Well, I suppose I am the primary cause of Ohio State's big drop. I obviously had tOSU far too high at 6 last week. I thought going into the year that with Nebraska's offensive woes the second half or so of last season and Martinez's inability to throw the ball with any kind of consistency, and with Wisconsin's losses along the offensive line, that Ohio State, despite all the turmoil, would be the team to beat in the Big Ten. What I saw on Saturday was a team that got beat for most of the game in the trenches (both offensive and defensive), shaky quarterback play, questionable coaching decisions, a field goal kicker that simply cannot be relied on, and, in general, a lack of playmakers. Couple all this with the uncertainty surrounding the program right now, and maybe I'm being too critical, but the team that I saw on Saturday could very easily lose 4 games this season, which puts them right around the #20 mark in the polls. Toledo is a solid club, but we'll play better teams as the year goes on, including in the weeks to come before we get Adams, Posey, and Herron back.
To address LJB's question about VaTech, they also struggled and I therefore dropped them a spot, but they were playing on the road against a pretty decent East Carolina team that, for a half the week before, put a scare in the team I expect to win the SEC East. Not to mention the fact that, despite the score, VaTech's defense held East Carolina to -15 yards on the ground and just 112 yards of total offense. That's a better performance than what I saw out of the Buckeyes at home on Saturday. Really though, my poll will be quite fluid for the first 5 weeks or so and, right now, I don't see a big difference between, say, teams 15-23 in my poll.
To me, the most shocking thing about the week 2 poll was seeing someone still giving votes to Iowa. Huh? Did someone miss them getting beaten by Iowa freaking State?
