Baltimore fires Billick after nine seasons, one Super Bowl win

Dec. 31, 2007
CBSSports.com wire reports

OWINGS MILL, Md.-- Brian Billick was fired as coach of the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, less than a day after his team concluded a disappointing 5-11 season.

Players were told of the dismissal as they packed up their lockers at the team's practice facility.

Billick won the 2001 Super Bowl in his second season with the Ravens, and led the team to a franchise-best 13-3 record in 2006. But Baltimore lost a team-record nine consecutive games this season before ending the skid Sunday with a 27-21 win over Pittsburgh.

Great news for the Ravens, as Billick's ego appeared to be getting in the way of the direction of the team.

If it hadn't have been for his Super Bowl victory, Billick would have been canned three or four years ago.

On another note, this is great news for Troy Smith, as well. It seemed like Billick would never give him a fighting chance. In my opinion, I think his firing may have had a bit to do with Troy and his role on the football team. I believe Billick was against him starting and wanted Boller as the starter while he was there.

Great news for the Ravens, and especially Troy.

Glad to see him go, but still happy with his accomplishments. Weird the way a Super Bowl win will do that for you.

His ego will not be missed.

This is a mix of good and bad for Troy, but most likely bad. I say this because I think the new coach will be under the impression that he needs to make a splash in the draft offensively, and I hope he doesn't do it with a qb. Hopefully it will be a dual threat WR/KR.

Brian was on 1080 the fan out here in Oregon today. The hosts asked him if he had kids. He has two. One is out of school completely and the other is a sophomore at tOSU. Did anyone know this?

I didn't know that, but it's pretty cool.
