SmoovP's Top Twenty Five

I have a difficult time putting a unbeaten team ahead of a team with a loss, but even so, I do it - and then I hate myself for it.

And while these are 'as of today' picks, and not where I think they'll end up at the end of the year, there is a little bit of a 'look ahead' involved and I certainly take into consideration Strength of Schedule thus far.

Anyhow...

1. Alabama 5-0 Dominating in all phases of the game. No exploitable weakness on this team.
2. LSU 5-0 Losing Jordan Jefferson might have been a blessing in disguise. Offense still a bit suspect.
3. Clemson 5-0 Biggest surprise of the season so far. Have beaten three good teams.
4. Wisconsin 5-0 Just road grading opponents. Russell Wilson gives them another dimension on Offense.
5. Oklahoma 4-0 Not as dominant on Offense as expected and can be scored on.
6. Stanford 4-0 Talent, smarts and experience up and down the roster. Haven't really beaten anyone good.
7. Oklahoma State 4-0 I doubt they stay here, but for now they get the benefit of the doubt. Suspect defense.

From this point down, I start looking for the team with the most impressive win, coupled with the best loss. And I start projecting 'would X team beat Y team?". I try to keep head to head winners on top, but it's tough to keep track of.

It gets real subjective from here and is mostly a 'pick 'em'.

8. Boise State 4-0 1 good win vs. Georgia. Haven't beaten anyone else decent. Won't stay this high.
9. Illinois 5-0 Squeaky win over decent Arizona State. Winning ugly over bad teams. Tough sledding ahead.
10. Kansas State 4-0 Squeaky wins over a good Baylor team and decent Miami. Tough sledding ahead.
11. Auburn 4-1 Squeaky wins over South Carolina and Mississippi State. Good loss to Clemson. Tough sledding ahead.
12. Arkansas 4-1 Soundly beaten by Alabama. Squeaky comeback win over Texas A&M. Hard to know what to make of this team.
13. Arizona State 4-1 Squeaky win over Missouri. Good win over decent USC. Good loss over Illinois. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
14. Texas 4-0 No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Tough sledding ahead.
15. Baylor 3-1 Squeaky win over decent TCU. Good loss over Kansas State. Tough sledding ahead.
16. Michigan 5-0 A squeaky win vs. Notre Dame is not impressive. No impressive wins. Tough sledding ahead, but could surprise.
17. Georgia Tech 5-0 No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
18. Oregon 3-1 Soundly beaten by LSU. No good wins. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
19. Nebraska 4-1 No impressive wins over anyone decent. Soundly beaten by Wisconsin. Manageable schedule ahead.
20. West Virginia 4-1 Soundly beaten by LSU. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Easy schedule the rest of the way.
21. Florida 4-1 Soundly beaten by Alabama. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Very tough schedule ahead.
22. South Carolina 4-1 Three squeaky wins over East Carolina, Georgia and Navy isn't really impressive. Tough schedule ahead.
23. Virginia Tech 4-1 Soundly beaten by Clemson. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Easy schedule the rest of the way.
24. Michigan State 4-1 Ugly loss to Notre Dame. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Tough schedule ahead.
25. Florida State 2-2 Two losses to good teams in Oklahoma and Clemson. No good wins. Easy schedule the rest of the way.

Starting this week, I first ranked all of the undefeated teams. Then I ranked all of the one loss teams. I also did a top 5 of two loss teams. I then merged those rankings together to get a top 25. I was close to including both Florida State and Texas A&M, my 1 and 2 of the two loss teams, but I just couldn't justify placing a 2 loss team above an undefeated team at this point in the season.

Still have Houston ranked, I think they can run it, and I think Texas Tech deserves it this week over a woefully underachieving A&M team and Baylor.

I know some are expressing reluctance to include FSU and aTm, and I can understand that, given the two losses. But this is the point in the year that I'm going to start looking a lot more at what I've seen on the field and slightly minimize the value of win-loss records. I'm hard pressed, after watching large swaths of the four games that FSU and aTm lost, to believe that they aren't among the 25 best teams in the country despite the losses. Neither Houston nor Texas Tech has a win I'm particularly impressed by, but they are both flirting with my top-25 and I'll have to include them soon if they keep winning.

1. LSU - No Brainer
2. Wisconsin - Maybe a little B1G bias
3. Alabama - They look good but I still think they blow it somewhere
4. Oklahoma - We will see this weekend
5. Stanford - Temporarily holding on to the 2012 Cincinnati Bengals' QB
6. Boise State - Someone from ESPiN must have put them this high
7. Oklahoma State - Like someone stated above, they won't be this high long
8. Oregon - I think I was looking at past years when I ranked them this high
9. Georgia Tech - Their version of the option hurts my head
10. Flo-Rida - They will fall as well
11. TSUN - I know, they haven't beat anyone yet. Time will tell
12. Illinois - Possibly end out of Top 25
13. Texas - Definitely won't be here long
14. Arkansas - I don't see this version Woo Pig Suey going any higher
15. Florida State - Good team but not quite there yet
16. Virginia Tech - Sigh!
17. Nebraska - Maybe too high
18. WVU - Looked good at times against LSU and then their defense would step on the field
19. South Carolina - Typical Spurrier team
20. Kansas State - Fuck them! They can go undefeated and I will keep them at #20. They will fall...they always do
21. Arizona State - Decent team in a shit conference
22. Baylor - A bit high now that I look at it but their QB looks good right now
23. Michigan State - I wanted to put them at #1 after they squeaked out a win against "arguably" the best team in Ohio
24. Houston - They should run the table and become ESPiN's new darling
25. Washington - I haven't seen them play yet so the jury is still out
