio State on the road at halftime and came back and won. USC has trailed Arizona State, Oregon, and Notre Dame, all on the road (3 road games in 4 weeks!) and won them all. All three of these teams were ranked at the time, and ND and Oregon are still in the Top-15.

Seems like a double standard to me. If JT took the Bucks to Happy Valley, Madison, and Ann Arbor in three of four weeks and won close, come-from-behind games we'd erect a statue to him. Am I missing why this is not good enough for Petey and USC? Since the 2002 loss to Kansas State not one OOC opponent has been within double digits of USC up until the Notre Dame game. This stretch includes three bowls, two Big-10 co-champs, and a Big-12 champ. I mean, these were all games that were over midway through the third quarter.

How many points does USC have to win by to remain #1?

Oops. I was actually having a little trouble deciding where to rank Georgia, Alabama and UCLA. I moved them around a couple times before I decided on fucking it up .

How many points does USC have to win by to remain #1?
It isn't the margin of victory that makes me think Texas is better. Watching both teams play makes me think that. Texas has as good/nearly as good of an offense as USC, but has a much better defense. I think Virginia Tech beats them on a neutral field, and Texas could beat them anywhere.

They haven't beaten anybody. Losing close to MSU and USC isn't impressive, neither team has a defense.

My sentiments exactly. When ND beats a legitimate top 25 team, then maybe the media's love for them can begin to be justified. Their biggest accomplishment this year was hanging close with a USC team, but Arizona, Oregon, and Arizona State each did that as well.

Dry - it's a matter of philosophy, I think.

Some voters want to "predict the champion"
Some voters want to capture who is best today
Some voters say, "Well, you're #1 til you lose"

I don't have a problem with any of these styles. Actually, when Kbuck and I were setting this up, we kicked around the idea of setting a criteria, and determined that limiting the way people vote to one of the above theories would not be a good plan.

I think Texas is playing better than SC, and head to head, I'd take Texas over USC I think. But, in the same manner which you allude, I can't fault USC for winning albeit in non-conclusive fashion. You make a good point about how if OSU came back and won when they HAD to, we'd build a statue. I guess its a matter of perception - luck versus grit.

This week I fell on the side of "grit" but I must admit, I almost called it "luck" and sent them down a notch.

Subbing as grammar nazi for vrb, who doesn't visit this board much. The single form of the word is criterion, it takes at least 2 items to have criteria. :wink2:
