After watching Carlos Pena play for the Tigers for a few years here is what I know. Has the longest homer in Comerica Park history and I believe the most career homers at Comerica with 31 or so. He has alot of power but K's a lot and walks very seldom. By K'ing a lot I mean once every 3 or 4 AB's (at least it seems like it). Also very streaky, I think he went 1 for 35 over a 10 game stretch and the next 10 went something like 19 for 33.

We needed a left-handed bat desperately after Trot and 'Tek went out with injuries. Not to mention the fact that Hinske is a career .331 hitter (41-124) at Fenway.

I sure wish Theo woulda went after some pitching help too.

We're not going to ask him to drive in 100 runs or hit 30 bombs a year. He's a quality left-handed bat off the bench. Also, Nixon's injury is a lot worse than was originally thought.

He's versatile defensively with some pop in his bat. He'll be able to spell Youk and Lowell and platoon with Wily Mo in RF.

I don't think anyone thinks that he'll single-handedly win the pennant for us.

That's a good point. Not like he's going to be under a great deal of pressure. On the other hand, Boston is more a natural pressure-cooker than is Toronto.

Plus, as it has gone this season, there are really only two bats to worry about Ortiz and Manny. Although, Loretta is - in my view - an underrated hitter. Anyway... seems to me, if you can get past Ortiz and Manny (which, even as good as they are, you're going to be able to do nearly 65% of the time on average) you're in good shape. I guess what I'm saying is, they need a guy like Damon, and while they have a roster of players who could (should?) be doing that, this year hasn't been working out that way... or at least not consistently.
