Bret Bielema (HC Illinois)

Illinois signs Bret Bielema to new 6-year deal through 2028

Illinois coach Bret Bielema, who this season guided the team to its highest wins total since 2007, has agreed to a new contract through the 2028 season.

Bielema, who is 13-11 in his second season at Illinois, will receive an annual salary increase from $4.3 million this season to $6 million in the new agreement, which is pending board approval in January. The new deal includes annual raises and bonuses, including a $500,000 annual retention. Bielema also is eligible for up to four one-year extensions if he meets certain performance benchmarks, not disclosed in Tuesday's announcement.

Bielema initially agreed to a six-year, $26.7 million deal with Illinois in December 2020.

Bret is the new SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN.....
We rip on this guy... but good for him.

He went to a school that's tough to win at and got his ass kicked. Not many people would get back up and perform this well.

What he's doing is sustainable too. Good defense, run game and so so throw game.

where you do it matters. a LOT.

at Arkansas, you’re never going to win a Natty, and hell would need to freeze over before you win the SEC.
but god damn those pig fuckers just do not realize their place in the world and think they should be Alabama.

Illinois on the other hand?
they would build a statue of him, but i’m not sure they have enough money to purchase the sheet quantity of metal needed to build one of that fat bastard.

That's where their B1G tv deal is going to go in a few years.

Also they still gave him a raise despite the end season collapse that cost them a for sure berth in the B1G championship game

Yes. Exactly.

Arkansas has tasted a sugar bowl before (and lost) whereas Illinois won't come close anytime soon for big time football. Expectations are everything.

Bret Bielema almost became Miami Dolphins' head coach, explains how

Illinois football coach Bret Bielema says he dodged a bullet following his 2011 season at Wisconsin, after flirting with an opportunity with the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. Bielema shared behind-the-scenes details on nearly leaving the college ranks for the pros before a final campaign at Wisconsin prior to landing the Arkansas job the following year.

"Yeah, it kind of materialized in front of me after they called me in early December and I was in preparation for the Rose Bowl, had Russell Wilson as my quarterback," Bielema said on The Rich Eisen Show. "Kind of had a come to Jesus moment and where we all agreed to go ahead and then it kind of just ... one of the things I heard from a couple of the coaches I was involved with in the NFL was where you're at, but a lot about who you're around. And I didn't know if it was the right environment.

"I think the NFL is an unbelievable organization. It's really, truly ... my three years there, to win the Super Bowl, it's an incredible environment. It's all football. After football's done, you drop it and go to the draft. In the NFL though, you get to pick the ones you want and in college, they've got to pick you, so there's a little reverse strategy there. I didn't feel it was the right time and place."
