Breakout/clutch performances by back-ups/relative unknowns

Clutch:

Sure, we ran a 2 QB system that year, but iirc, Stanley Jackson started and Germaine was therefore the 'backup'...

Bobby Olive vs LSU in '88? Recruited by Earle, recruitment terminated by Cooper, came to OSU as a walk-on anyway and in Week 3 saved a game with perhaps the greatest comeback in the history of the Shoe. Ended LSU's 15 game road win streak.

Olive's game winning TD came opposite Michael Mayes, a RS Senior DB (recruiting class of '84) that wound up a 4th round pick of the Saints.

My favorite Buckeye, with my favorite number, playing my favorite position.

Chris Gamble. I refuse to check google, but I remember Mcnutt being hurt during the Kent State game and then Chris stepped in... you know, to finish the season as the team's co-MVP.

Of course one of the more memorable plays in Buckeye lore'...

It was just one play and it was a long time ago, so I'm not sure I have the details right:

It was 1987 (I think) against scUM (this I remember) and Greg Frey (I think) had to come in for Tom Tupa (I think) on a 3rd and medium (7 or so yards IIRC). He came in cold and threw a strike on a very important drive. I don't have time to look up the details right now; perhaps someone has a better memory of the event.

Well if you're going to mention Tupa, scUM, and 1987. How about this lil gem?

Place kicker Tom Klaban made fourteen field goals in his career, four of them in a 12-10 victory over Michigan in 1974.

Maurice Hall scored the game-winning touchdowns in both the Illinois and Michigan games in 2002, preserving an unbeaten regular season and sending the Buckeyes to the BCS championship game.

Running back Dante Lee rushed for 565 yards in his career, 157 of them against Northwestern in 1989.

I remember a player for the Buckeyes named Vaughn Broadnax. He was an unknown until his great game in 82 to help his efforts against Michigan that day and the field was a hard, wet and rainey astro turf that just had to be
miserable to play on. But i do remember how Broadnax had some great runs that day. But i can't remember if Ohio State went to the Rose Bowl or not
I don't think they did.

October 23, 1971 - In a game against Wisconsin, Morris Bradshaw (remember him? didn't think so) scored on an 88-yard rush (second longest in Ohio State history) and an 88-yard kick-off return. Bradshaw had 816 all-purpose yards for his three-year career, and gained 176 of those yards (21.6%) on those two plays.

One of my favorite back-ups was Bobby Atha. He kicked the hell out of the ball, but he always got mop up duty at QB. First play... Bobby Atha keeper to the left. Always. No question. But, can't think of another place kicker who played backup QB.

I remember cheering for him to kick it through the uprights on kick-offs as a kid. Granted, I think they kicked from the 40, but it was a rare thing back then.
