    ABOUT OHIO STATE

The Buckeyes are one of the hottest teams in the nation right now after winning all four games they played March 10-12 at the College Baseball Spring Classic at Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Fla. Ohio State took both ends of a doubleheader vs. Lehigh, winning 17-10 and 13-6, before beating Northern Iowa 9-6 and Bethune-Cookman 9-1. In the four games, the Scarlet and Gray scored 48 runs on 73 hits, batting .468 for the week.
OSU center fielder Matt Angle batted .647 in going 11-for-17 with seven RBI and nine runs scored. He was 5-for-6 for the second straight Sunday, getting hits in his first five at bats in games against Western Michigan and Bethune-Cookman. He also had two sacrifice flies and a sac bunt last week and was 3-for-4 in the stolen base department. Angle did not have the only hot bat for the Buckeyes. Shortstop Jedidiah Stephen was 10-for-17 with four RBI and seven runs scored. Four of his 10 hits were doubles and he was able to match his career-best hit streak in a 1-for-5 day against Bethune-Cookman, his 11th straight game with at least one hit. That stretch dates back to the season-ending loss to St. John's at the NCAA Corvallis Regional. Four other players batted better than .400, including Wes Schirtzinger (.571), Ronnie Bourquin (.474), Jacob Howell (.474) and Jason Zoeller (.417).
With the weekend full of hits, the Buckeyes raised their team batting average from .289 through the first six games of the season to .362. Bourquin and Stephen each are 21-for-44 (.477) to pace the squad, while Angle is batting .452, Schirtzinger .389 and Howell .370. Bourquin has five doubles, a triple, 12 RBI and has scored 11 runs. Stephen has eight doubles, nine RBI and eight runs scored. Angle, who has stole 7-of-8 bases, is the team leader with 16 runs scored, while Eric Fryer, the team leader with two home runs, also leads with 15 RBI.
Four different pitchers have wins, led by J.B. Shuck and Cory Luebke. Shuck is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 14.0 innings, while Luebke is 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 17.0 innings. Dan DeLucia is 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 22.2 innings. Dan Barker is 1-0 with a 5.14 ERA and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings after getting the win in game two against Lehigh March 10. Luebke got the win in game one after allowing eight runs (three earned) on 11 hits. DeLucia beat Northern Iowa narrowly missing his first complete game of the year. He allowed six runs on nine hits in 8.2 innings. Shuck earned his second victory of the season vs. Bethune-Cookman, coming off the bench to allow only two hits in 3.2 innings of relief.

    ABOUT VERMONT
The Catamounts took an 0-6 record with them to Bradenton for their spring break. Vermont opened the season March 4-5 with a three game sweep by Delaware and then lost to Minnesota, Illinois State and Ball State at the Metrodome Tournament in Minneapolis last weekend. UVM will play six games -- Indiana, Eastern Illinois, Fairleigh Dickinson, Cornell, South Florida and Illinois -- before meeting Ohio State Thursday and Friday.

