Boston Red Sox (9x World Series Champions)

Jon Lester with the no-no....

Just as impressive (IMO) is that after 130 pitches, he was still throwing 95 MPH fastballs in the 9th....

Unbelievable! The kid had cancer a year and a half ago. What an amazing comeback.

Varitek has caught 4 no hitters in his career. Wow.

This star had big supporting cast

By Nancy Marrapese-Burrell, Globe Staff | May 20, 2008

It was the top of the fourth inning, and Jon Lester was pitching to Kansas City designated hitter Jose Guillen with two outs.

Guillen hit a ball to center field that was dropping fast and appeared destined to be a base hit - but speedy Jacoby Ellsbury raced in and made a diving catch that ended the inning. It was a terrific play, but Ellsbury wouldn't realize just how important it was until Lester struck out Alberto Callaspo to end the ninth and complete his no-hitter last night at Fenway Park.

Just say no
Lester throws no-hitter at Fenway Park

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | May 20, 2008

He put the ball in his cowboy boot. A temporary refuge, to be sure, but a measure of how Jon Lester chose to wear his fame on a magical, windswept Monday night in May.

The Red Sox lefthander threw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals last night at Fenway Park, which in baseball is often cast as an immortal act but for a cancer survivor is something to be taken with a touch of modesty, a pinch of humor, and, in a quiet moment, to be stuck in your shoe.

Varitek gets his mitts on history, too

By Gordon Edes, Globe Staff | May 20, 2008

There would be a slice of history for the catcher, too.

Jason Varitek, who caught Jon Lester's 130 pitches last night, became the first catcher behind the plate for four no-hitters.

Varitek caught Clay Buchholz's no-hitter last Sept. 1 against the Orioles in Fenway Park. He also caught Derek Lowe's no-hitter on April 27, 2002, in Fenway Park against Tampa Bay, and Hideo Nomo's no-hitter on April 4, 2001, in Baltimore against the Orioles.

Anybody else think a no hitter is the most overrated "event" in sports? "History has been made!" "An historic night in Boston!"

yeah, so historic that it happens every year, most years at least 2 or 3 times. :roll1:

according to wikipedia: 256 no-hitters have been thrown in Major League history; only 17 of those were perfect games

I think it falls somewhere in the middle of what you said and what the media is making it out to be.

Lester's no-no is being glorified more because of his battle with lymphoma.

There as been over 175,000 games played in MLB history. Of which, less than 0.15% have been no hitters.
I'd say that's pretty rare and historic.
