BP's own Buckeye Football Games Database

We have just added a new feature to good ol' Buckeye Planet. There is now an item on one of the top toolbars that says 'Football Games DB'. Clicking on that will take you to the new 'Stats' page of BP, where inquiries into the Buckeye Football DB can be submitted.

Once there, it should be mostly intuitive how to request the information. At this point, only tOSU games are included, so the first selection only has the 'Ohio State' option. The next two drop-down buttons allow which football seasons are to be included, all the way back to tOSU's first contest in May of 1890. That is part of the 1890 season, however, since I defined seasons to begin and end in late February.

If dates are the only option specified, all tOSU games for those time periods will be returned (one per line in the table). A second table will always display the W-L totals and the winning percentage for all games that meet the inquiry parameters. The second table includes subtotals to break out home/away/neutral subtotals for both conference and non-conference games. Conference Championship Games (hey, we're looking ahead!) and Bowl Games also have their own subtotals. Any games that are determined to be vacated of forfeited after they are played will be reflected in the right-side columns of the second table.

Making selections in the other fields will filter the games by whatever combinations of criteria are entered. The 'Vs Opponent' option will limit the returned data to only games against that individual opponent. And selecting an individual month will omit all games except those played in the specified month.

The 'State - Only/Except' area allows one to include only games played in an individual state - or to get all games outside that state by using the 'except' option. (Yes, that made determining some of last week's trivia answers rather simple). :wink2:

The 'Conference' and 'FCS/FBS' buttons are also connected to one another. Selecting a conference from the list will return only games played against members of that conference when the game was played. Selecting a conference and clicking the 'Conf-Cur' option under the 'FCB/FBS' heading will instead select games based on current members of the conference selected. (Recent conference changes have been reflected, so Nebraska is in the B1G, Utah/Colorado in the Pac-12, etc.)

Leaving the 'Conference' option as 'all' and selecting a Division Level under 'FBS/FCS' will restrict the information to games against members of that Division when the games were played. Note that for games prior to 1937, it's hard to say which division teams were in.

The 'Day/Night' option can be used to select only games played prior to a local kickoff of 5 p.m., or those with a kickoff after 5 p.m.

The Rankings button allows 28 different ways of limiting games based on whether Ohio State was ranked by the AP or BCS when the games were played, whether they were #1 at the time, or unranked ('NR'). Those parameters are also specified for the opponent (tOSU's ranking will be the first one of any pair that's specified). The BCS Rankings have only been around since 1998, and until sometime in October they don't exist each year. As an example, requesting all games that tOSU played in 2006 as BCS #1 will only return the last 6 games of the year, since the first few games of the year were before any BCS ranking came out.

If there are any suspected errors in the data, please send me a PM. I conceived and created the database, so if there are any mistakes they are mine alone.

General questions may be asked in this thread. Data for other teams may be included in the future, the programming is basically done, it's just a matter of entering another team's data into the table and adding them as an option in the first button.

Thanks to Clarity for creating Buckeye Planet and for allowing BP to be used to display these pages of data.

Thanks to Deety for assisting in the migration of the DB onto a BP server, and for finding a smooth way to hook these new pages into the BP framework, allowing all of this to be displayed with the BP look'.

For those who are interested, the data exists in a MySQL database, and is accessed using php modules on an Apache server. It was developed in a 'LAMP' environment, and the developer is currently available for those looking to hire his services.

So, for those of you wondering what tOSU's record is for October non-conference games, or their record for night games played outside the state of Ohio, or as AP #1 against current members of the B1G, or numerous other questions, here you are.

Enjoy, and Go Bucks!

The database has been updated to reflect the vacating of 12 wins in 2010.

The totals table has two sets of numbers, with actual results on the left side, and the numbers after applying the vacated wins on the right side. This table will either appear at the top or the bottom of the display, depending on your browser.

The conference realignment moves for the 2012 season have been applied, so selecting a conference and 'Conf-cur' will return results based on tOSU's records against all teams in that conference as of 2012. For example, using 'SEC___Conf-cur' returns this, indicating that the addition of Mizzou and aTm gives tOSU an all-time record of 22-13-3 against SEC teams, and a 3-10 record in bowls.

The database is one of the most incredible things a BPer has put together, ever. I look forward to seeing it back up, and maybe we can get it a little extra attention with a forum announcement so people know it's there.