    Ohio State vs. Vermont Series Date W/L Score Site 3/20/1995 W 16-3 1N 3/23/2000 W 6-4 2N 3/17/2001 W 7-4 3N 3/18/2001 W 5-1 3N 3/22/2003 L 7-6 4N1-at Lakeland, Fla.; 2-at Homestead, Fla.; 3-at Bradenton, Fla.; 4-at Sarasota, Fla.
    HIT STREAK
When Jedidiah Stephen got a single in the seventh inning in the 9-1 victory over Bethune-Cookman it extended his hit streak to a career-long 11 games. Actually, it tied his career long. Stephen missed two of the first 13 games in 2005, but had a hit in the first 11 games he played last year. The current streak covers all 10 games this season and the season-ending loss to St. John's in the NCAA Corvallis Regional when he was 1-for-4. The senior co-captain from Caldwell, Ohio (Shenandoah), is one of two Buckeyes to pace the team this year with a .477 batting average. The other is Ronnie Bourquin.
    OTHER STREAKS
Seven other Buckeyes also have notable hit streaks. Ronnie Bourquin has a hit in his last seven games, which is a career-long streak. He is followed by Jacob Howell, who has a hit in his last six games. Matt Angle, who hit .647 in the four games in Clearwater, Jason Zoeller, Eric Fryer, Wes Schirtzinger and J.B. Shuck are all riding five-game hit streaks. Shuck has a hit in the five games this season in which he has been a fielder and has a hit in each of those games. He also has made three pitching appearances.
    SOMETHING ABOUT SUNDAY
There must be something about Sunday and Buckeye center fielder Matt Angle. In a 12-11 loss to Western Michigan March 6 in Jacksonville, the sophomore from Whitehall, Ohio (Whitehall-Yearling), Angle had a hit in his first five at bats before grounding out in the ninth. A week later, facing Bethune-Cookman in Clearwater, Angle again started 5-for-5, but when he batted in the top of the ninth, he grounded into a fielder's choice, finishing both games 5-for-6. When the Buckeyes upset No. 12 Missouri on the first Sunday of the season, Feb. 26, he was 2-for-3 with sac fly and a sac bunt.
    MILESTONES
The game against Florida marked the 1,300th game of Bob Todd's career, which is in its 23rd season in 2006. He coached his 1,100th game at Ohio State, where he has coached since 1988, in the Buckeyes' eighth game of the year, a 13-6 victory over Lehigh in the second game of a doubleheader on March 10. Todd owns a career record of 856-450-2 and is 732-368-2 at Ohio State.
Ohio State has played 3,583 games since it began playing baseball in 1881. The 3,600th game in school history will be played against Central Michigan April 12th at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes are 2,159-1,386-38 all time.
    IN THE BIG TEN
When conference stats and standings were updated on Tuesday, March 14, The Buckeyes stood atop the Big Ten standings with their 6-4 overall record. Iowa was 5-4 and Minnesota (5-5) and Purdue (4-4) giving the conference four teams with at least an even record. Ohio State also was the top batting team with a .362 batting average and was the top pitching team with a 4.20 staff ERA.
Jedidiah Stephen and Ronnie Bourquin sit atop the individual batting stats with their .477 batting average. Matt Angle is fourth with a .452 average and Wes Schirtzinger was 10th with a .389 average. Ohio State players have the top spots in runs scored (Angle, 16), hits (Stephen and Bourquin, 21), on-base percentage (Bourquin, .540), RBI (Eric Fryer, 15), doubles (Stephen, eight), total bases (Stephen, 29), stolen bases (Angle, seven).
On the mound, J.B. Shuck ranks fourth with his 1.29 ERA and Cory Luebke ranks ninth with his 2.12 ERA. Shuck and Luebke are tied for the league lead with two victories, while Rory Meister leads with six games finished.
    HIGH-POWERED OFFENSE
Much was made about the Buckeyes' 48 runs on 73 hits last weekend in Clearwater, but in the game preceding that trip, the Buckeyes scored 11 runs on 20 hits against Western Michigan. That ups the numbers to 59 runs on 93 hits in the last five games, or an average of 11.8 runs and 18.6 hits per game. For the season, Ohio State is averaging 8.3 runs on 13.8 hits per game and is holding opponents to 5.9 runs on 9.7 hits per game.
    OTHER BUCKEYE BANTER

Matt Angle drove in a season-high five runs in the first game against Lehigh on March 10 in Clearwater.
Angle had five hits against both Western Michigan (March 5) and Bethune-Cookman (March 12).
Wes Schirtzinger scored five runs in the game-one victory over Lehigh on March 10. He also had four hits in the game.
Ronnie Bourquin had four hits at Florida, when the Gators were ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Jedidiah Stephen was a perfect 4-for-4 in the win over Northern Iowa.
Ohio State committed a season-high six errors in the 17-10 victory over Lehigh in the first game of a doubleheader. The Buckeyes have committed multiple errors in four games this season and rank eighth in the Big Ten in fielding with a .946 fielding percentage.
When Jason Zoeller started at second base against Bethune-Cookman, it was the 100th game of his career. He has started 83 games. Stephen is the team leader with 158 games and other players to have played at least 100 games include Cody Caughenbaugh (123), Schirtzinger (118), Jacob Howell (109) and Bourquin (105).
Stephen had four RBI in four games in Clearwater and now his 104 RBI in his fourth year at Ohio State.
Dan DeLucia won his first game this season against Northern Iowa. The victory was his 10th at Ohio State (10-9). He has 92 strikeouts and has pitched in 163.1 innings with a 4.19 career ERA.
Howell's triple against in the second game against Lehigh was the seventh of his career. He now is tied for 15th all-time. Steve Caravati and Drew Anderson are the all-time leaders with 13.
Trey Fausnaugh's appearance in the first game against Lehigh was the 58th of his career, which ranks 16th all-time. The all-time leader is Cory Cox, who made 96 appearances from 1998-2001.

    TWO BUCKEYES TABBED TO TEAM

Junior third baseman Ronnie Bourquin and junior outfielder Jacob Howell were named to the all-tournament team of the Pepsi Baseball Classic following Wake Forest's win over Florida in the final game Sunday. Bourquin batted .545 in the three games, leading Ohio State with six hits. He was 4-for-5 in the loss at Florida. Howell had five hits and knocked in two runs.

