SmoovP's Top Twenty Five
I have a difficult time putting a unbeaten team ahead of a team with a loss, but even so, I do it - and then I hate myself for it.
And while these are 'as of today' picks, and not where I think they'll end up at the end of the year, there is a little bit of a 'look ahead' involved and I certainly take into consideration Strength of Schedule thus far.
Anyhow...
1. Alabama 5-0 Dominating in all phases of the game. No exploitable weakness on this team.
2. LSU 5-0 Losing Jordan Jefferson might have been a blessing in disguise. Offense still a bit suspect.
3. Clemson 5-0 Biggest surprise of the season so far. Have beaten three good teams.
4. Wisconsin 5-0 Just road grading opponents. Russell Wilson gives them another dimension on Offense.
5. Oklahoma 4-0 Not as dominant on Offense as expected and can be scored on.
6. Stanford 4-0 Talent, smarts and experience up and down the roster. Haven't really beaten anyone good.
7. Oklahoma State 4-0 I doubt they stay here, but for now they get the benefit of the doubt. Suspect defense.
From this point down, I start looking for the team with the most impressive win, coupled with the best loss. And I start projecting 'would X team beat Y team?". I try to keep head to head winners on top, but it's tough to keep track of.
It gets real subjective from here and is mostly a 'pick 'em'.
8. Boise State 4-0 1 good win vs. Georgia. Haven't beaten anyone else decent. Won't stay this high.
9. Illinois 5-0 Squeaky win over decent Arizona State. Winning ugly over bad teams. Tough sledding ahead.
10. Kansas State 4-0 Squeaky wins over a good Baylor team and decent Miami. Tough sledding ahead.
11. Auburn 4-1 Squeaky wins over South Carolina and Mississippi State. Good loss to Clemson. Tough sledding ahead.
12. Arkansas 4-1 Soundly beaten by Alabama. Squeaky comeback win over Texas A&M. Hard to know what to make of this team.
13. Arizona State 4-1 Squeaky win over Missouri. Good win over decent USC. Good loss over Illinois. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
14. Texas 4-0 No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Tough sledding ahead.
15. Baylor 3-1 Squeaky win over decent TCU. Good loss over Kansas State. Tough sledding ahead.
16. Michigan 5-0 A squeaky win vs. Notre Dame is not impressive. No impressive wins. Tough sledding ahead, but could surprise.
17. Georgia Tech 5-0 No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
18. Oregon 3-1 Soundly beaten by LSU. No good wins. Fairly easy schedule the rest of the way.
19. Nebraska 4-1 No impressive wins over anyone decent. Soundly beaten by Wisconsin. Manageable schedule ahead.
20. West Virginia 4-1 Soundly beaten by LSU. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Easy schedule the rest of the way.
21. Florida 4-1 Soundly beaten by Alabama. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Very tough schedule ahead.
22. South Carolina 4-1 Three squeaky wins over East Carolina, Georgia and Navy isn't really impressive. Tough schedule ahead.
23. Virginia Tech 4-1 Soundly beaten by Clemson. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Easy schedule the rest of the way.
24. Michigan State 4-1 Ugly loss to Notre Dame. No impressive wins vs. anyone better than decent. Tough schedule ahead.
25. Florida State 2-2 Two losses to good teams in Oklahoma and Clemson. No good wins. Easy schedule the rest of the way.
