Some observations about a third on the way through the season:

1. If Ohio State keeps playing "Big Ten football", they will get passed in the polls by some "speed" team like Oregon. Beauty points count....

2. After annihilating Florida, it looks like the Iron Bowl could be the biggest challenge left for Alabama.

3. Urban Meyer's genius status has been officially revoked. In their last two contests against Alabama, Florida has been outscored 63-19. I wonder when the national media will start squawking about the Gators' choke jobs on the national stage and their obvious lack of speed....

4. Penn State might be the worst team in the Big Ten this season. The Lions' defense is average, and their offense is downright horrible. October 23rd at Minnesota could determine who inhabits the Big Ten basement in 2010.

5. Michigan State really did Ohio State a disservice by beating Wisconsin, and they should repeat the "favor" this weekend against Michigan. The Buckeyes do not play the Spartans this season, and any conference wins by Michigan State will hurt Ohio State's already weak strength of schedule.

6. I would not be surprised to see six teams go undefeated in 2010: Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Boise State, TCU (or Utah), and the Big XII champ (Oklahoma or Nebraska). With four undefeated teams left out of the title game, that would be the final nail in the coffin of the BCS (and good riddance).

7. Is Les Miles the worst coach in college football? How did that guy beat Jim Tressel?

Ouch  I still think that a Purdue team without their starting QB, RB, and best WR (and who lost to a MAC team) will probably be in the cellar if Brewster doesn't find a way to coach his way there, but we'll see. The Illinois/PSU game this week will determine a lot as far as they are concerned.

Rank Team Conference
1 Alabama SEC
2 Ohio State Big Ten
3 Nebraska Big-12
4 Oregon Pac-10
5 Oklahoma Big-12
6 Boise State WAC
7 Texas Christian MWC
8 Auburn SEC
9 Arizona Pac-10
10 Utah MWC
11 Louisiana State SEC
12 Michigan State Big Ten
13 Miami (FL) ACC
14 Michigan Big Ten
15 Nevada WAC
16 Kansas State Big-12

19 Stanford Pac-10
20 Arkansas SEC
21 Wisconsin Big Ten
22 Oklahoma State Big-12
23 Temple MAC
24 North Carolina State ACC
25 Northwestern Big Ten

This is a difficult top-25 to put together as there is a lack of worthy teams. I dropped Florida from the ballot altogether. They just aren't cutting it for me by being inept offensively 4 out of 5 games.

Not trying to come off harshly, but what are your justifications/reasoning for Oregon at #2? I don't necessarily think anybody else deserves the two spot or not, but is their win against Stanford the biggest thing, or their offensive-juggernaut status? Cuz other than Stanford, I'm not impressed with their schedule... but I suppose we can say that about most teams.

Right now, I'd say we have Alabama as clear cut no.1, and then the revolver of Oklahoma, Ohio State, Nebraska and Oregon as the possible #2's. Out of that, I favor the team with the most impressive combo package of offense/defense which to me indicates Ohio State. Oregon relies too much on turnovers defensively, which will be a difficult thing to come by against the top-notch teams. The Ducks are very sexy this year, I am just wary about them as they've been sexy 3 out of the last 4 seasons and gone on to disappointment and their defense seems the least proven amongst their fellow poll contenders.

To answer the question above for me it's simple...I move teams week-to-week based on performance. To me Oregon looked like a top 2 team in beating a top 10 team in a great ballgame and looking pretty good doing it...we looked lackluster and unimpressive offensively in beating a relatively weak Illinois team. End of story. Could easily change next week, but given that we haven't really played anyone other than Miami either, I think it's Oregon right now. Has nothing to do with "sexy" or point totals in my case.

Appreciate the response and I can't argue too much against it, but I just have one point to make on the week-to-week issue. At what juncture of the season is a team with a good resume allowed to stumble around in a game and not get surpassed by a team that wins a marquee match-up? I try and be mobile with my rankings but also try to let an impressive victory settle around a bit and put things into perspective.

Ohio State wins at home against the current BP Poll #10 Miami team in dominating fashion except for Special Teams. Oregon wins at home against the current #16 team Stanford, but allowed them to get to a 28-3 lead before getting back into it. One marquee win for each, but Oregon also allowed Tennessee and Arizona State to lead at/near half-time with some bad execution on both sides of the ball. Ohio State struggles against Illinois is comparable, but Oregon relied on some timely turnovers to turn their two respective games around (something I'd argue is more anomalous than inherently great defense) while Ohio State and their defense did it through a more brute-force manner of stopping drives.

I just felt that #2 teams shouldn't have 3/5 of their games with such a poor initial effort, and when I think that a team like Nebraska and Ohio State would win a game the way Oregon currently allows teams to start (i.e. with a nice lead) I cannot think of the Ducks as #2.

Just trying for some harmless debate

The adjustments made to come back and absolutely dominate the Cardinal in the second half after being smacked around in the first is the best piece of coaching I've seen so far this year.

I've been as critical as anyone of "Oregon just being Oregon" (flashy O, mediocre D, wilting under pressure) but digging out of that hole and destroying a fundamentally sound (and Big Ten like) Stanford team was a major statement.

(Remember I've been consistently ranking Stanford in the Top 10 and highest among Pac schools.)

If the Buckeyes put together a complete game I'll happily move them back into the slot...but until the mistakes get under control & I'm more confident about the 6th string guys in the defensive backfield I just can't do it.

Illinois 33, Penn State 13. At Happy Valley. For Homecoming. Are you a believer yet?
