Kyle Young/Cade Stover man crush. Stomp!
  • This is what we need: Bring back the OSU greats to coach at tOSU. Those that want to anyway. Tressel should hire guys like Spielman to run the defense and Pete Johnson to coach the running backs. They need and Oline greats to coach the lineman.Don't know who would be the best choice here, one of you better versed in OSU lore could fill that in. Maybe Cris Carter could coach the WR's and some other guys for specialty. The thing this team lacks right now is heart. We just don't seem to go after other teams the way we used to. The 2002 team showed so much heart maybe I've become a little spoiled. In fact, I think I am spoiled because I've had the good fortune to see people play the game the way its meant to be played, with Fire and Energy and relentless will to overcome on every snap of the football. I grew up idolizing the Spielmans and Byers. Those were men who just never quit-EVER! We have some of those players on our team now. Not everyone is lacking in spirit. I do believe some of the coaching staff is lacking in their ability to bring out the best in our young players. I think some of the OSU greats who played that way would be a great inspiration to the younger players today. When our backs were up against it this weekend I didn't see any coaches on the sidelines "getting after" the players the way they used to. Have we become so complacent? Do we think that just by showing up we will win regardless? We need that fire and intensity to come through when we're down collectively. I know JT has a calming effect on players when the chips are down and that works too. I for one, would just like to see some of the players play "pissed off" from time to time! Teams like NW should not be able to dictate to the Buckeyes no matter where the game or the conditions.

There I finally got to vent. Thanks.

Jeesh, we lose one game and we need to fire Tress, fire the assistants, replace the QB and the entire defensive backfield.

I've read these "solutions" on various threads here and at other sites. I would be the last person to say we don't have problems with our offense, namely the running game, and we saw a lackluster performance from the players and the coaches this week, but I think a lot of folks are overreacting to one game.

I am one to agree that many are going overboard on the loss, but our running game has been shit since Clarett left. Our OL cannot dominate anyone, and that's unacceptable. The only reason why Ross rolled up yardage against Indiana last year (our only truly dominant rushing game) was because Indiana was running a weird-ass 2-5 scheme. Ross had 100+ yards in the first quarter, but once Indiana went away from that scheme, it was almost back to normal.

I'd go one further, Mili and say that our running game was shit even with Clarett, relatively speaking. That's apparent from the yards that Hall and Ross gained behind the same line. Clarett actually could've broken 2K with a decent supporting cast and had he not missed several games.

Absolutely agree, Mili. That's why I didn't list changing running backs in my post. Maybe our o-line isn't as good run blocking as they should be, but I see a noticable improvement when Pittman or Joe carry the ball vs Ross. I'm tired of seeing him arm tackled or tripped up by a defender barely grabbing an ankle.

True, but we still don't have a "power" running game. Several folks have brought up in other threads our piss poor goal line running game. If we have the ball first and goal from the five or less, then there should not be a single team in the country that can stop us from running the ball...no reason why we can't gain 5 or less yard on four or less carries, even if the defense has everyone on the line. The OL should always have the advantage because they are bigger and know the snap count, and thus should get the jump and subsequent initial push. The blocking FB should take out any LB in the way and the other power back, with his running head start, should be able to at least gain a yard or two even if there are no holes, every time.

This is just one long topic from 2003 untill today. Is it the play calling, is it the OL, is it the RB? What do we pin the offensive woes on?

Well just like last year there is no one thing, its a combination of all three. One play we run into the teeth of a 9 man front, the next a hole is closed because someone fails to hold a block, the third Lydell misses the gaping hole and is tackled for his career average 3 yd gain.

The offensive woes are based a little on all three area's but imo RB still needs to take the lions share of the heat. Ross and Hall, for numerous reasons, have had forgettable careers to say the least. Our FB situation has also pretty much sucked balls for the last 2+ years as well.

Bottom line to me is if we had 3 years of MoC and a Jamar Martin clone we are bitching about something other than the running game right now.

how difficult/what would it take to get some of the pro greats into the weight rooms during the off season? osugrad21 makes a good point in great players do not always make great coaches. but them being around would be a huge boost to the players imo.

I don't clame to be an expert, but I played offensive line at Centerville high school and Otterbein college. Zone blocking does not work. The offensive linemen loses all of his advantage by letting the defender get inside hands on him. Thus he can do what he wants to him. If they came off the ball and attacked they could get inside hands and have the defensive guy on the back of his feet thus a push down field. This line gets no push and does not block backside gaps worth crap. The only way you can run with this line is with a special player like MoC. If you come off the ball low and hard it doesn't matter what size of limeman you are you will move people of the ball.

If we had MoC and a Martin clone this whole time, we'd be talking about our current 31-game win streak...
