Buckeye Fact or Fiction '06 Edition Pt.1

1. Santonio Holmes was the biggest loss on the offensive side of the ball?

Fact. Who did the Bucks lose? Holmes and a couple linemen? And I think Hamby is gone. Hamby isn't a big loss, because the Nicol and Frost are supposedly studs. Mangold is a big loss, but I think that the young linemen are going to fill in nicely. Whoever the other loss on the line is (can't remember his name) isn't going to be as big of a loss as Mangold is. Holmes, however, is the all-around playmaker for the bucks. From what I've seen, the Bucks do not have someone to replace Holmes. (I'd love to be wrong about this.)

2. Ginn will be a legitimate #1 reciever at the beginning of the year?

Fiction. Beginning of the year? Absolutely not. I don't pretend to have any special knowledge of "what makes a #1 receiver." It's just my gut instinct. And it tells me that Ginn will always be an enormous threat to defenses, but you can't put the weight of the team on him and expect him to come through. Yes, I saw the Michigan game, and he made some great plays. I just think those plays are not consistent enough from him. End of the year? Probably he will be more refined and a better receiver.

3. Ohio State's defense will be ranked in the top 15 next year?

Fiction. I'd say closer to 20-25. Their run defense, will, again, be the strength of the defense. But teams are going to come out throwing. I think the offense will get comfortable leads, forcing the opposition to throw even more, plus the back-ups will be in much of the 2nd half in many games.

4. Ohio State's offense will be ranked in the top 10 next year?

Fiction. The offense will be very effective in what Tressel wants it to do: stay on the field and not make many mistakes. They'll score points, and they'll score them at will against many teams. But top 10 is "reserved" for the teams that are going to play 4-5 receivers every down. Ohio State is not going to play that way.

5. Chris Wells will score more TD's than Antonio Pittman?

Fiction. Chris Wells may be a stuf and a half, and he may pass Haw and Maurice Wells on the depth chart, but I don't see him passing Pittman. The only way I see CWells scoring more touchdowns is if he becomes the Bucks' goal line man, which is a good possibility. But even in those cases, I can see Troy Smith taking QB sneaks and options into the endzone.