    COLLEGE BASEBALL FOUNDATION HONORS SHUCK

Ohio State freshman left-handed pitcher J.B. Shuck was named to the College Baseball Foundation Honor Roll Feb. 28 after leading the Buckeyes to a 4-2 upset victory over then-No. 12 Missouri. Making his first career start, Shuck allowed only one run on three hits with seven strikeouts, as the Buckeyes pounded out 11 hits to win their first win of the season at the Pepsi Baseball Classic at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. Shuck, a freshman from Galion, Ohio, made his Buckeye debut Friday against Wake Forest with a pinch hit in the eighth inning and then made his first start as a Buckeye Saturday vs. Florida as the starting first baseman. In his seven-inning outing against Missouri, he allowed one run on three hits, struck out six batters, and allowed one walk in his first pitching start as a Buckeye. The honor marks the first time an Ohio State player has appeared on the second-year list.

    IN SEASON OPENERS

With the loss to Wake Forest in the season opener, Bob Todd's Buckeyes are 10-9 in season openers. Now in the 123rd year of Ohio State baseball, the Buckeyes are 75-46-2 (.618) in season openers.

    UP NEXT FOR THE BUCKEYES

Ohio State returns to Columbus Friday, following its 1 p.m. game vs. Vermont. The team will have the weekend off in preparation for the home opener Wednesday, March 29 vs. Toledo at 2 p.m. The Buckeyes then begin Big Ten play on the road at Iowa March 31-April 2.

lets hear it crazybuck....you did a nice job predicting last weekends results!

I agree with clevebucks.... 5 of 6 is a good bet. UIC appears to be the best team we will face, but ya never know...

I just wish we could get gametracker going again..it stinks never knowing whats going on.

I will stick with the optimism again and say 6-0, but I think that is alot of games for our pitchers, and we might just lose one due to tired arms and poor defense.

If our bats are going I think we will be ok. Can't wait for some home games, but it needs to warm up first.

I think we are the top dog out of the 4 teams, and have played the best competition so far.

DeLucia Pitches Three-Hitter in Complete Game 14-0 Shutout of UMass

Buckeye offense bolsters effort with 18 hits to improve record to 7-4

    March 19, 2006

BRADENTON, Fla. - Ohio State pitcher Dan DeLucia allowed only three hits in a nine-inning complete-game shutout and the Buckeyes pounded out 18 hits in a 14-0 victory over Massachusetts Sunday at IMG Academy.

DeLucia did not allow the first hit until the fifth inning and gave up one run in each the eighth and ninth innings. He struck out four and walked two in getting his first complete game since beating Virginia in last year's NCAA tournament. The junior from Columbus, Ohio (Bishop Watterson), hit a batter in the top of the first and walked the first two batters of the second. Both times he got out of trouble. Even after he allowed his first hit, a single through the left side by Joe Catone to lead off the fifth, he picked him off and got a pair of fly outs to get out of the inning. DeLucia threw 106 pitchers and got batters out in order in the third, fourth and sixth innings as he picked up his second win of the season (2-1).

The Buckeyes continued their recent success at the plate with their sixth consecutive game with 16 or more hits. Ohio State, which has a five-game win streak, has scored 73 runs on 111 hits in the last six games.

Sunday against the Minutemen, the hit parade started early.

The game started with four straight hits with an RBI double from Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) and an RBI single from Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South). Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) was hit by a pitch to load the bases for J.B. Shuck (Fr., Galion, Ohio/Galion), who drove in two more runs with a single to center field. Following a walk to Wes Schirtzinger (Jr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North), Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) drove in the fifth run with a single down the left-field line. Shuck was thrown out at the plate trying for another run.

Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland), who singled up the middle to start the Buckeye first, came to the plate again. This time, he drove a ball to the gap in right-center field to score two more runs, capping the seven-run inning with his eighth career triple. He is tied for 10th in school history.

Shuck plated two more runs in the second inning with a single up the middle. Bourquin boarded on a one-out single and went to third on a two-out throwing error by the UMass catcher on a bouncer by Stephen. Both scored on Shuck's single to give Ohio State a 9-0 lead.

Three straight walks with one out loaded the bases for Bourquin and he delivered two with a single to right-centerfield to put the Buckeyes up 11-0.

The final three runs scored in the sixth. Pinch hitter Michael Arp (Fr., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) led off the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. He stayed put on a single to shallow center field by Zoeller. Another wild pitched moved both runners into scoring position before Jonathan Zizzo (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Sarasota [Fla.]) drew a walk to load the bases. After a second fly out of the inning, Bourquin drove in Arp and Zoeller with a single to left for his fourth and fifth RBI of the game.

Bourquin, the hottest of the Buckeyes at the plate, finished 5-for-6, flying out to left after five straight singles to start the game. Howell was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Shuck was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Bourquin ran his hit streak to a team-leading eight games and is batting .520 in the team's 11 games this season.

Stephen's 11-game hit streak dating back to the season-ending loss to St. John's in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, came to an end against UMass. He was hit by a pitch in the first inning and reached on a throwing error in the second before lining out to left. He was replaced in the fifth by Tony Kennedy (So., Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South), who was 1-for-2 with a double in the seventh.

