I will now grab the nearest non-smoker to me and proceed to blow smoke in thier face, as often as possible, maybe even CPR style. So that way, everyone dies from smoke. choke on it. :p

I really cannot believe that someone is advocating the relinquishment of hard fought freedoms - whether it be to an unelected coporation, or to institutions of Government.

I'm praying that you are teaching something like Math or Science, hopefully not Civics and Government

Don't worry, physical education. I guess I kind of quickly responded without a whole lot of thought the first time. My real feelings are much more mixed. For one I'm admittedly pretty egocentric, more so then your average individual I suspect. I also don't smoke, so to me I only see benefits. However, the possibility of future firing over obesity scares me as I suspect my mother is near that 'fitness level'. That puts it into prospective a bit for me and I hate the concept of her being able to be fired for such a thing.

But when smoking I'm quick to be okay with it, because no one in my family smokes; and honestly, I'm at times bitter of the freedoms taken away. Where I'm student teaching at currently, I'd be very badly talked about for simply entering a bar. So I have little sympathy for others when pressed for a quick reaction without much thought on a subject like this. I believe there should be alternatives to this measure but I'm not overly bitter at the company. I think their actions will prompt the government into making a better resolution for everyone.

I read the first page of this thread and then noticed that there are 18 pages, so I decided to respond to the first questionable (in my mind) thought on this subject:

as a non smoker i could really care less honestly. the only impact this has on me is perhaps a better job market.

It may not affect you now, but as explained by others earlier, where does this end? Will they prohibit drinking? Will they prohibit fast food? Will they prohibit recreational sports? Companies have absolutely no damn business controlling your off-duty activities.

If only that were true. Depending on who funds a study, the results seem to lean towards the direction of the funding. For example, we all know that science condemns secondhand smoke. If it were half as deadly as they say, then smokers would be dying in droves after about 3 months. You could give a copy of the report on secondhand smoke to my grandma. She started when she was 10 years old and lived to 85 and died of natural causes. Would you trust a study funded by the smokefree.org nazi's?

Again, you have failed to meet my request, insisting instead on spouting off with fact less statements. I'm glad to hear that your grandmother was fortunate enough to live to 85 and started smoking when she was 10. I would say that makes her the exception, certainly not the rule in this case. While there exists far left or right groups for every cause, most science if well founded and solid. As a result, most of the medical literature related to smoking comes from university and hospital studies with no particular biased. Most funding for these studies comes from federal funding sources, particularly the National Institute of Health. As I've asked, please present some facts in support of your argument so that this discuss may continue.

OMG They're going to take away the TV and red sweaters next!!! where will it stop? after that they're going to take away coasters and flourescent light bulbs!!!! Then it's on to microwaves and dish soap. They're trying to take away our freedom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
