BP Video Production Discussion

rocketman

flying low
First off, I don't want to be stepping on anyones toes here in starting this discussion. If whatever I say is a bunch of really dumb ideas, then I'll shut up and never bring up this topic again.

Secondly, mad props go out to Clarity for doing this whole thing, and for Mili starting up the movie clips section on the forums which has taken on a life of its own in the past year.

I was wondering, though, where this whole thing will go in the future. I don't know what Clarity has planned, but since no one has really talked about it, I'd figure I'd chime in and see what the mods, various members of the BP video production crew (me, timbuck2, sandgk, hilmerj, etc.) and more importantly what Clarity thinks.

When the bittorrent trend started last July I would have never known just how much it would have exploded just 6 months later. It went from me posting up 3 games from the 2004 season, to having every game of the 2005 season in atleast two formats, and numerous classic games going from the 2002 NC season, and dating back to the early 90's. On top of that, a few members have uncovered stockpiles of VHS tapes of OSU games going back to 1980 - begging to be ripped to DVD and put up here on bittorrent.

The way I see it is, to make things more successful with all the ridiculous amounts of media that we will have, I think maybe for next season some reorganization could be useful.

If it's possible, one thing that could get the job done is if there was some place separate to post the video files from the forum, like how the galleries are set up. This way we could organize the games by year, author, file type etc. New video releases wouldn't get lost in a sea of requests and you could also have thumbnails for each video.

Anyway, I just wanted to know what the mods and Clarity had in mind about this; if it's possible or not, etc.

Not a bad idea. I think a new section would be a good idea for organizational purposes. Somehow, we would need to keep Mili's section along with adding various other sections all within one base forum.

I'm not sure how much programming this would take, and if it's a laborious task then I think the best thing would be for all you video gurus to make a base thread for your videos all linked to your first post of the thread and we could move them to one location and even "Sticky" them up top for easier reference.

You are like the opposite of that Yoda to Skywalker line --

"Always with you it CAN be done :wink2:"

It just depends upon the way.

I would love to implement some form of hack or software to handle that type of request. It would make it easier to organize the major designs from the graphic forum as well. This was actually discussed for the gfx forum previously, and was put on the backburner until some of the other BP needs were taken care of.

I wouldn't say opposite, but alas I am a realist. :wink2:

The last thing Clar needs to worry about right now is programming.

I would be glad to stick some video threads for these guys but Basketball and Open Discussion don't fit, unless we put them in the home video thread.

I'd think Mili's video clips section would definately stay cause that'd be a place to easily post up clips and other stuff.

For full games I'd think like a video gallery would be sweet (again, like gd01 said, I dunno how much programming is involved and the last thing Clarity probably wants to do is more programming). A lot more time is taken to produce a finished product like a full game divx or dvd and having a more permanent and visible place to put them up would help.

There was an example of a ND fan site that had the games organized in a "gallery" of sorts and it looked slick. They went all out as well, displaying the number of seeders and leechers under the thumbnail of each the game. Granted, this guy probably had his own tracker, but I heard you could pull this information off our tracker's RSS feed (thepiratebay.com's in our case).

As far as my plans are for next season...well, lets just say I'm workin on a way right now to get every game recorded in hi-def  . HD games probably compressed with the H.264 codec or something similar. Basically it lets you view files in HD quality on your computer without the ridiculously huge size. I think an hour is 1 GB, so a full game would be 2-3 GB, as compared to 1.7 or so for regular-def divx files that I've been making.