Rory McDonald, the starting pitcher for the Minutemen, got the loss. He allowed nine runs (seven earned) on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Buckeyes, which began their spring break trip Sunday vs. UMass, improved to 7-4 this season and will play five games over the next five days on their spring break trip to Bradenton, Fla. Next up for Ohio State is Cornell Monday at 2:30 p.m. at IMG Academy.

    Ronnie's OBP is a cool .571 !!

I'm really high on JB Shuck..he seems to be a legit 2 way player. He may end up being our #3 starter and First Baseman.

JCOSU, like you said....it looks like we will have gametracker again by the Iowa series for sure, and maybe for the Toledo game.

EDIT: early game in Bradenton... Illinois 4, UMass 3

    tOSU 12, Cornell 4

Jake Hale pitched 7 solid innings
but Rory Meister had another forgetable outing

I think this team is headed in the right direction...Hale and Shuck have made thier cases
for a spot in the weekend rotation..imo

We need a few cupcakes to work the kinks out. Really interested to see who they throw in there to start on the mound.

Amazing stat, 109 runs on 172 hits this season, and only 3 homers. It's great to see so many manufactured runs. That was the biggest weakness of last year's team, by far.

    He also finished with three
    RBI and scored four runs.

    Box Score

    BRADENTON, Fla. -
Ohio State won its sixth straight game using 16 hits, while three pitchers limited Cornell to only four hits in a 12-4 victory over the Big Red Monday at IMG Academy.
Jacob Howell (Jr., Ashland, Ohio/Ashland) was a perfect 5-for-5, drove in three runs and scored another four, while three pitchers allowed only four hits. OSU starter Jake Hale (Fr., Albany, Ohio/Alexander) picked up his first win at Ohio State (1-1) and allowed only two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Josh Barrera (Fr., Somerset, Ohio/Sheridan) and Rory Meister (So., Mansfield, Ohio/Mansfield Madison) each pitched an inning. Barrera and Meister each allowed a run.
The Buckeyes have at least 16 hits in each of the last seven games and have allowed only seven runs in the last two games. Yesterday, Dan DeLucia (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) pitched a three-hit, nine-inning complete game 14-0 shutout of Massachusetts.
Ohio State scored the two lead-off runners in the top of the first inning. Howell led off the game with a single up the middle and after Howell moved to second on a wild pitch, Matt Angle (So., Whitehall, Ohio/Whitehall-Yearling) followed with a single through the left side. Eric Fryer (So., Reynoldsburg, Ohio/Reynoldsburg) drove in both runners with a double down the left-field line.
Another run crossed the plate in the second inning to make the score 3-0 when Howell singled up the middle again to score Justin Miller (Fr., Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) who led off the inning with a base hit.

Cornell scored its first run in bottom of the third inning to pull within two runs, 3-1. Scott Hardinger got the first against Hale with one out in the third. He went to second when William Pauly walked. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch and Hardinger was able to score before the Buckeyes turned a 6-3-5 double play.
Howell led off the fourth with a single to left and scored on a single to left-center field by Angle. Angle was able to move to second on the throw and to third when the throw sailed over the catcher's head. Fryer scored Angle with an infield single to put the Buckeyes up 5-1.
Four runs scored in the fifth to extend the lead to eight, 9-1. Jedidiah Stephen (Sr., Caldwell, Ohio/Shenandoah) led off the inning with his first hit of the game, a single through the left side. He stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a double by Miller, his fourth straight hit. After Jason Zoeller (Jr., Verona, Pa./Shady Side Academy) walked to put runners at first and second, Howell drove in Miller with a single to right center. Fryer drove in both Zoeller and Howell with a base hit to center.
Hale retired the next six batters in order before Hardinger sent a solo shot over the left-field fence for the second Cornell hit and run of the game. That made the score 9-2.
The Buckeyes added three runs on a pair of hits and two Big Red errors to build a 12-2 lead. Howell came through with his fifth hit of the game to drive in Zoeller, who reached on a throwing error and then both Howell and Angle scored on a fielding error when the ball off the bat of Ronnie Bourquin (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Canton South) went between the legs of the Cornell first baseman.
Hale gave up his third hit of the game to start the seventh, but got a double play and another ground out to get out of the inning. Barrera came on in the eighth. He walked his first batter and a wild pitch before giving up a single up the middle scored the third Big Red run of the game. Meister allowed one run in the ninth.
Fryer also was 4-for-4 against Cornell. He had a double and three singles to drive in five runs. Miller was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs scored.
Ohio State will play a split doubleheader on Tuesday, meeting Illinois-Chicago at 10 a.m. followed with another game vs. Cornell at 2:30 p.m. The six-game spring break trip concludes with a pair of games vs. Vermont Thursday and Friday.
