Browns' drafts since 1999

Isn't this like beating a freaking dead horse. Oh wait... we are Browns fans so we must put us through the most torture possible.

Remembering those first few drafts we screwed up so badly in judgng talent and not leveraging our positions to get more draft picks. I for one would have taken Ditka's deal in a second. With moving down I would have liked to take Culpepper. Then I would have given Culpepper the McNair treatment telling him to watch... and you will not see the field even in emergencies until you get the system down in your sleep and our team has settled down from its Expansion infancy (late 2nd year or 3rd year) But if the Browns were going to stay at #1 then Couch was the only pick. But their mistake was rushing him to the field.

Remember, McNabb was a HUGE risk. An option QB in College never had success in the NFL up to that point. But I have a feeling even if we took McNabb his future would have been different. He would have been just as bad as Couch.

The biggest problem in all of those early drafts were no offensive linemen. Plus rushing a young QB behind an expansion Offensive Line. It ruined the young QB and it would have ruined anyone. Couch got gun shy really quick and you can see why. Have we gone one year since the Browns have been back without an injured QB??? THAT is the root of all evil.

Also, this is my first sight on next year... Keep Garcia. Let him be the sacrifical lamb as the offensive line gets better. When you are confident that it won't kill a QB then get Luke in there to learn. Because if they start Luke next year and the O-Line is still a seive then he will get messed up just like Couch.

McNabb wasn't an option QB. He passed for over 2,000 yards and 20 TD's a season. There was option plays but it wasn't an option offense. McNabb did alot of scrambling and QB draws mainly. I don't think he was that much of a risk at all, mainly because the kid was born to be a leader. Just my opinion, anyways.

I agree with you completely about the infamous Ditka trade with Washington and thanks for bringing it up. The Browns could have slipped to just #12 and picked up 5 more picks that year, plus, Washington's first and third the year after, and that first ended up being the #2 pick in 2000. Cleveland could have used to take Samuels or Arrington. I understand wanting to get the "sure thing" with the #1 pick, but that first round was littered with talent. Granted, the only franchise QB available at #12 was McNown, so they could have been in worse trouble, but Tait and Kearse were there also. It's interesting to say the least, had Cleveland done that trade.

About Couch. I don't think he would have made it anywhere. He was a run and shoot QB used to 4 wideouts at all times and he never saw that much pressure cause every pass was a 5-10 yard cut. Personally, I didn't see much difference between him and Klingler when Klingler was at Houston. Couch had no clue what an NFL pass rush was like when he got thrown into an I offense with no pass catching TE and short wideouts. Not having an OL obviously didn't help but I don't think Couch could have succeeded with Marino's line in the 80's. Plus he wasn't mature enough to handle it all. It was simply an awful pick.
