How much bandwidth does BuckeyePlanet go through each month?

Just curious. :oh:

In the off-season, at the low end of 2-3mbps. During the season, we are at the high end of that, with spikes up to 4 or just above. I don't know offhand what our monthly data transfer is (I only track bitrate since that determines what we pay), but now I'm sort of curious.

Thanks. Do you know how many gigabytes that would be?

Not trying to come off like a jerk, but this just got to me. Uh, how about trying some basic math?

60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours = 86,400 seconds in a day.

30 days (avg. month) x 86,400 = 2,592,000 seconds in a day.

Avg bit rate of 2mbps (2 million bits per second) = 250,000 bytes per second.

2,592,000 seconds x 250,000 bytes per second = 648,000,000,000 bytes (648 gigabytes) per month.

Took me all of about 30 seconds to figure this out (about four times longer to type it).

Again, not trying to an ass-clown, but this stuff just gets to me. Last week I went to Maui Tacos and got a meal that came out to $6.81, and I gave this chick a $10-bill. She hit the wrong button on the register so that while the total came up, it wouldn't finalize the transaction (and thus figure the change for her). The manager came over with the drawer key to force the change drawer open and told her just give me the change and went back to what he was doing. Well, guess what...this frickin' mental giant couldn't subtract $6.81 from $10.00. I could only take about 10 seconds of her totally stupefied look before I said as nicely as I could, "19 cents to make $7 and then $3 to make $10". She let out a sigh of relief, thought for a second, and said, "So, $3.19, right?". It was all I could do to keep the little smile on my face and not reach over the counter and Shi'ite-smack her...

I guess it's a bad idea to ask questions around here. Sorry about that. You know it may be simple math to you but I am pretty sure that a large majority of people couldn't do that.

Again, sorry for asking a question big guy!

BTW... Clarity great forum, I've been reading over here for the past few years just don't post very much.

Your userID is 568, that puts you here since 2004. :)

Appreciate the feedback, and no worries at all on the question. The figures are all ballparks. The mbps a 95% threshold, I believe, the GB/mo a load average specific to www.buckeyeplanet, so it's probably a bit higher than I reported from various other subdomains.

Gives a picture of the traffic though. 5/2006-5/2007 definitely represented our biggest jump in annual bandwidth usage to date.

actually you're the one coming across as an ass, as your answer is completely different than Clarity's, and I assume (as most would), that he knows what he's talking about a hell of a lot more than you. :roll1:

You think a large majority of people know how to add 2 mbps into a lengthy calculation?

Uh, it's not a "lengthy calculation", it's simple deduction. If you know the per-second speed rating and want to know the speed rating for the month, all you have to do is figure out how many seconds there in a month and then multiply (oh wait, I had to throw in that really hard part where you had to convert 8 bits to 1 byte :roll1:).

This is the kind of crap they used to teach back in frickin' 4th and 5th grade...you know, like if Farmer Joe gets $3 per bushel of corn, how many bushels would he have to sell, on average, per day every day over the next two weeks to make $8400? Today's basic, common, every-day math skills suck.

Many users can't figure out how to post a picture on the new scout boards, which merely requires a simple <img src> html tag, or a copy & paste. If they can't figure that out, I'd imagine they'd be unable to figure out, or at least intimidated by, the value of 2 mbps.

I'm not denying that...
